This book provides an analysis of the process of democratic decentralisation in India and Gandhi¿s vision of decentralised democracy, the Gram Swaraj. It looks at the historical evolution of decentralised local governance structures since ancient times till Indiäs independence, and then critically discusses its developments since Independence.
