A stock index is a compilation of many stocks such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the Standard & Poor's 500. These broader indexes can be very profitable to trade. However, individual investors and smaller traders have traditionally been left out of these markets due to the expense of just one contract (which can be as high as $100,000).
