Howard Louis Conard, historian and biographer, editor of the 1901 Encyclopedia of Missouri, wrote this 1890 "account of the adventures and thrilling experiences of the most noted American hunter, trapper, guide, scout, and Indian fighter now living" from his interviews in the waning years of the old mountain man's life.
