Los fantasmas debían ser ignorados, y el hecho de que su hija había desaparecido era una de esas cosas que no debían ser mencionadas. Esos habían sido siempre dos de los pilares fundamentales de la vida del Sr. Jones, pero cuando un fantasma que no era como los otros se cruzó en su camino a este hombre perfectamente ordinario de repente se le hizo imposible el desviar la mirada. El problema era que, en su intento desesperado por buscar una respuesta a algunas de esas preguntas que nunca se había atrevido a formular, se encontró frente a frente con una lista creciente de contradicciones, y con la creciente evidencia del hecho de que lo que estaba haciendo era tirar de un hilo que amenazaba con desbaratar el tejido de su propia vida. Sí, que los fantasmas estaban ahí era innegable, así como también era innegable el hecho de que su hija había desaparecido... pero a pesar de todos sus esfuerzos el Sr. Jones no alcanzaba a comprender el por qué.

The ghosts were to be ignored, and the fact that his daughter was missing was not to be mentioned. Those had long been two of the guiding principles in Mr. Jones's life, but when a ghost that is unlike any other crosses his path this perfectly ordinary man comes to the realization that he can no longer afford to look away. The problem is that, in his quest to find an answer to some of those questions he had never dared to ask before, he is soon confronted with the realization that the contradictions are piling up... and with the mounting evidence of the fact that, just by refusing to look the other way, what he is doing is pulling on a thread that threatens to cause his whole world to unravel. Yes, the ghosts were real, they were undeniably there, and his daughter was gone... but for the life of him Mr. Jones couldn't figure out why.

En el mundo contemporáneo se nos insiste en que debemos confiar en los expertos, que han estudiado mucho y que (en la mayoría de los casos) saben de qué están hablando. De hecho hemos llegado a un punto en el cual el cuestionarlos es mal visto, y donde los memes que muestran una lápida con el epitafio 'hice mi propia investigación' están por todos lados. El problema es que en nuestro mundo hiperespecializado esa práctica también trae consigo sus propios problemas ya que no es extraño que las perspectivas de esos expertos resulten demasiado estrechas para ser útiles. ¿Sabes quién no tiene ese problema? Los autores de ciencia ficción, cuya subsistencia depende de su capacidad para ver esos hechos, doblarlos en todas direcciones, y combinarlos con otros procedentes de las disciplinas más disímiles en formas nuevas e inesperadas, cosa que les (o mejor dicho nos) proporciona una perspectiva absolutamente única... y es precisamente de eso de lo que se trata este libro.La otra cosa de la que se trata es de la forma en la que la ciencia y la ficción interactúan en los dominios de la ciencia misma, interacción que los científicos en ocasiones se niegan incluso a reconocer, pero la cual está siempre ahí, en el trasfondo. ¿Quieres un ejemplo? Las predicciones respecto al cambio climático. Dichas predicciones tienen indudablemente una base científica, pero también son, a fin de cuentas, una forma de especulación, y a medida que pase el tiempo, y que el futuro se transforme en el pasado, podremos saber en que medida estaban esos científicos en lo cierto, y cuando eso suceda sus predicciones serán, o reconocidas como hechos, o menospreciadas como 'una mera ficción'.En fin, este libro trata de diversos temas en los cuales los hechos y la ficción tienden a sobreponerse, desde las preguntas concernientes a qué puede estar oculto en nuestro pasado distante; a la búsqueda de vida y civilizaciones extraterrestres; a la pregunta de qué forma va a tomar el fin del mundo; a la forma en la cual ha evolucionado la inteligencia artificial; y por último a como la forma en la que se ha acelerado el cambio ha transformado nuestra perspectiva del futuro en sí.Sí, sé que esta puede parecer una mezcla absurda de temas, pero dado que este libro puede ser descrito como un grito de guerra contra la especialización eso es algo que probablemente cabe esperar.

