Self-deception is inherent in everyone, even born-again Christians, those who have much biblical light and knowledge. And whatever degree of holiness they are currently at, they are satisfied with where they are. In this satisfaction, they often flatter themselves, believing that God is as pleased with them as they are of themselves. Many people in the church flatter themselves, believing they have discovered an easier path in the Christian walk, and in the eternal salvation which brings them to heaven, than Paul was aware of. They assume they will achieve victory and receive the crown not by battling and mortifying their own sins, but by deluding themselves into thinking they are something rather than nothing and engaging in cleverly crafted self-talk full of gracious words and empty persuasiveness. This only serves to disguise their own hypocrisy and unfaithfulness to Christ's covenant, leading to the deception and ruin of themselves, and even other people they infect. The Christian church is filled with people like this. Are you one of them? Self-flattery is a sin against the ninth commandment which must be unmasked. In this work, McMahon seeks to uncover this very pervasive sin, showing what self-flattery is, how one comes to flatter themselves in their daily walk, and the motives to shun self-flattery in order to mortify it by the power of the Spirit. People often like to hear from the preacher, just tell me Jesus loves me and leave it at that. This delusion is the cornerstone of a self-flattering person. People always say, "I'm a Christian!" The question revolves around whether they act like it as well; do they have a life answerable to the profession they make when they say it? Or are they hiding behind the mask of smooth words they tell themselves about their spiritual condition?

Nicholas Chewney (1610-1685) was a puritan divine who was a powerful Reformed Gospel preacher and theologian. This treatise was originally penned by Nicholas Chewney in response to a Socinian tract written by Samuel Richardson which denied hell. Chewney takes up the biblical and Reformed position on hell as Jesus Christ taught it in Scripture. The treatise is divided into four sections: he shows that there is such a place as hell, what this place is, and where it is. He concludes with a final section on application. He does not refute Richardson as a Christian polemic would point by point. Chewney confesses that a polemic was his first line of thinking. However, he wrote this tract to simply allow Scripture to teach the church the biblical doctrine of hell. As a result, his purpose in writing this treatise on hell was for the glory of God, both in his mercy and justice, for the comfort of all poor, believing souls, and for the terror of all wicked and ungodly wretches. This work is not a scan or facsimile and has been made easy to read with an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Today, few people would recognize the name "Rafael Sabatini", but in the 1920s and 1930s he was one of the most popular authors in the world. He was called "the Alexandre Dumas of Modern Fiction" and "the Prince of Storytellers", and he almost singlehandedly resurrected the genre of the swashbuckler both in literature and on film. Historical romances and adventure stories were Sabatini's stock-in-trade and the focal point of the majority of his literary writings, but for a brief time, at the beginning of his writing career, he must have had at least a passing interest in hypnotism, for he would write, not one, but two stories dealing with the subject. The first of his hypnotic tales was The Avenger, which appeared in the March 1909 issue of Gunter's Magazine. In The Avenger, we meet Roger Galliphant, a man with medical training and a strong interest in psychology and psychic research. Galliphant is also a powerful hypnotist who, while performing a simple demonstration of hypnotism in front of friends, discovers that an acquaintance of his, James Chester, has used hypnotism to commit at least two murders. Roger Galliphant, knowing the difficulty of proving Chester's crimes in a court of law, plans on avenging the murder victims' deaths, and he does so by using his own hypnotic powers against those of Chester's-and thus a battle between hypnotists ensues. Roger Galliphant also appears in Sabatini's second tale dealing with hypnosis, The Dream, a novelette published in the August 1912 issue of The Story-Teller. Galliphant appears toward the end of the story when he is needed as an eminent authority on hypnotism, and he must decide if Francis Orpington was under the influence of hypnotic suggestion when he killed an unarmed man.

Is there the need for something beyond what we experience in this universe to explain who we are?Is God necessary or can we happily exist without him? What is the end result of societies designed without an ethos attached to a metaphysical foundation? This book attempts to answer these plus many other questions, providing a final solution for the argument from evil, argument from free will, the need for objective morality and what is the essence of atheism and its consequences within society. The downward spiral humanity delves itself into when abandoning the sense of being, beyond what nature designed to be, is discussed in detail, just like the many downfalls of subjectivizing anything from morality to the meaning of our existence. This book addresses the consequences of replacing religious ethos with an atheist ethos including socialism, Marxism, feminism, Wokeness, red pilling and many forms of tribalism.A neologism is introduced ('faux-atheism') to classify those who wish to detach themselves from spiritual belief yet do not wish to live with its consequences, leading to compatibilism, humanism and other non-sensical designs, in a desperate attempt to salvage the inevitable: can humans understand and explain their existence without God?

One man's story of recovery from addiction, while growing up in central and shoreline Connecticut in the early 1960s. The journey of George Gdovin's life, as remembered in this collection of true stories, provides a telling history of a man who survived near-death at birth only to suffer for two decades in early adulthood with crippling alcohol and drug addiction. After losing the love of his first wife-and his sons for a time-because of addiction, a light eventually shined when caring people awoke a spiritually lost man and steered him into the miracle of recovery in his early forties. The story of Gdovin's life-as told in his own words-about growing up in central and shoreline Connecticut in the early-1960s as part of a close-knit Italian American family, becoming a Printer's Devil and then a master draftsman-while riding motorcycles on weekends from one Connecticut bar to another with his "posse"-are just some of the entertaining and informative chapters in this book. Thanks to the miracles that touched George Gdovin through the years, he could maintain sobriety and use that recovery process to help others in prisons and AA groups for over three decades. He also established a decorated 35-year career as a licensed municipal Building Official, met and married his spiritual equal, and helped save a historical lighthouse in Guilford, Connecticut.

A STUDY OF THE BIBLICAL TEXTS ON BAPTISMThe water of baptism which God meant to unite us has become the waterthat divides us. But the topic of baptism does not have to divide us-it canbe one of the Bible doctrines that submerges us in a common relationshipwith our Lord Jesus.Scripture is far from silent on the subject of baptism, yet history is strewnwith such a variety of perspectives that it becomes difficult to gain a clearview of what the Bible itself actually has to say.In thirteen chapters, Dr. Cottrell discusses twelve major texts on baptismin the New Testament by examining the meaning of the original words, thehistorical background, and the comparative references. The texts covered: - Matthew 28:18-20- Mark 16:15-16- John 3:3-5- Acts 2:38-39- Acts 22:16- Romans 6:3-4- 1 Corinthians 12:13- Galatians 3:26-27- Ephesians 5:25-27- Colossians 2:11-13- Titus 3:5- 1 Peter 3:21A thorough and landmark study, this book should be in the library ofevery serious Bible student.
