Pathology & diagnosis of PCV2 associated reproductive failure in pigs

Om Pathology & diagnosis of PCV2 associated reproductive failure in pigs

Reproductive failure is one of the major factors that have degraded the swine population. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the primary causative agent of porcine circovirus associated disease (PCVAD). The virus preferentially targets the lymphoid tissues, which leads to lymphoid depletion and immunosuppression in pigs. The present study was carried out to determine the pathology and diagnosis of porcine circovirus-2 associated reproductive failure in pigs of Mizoram. The study showed that PCV2 associated reproductive failure was endemic during the study period from August, 2012 to March, 2013. Based on PCR analysis, serum samples collected across the state revealed that 16.4% (44 out of 268 samples) were positive for the presence of PCV antigens. Likewise 18.7% (6 out of 32 tissue samples collected from aborted, stillborn and weak born piglets) were also positive for PCV2 antigen.