¿X o Y? ¿Utopía o distopía? En un mundo en el que la muerte se ha convertido en cosa del pasado la respuesta depende de X o Y. El intentar describir la forma que una sociedad futura puede llegar a tomar ha sido desde siempre uno de los subgeneros más populares de la ciencia ficción, pero a pesar de ello en Laira Clea Saal ha logrado crear una perspectiva refrescantemente diferente. Que hay algo único respecto a este libro, que se destaca por su minuciosa atención al más mínimo detalle, se hace evidente desde el momento en que el lector se encuentra con el índice. En este libro se describe un mundo en el cual el concepto de 'muerte' ha desaparecido por completo, pero todo tiene su precio ¿Cuál fue ese precio y valió la pena el pagarlo? Estas son dos de las preguntas que, si bien no son respondidas en forma directa, le dan cohesión a la obra. Una de las cosas que contribuyen a hacer atractivo este libro es la forma en la que la autora se niega a pasar por alto los aspectos más espinosos de la transición entre nuestro mundo y el que habitan sus personajes. El camino de A a B es descrito claramente, como lo son los sacrificios necesarios a cada paso. Es una mirada decididamente introspectiva de una sociedad futura, cosa que al principio puede hacer que el lector tenga problemas al tratar de orientarse, pero esas dificultades desaparecen al cabo de unas pocas página. En general Laira es una lectura sumamente disfrutable que se aleja de los senderos más conocidos. Desgraciadamente, en un mercado que insiste en encasillar tanto a los libros como a los autores, el hecho de que esta obra sea radicalmente diferente puede dar como resultado que sea pasada por alto.

In the modern world we are told to trust the experts, that they have studied a lot, and (usually) know what they are talking about. In fact we have come to a point where questioning those experts is seriously frowned upon, with memes showing a gravestone with an epitaph that reads something like 'I did my own research' being all over the place. The problem is that, in our hyper-specialized world, that practice comes with its own set of problems, as those experts' views at times have grown a little too narrow for comfort, so much so that they tend to miss the big picture. You know who doesn't have that problem? Science fiction writers, whose bread and butter is taking those facts, bending them every which way, and combining them with other facts that have been taken from the most disparate disciplines in fresh and interesting new ways, ways that often provide them (or rather us) with a rather unique perspective. That is what this book is about.It is also about the ways in which science and fiction interact in the realm of science itself, an interaction scientists are often reluctant to even acknowledge, but one that is always there, lurking in the background. Want an example? The predictions regarding climate change. Those are unquestionably based on science, but they are also, at their core, a form of speculation, and as time goes by, as the future becomes the past, we will be able to tell whether or not those scientists got it right, and their predictions will either come to be recognized as facts, or wind up being dismissed as 'mere fiction'.Anyway, this book looks at a number of areas where fact and fiction tend to overlap, from questions about what may be lurking in our distant past; to the quest for alien life, and alien civilizations; to wondering how the world ends; to how artificial intelligence has evolved; and finally to how the rapid pace of change has transformed the way in which we see the future itself.Yes, that can come across as a rather wide array of subjects, but given that this book can also be seen as a battlecry against specialization that is probably to be expected.

Cuando un árbol cae en el bosque hay alguien ahí para oírlo, y ésta es su historia. El Caminante de las Sombras es una historia extraña acerca de una entidad cuyo único propósito es servir como testigo, recordar a los mundos que han sido olvidados, y conservar viva la memoria de aquellas especies que, habiendo alcanzado la autoconsciencia, han dejado de existir. Es una existencia solitaria que no tiene ni principio ni fin... una que se ve interrumpida cuando el Caminante se queda varado en un mundo cuyos habitantes son literalmente alérgicos a su presencia. Incapaz de seguir su marcha, al Caminante no le queda más remedio que buscar algo que le permita hacerle frente a ese obstáculo inesperado... y al hacerlo puede incluso llegar a descubrir un secreto que su conocimiento casi infinito le había ocultado.

X or Y? Utopia or dystopia? In a world in which death has become a thing of the past, the answer may well depend on X or Y. The attempt to portray what kind of form human society could possibly take in the future has long been one of the staples of science fiction, but in spite of that fact in Laira Clea Saal has managed to come up with a surprisingly fresh take on that particular subject. That there is something unique about this book becomes apparent from the moment the reader hits the Table of Contents, and the attention to detail that has gone into crafting a world that, while significantly different from our own, comes across as its believable descendant is immediately apparent. In this world life is seemingly perfect, and the very notion of 'death' has been effectively vanquished, but all things come at a price. What was that price, and was it worth it? Those are two of the questions that, while never openly addressed, hold this book together. One of the most appealing things about this short work is the way in which the author refuses to shy away from some of the trickier details of the transition from the world we live in to the one inhabited by the characters, something that is all too often missing in this genre. The road from A to B is clearly mapped, as are the trade offs that were made along the way. It is an unapologetically introspective insider's view of that future society, a fact that at first may make it hard for readers to keep themselves oriented, though those difficulties vanish after the first few pages. Over all Laira is an enjoyable read that gets away from the beaten path. Unfortunately, in a market that insists on pigeonholing each and every book, the fact that this one refuses to play along may well cause it to get lost in the shuffle.
