The Untold Stories of the American Forces Vietnam NetworkThe American Forces Vietnam Network (AFVN) was the military broadcast network that served American service personnel during the Vietnam War. But much of what has been previously written about the AFVN has been overstated and far from comprehensive, including the most famous work: the movie Good Morning, Vietnam. Hot Mics and TV Lights is non-fiction but reads like a barnstorming novel. Providing the perspective of thirty-seven individuals who served with AFVN over the course of the war, Hot Mics and TV Lights gives the reader a broad sense of what those serving with the network experienced.Although many of the stories are humorous, AFVN suffered significant casualties. Five broadcasters were taken prisoner, and at least one radio announcer earned a Purple Heart while on air. But typical war stories do not dominate this book. Instead, you'll hear the memories of "Bobbie the Weathergirl," Vietnam's biggest TV celebrity, and Wheel of Fortune game show host Pat Sajak when he was an AFVN deejay.Hot Mics and TV Lights is not just another book about the Vietnam War, but rather the chronicle of a storied broadcast network and its personnel who did their jobs as a costly war was being waged, often just outside their studio doors.

What were the real life stories and legacies of the six women who married Henry VIII? Discover these extraordinary queens through the court culture that recorded and shaped their often tempestuous lives: their letters, heraldic devices, books, love tokens and, of course, their portraits. The women who married Henry VIII have come to be encapsulated in a six-word rhyme: `Divorced, Beheaded, Died / Divorced, Beheaded, Survived¿. But what were their real stories and legacies? Six Lives: A Portrait of Six Tudor Queens reveals the extraordinary lives, and afterlives, of Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Katherine Parr. A source of fascination to historians and writers down the centuries, each of the queens, and their relationship with the king, has been the subject extensive research and a source of creative inspiration. This publication focuses on the material traces of the queens and the court culture that shaped their lives, extensively illustrated with their letters, heraldic devices, books, love tokens and, of course, their portraits. The book begins with an examination of the women as cultural phenomena, looking at the ways in which their lives have inspired storytellers, from Shakespeare¿s Henry VIII to the musical Six, and the role that portraiture has played in the performance of the queens¿ stories. An overview essay examines the queens¿ self-presentation through portraiture before individual chapters consider each of their relationships with the king, their social and familial networks and their patronage. Each chapter is accompanied by a thematic piece written by an expert scholar, taking a closer look at an element of court culture, ranging from music and jewellery, to court pageantry and heraldry. The publication accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the National Portrait Gallery in Summer 2024.

  • - His life and his inspiration from the Ancient Greeks

The purpose of this book is to highlight the enormous influence of the ancient Greek civilization and Epicurean philosophy on the great historical figure of Thomas Jefferson and, through him, on modern society as a whole. I hope you'll enjoy this journey into the thoughts and actions of Thomas Jefferson through his life and writings presented from a different aspect. Thomas Jefferson studied the ancient Greek and Greco-Roman civilization and the knowledge gained from that became the foundation for his inspiration and conduct. His excellent command of both Greek and Latin enabled him to read from the original texts; an ability that helped him discern which of the ancient writings led to the transition from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment. The most important result of his study was that, by utilizing this knowledge, he shaped himself into an enlightened person with the aim of establishing a free society that would offer everyone the possibility of personal happiness. In a letter, dated October 31, 1823, to the Greek scholar, Adamantios Korais, who was credited with paving the way for Greek Independence, Jefferson wrote: Nothing is more likely to forward this object than a study of the fine models of science left by their ancestors, to whom we also are all indebted for the lights which originally led ourselves out of Gothic darkness... Jefferson delved deep into the study of antiquity by examining much of the history, poetry, architecture, and philosophy of that time. However, he clearly showed a preference for a particular philosophical school. In a letter to William Short, dated October 31, 1819, he states: "As you say of yourself, I too am an Epicurean. I consider the genuine (not the imputed) doctrines of Epicurus as containing everything rational in moral philosophy which Greece and Rome have left us".Jefferson applied his philosophy, both on an individual and collective level, throughout his entire life. He supported the idea that the individual should enjoy a lifestyle through which his mind might be as fulfilled as his body. The pleasure of reading and contemplating upon universal truths through the study of texts was to be accompanied by necessary material goods and exercise to maintain the health of the body. These were the principles through which he aimed to lead humanity on an evolutionary course of exploration to identify the fundamental elements for the creation of a civilization that would ensure the happiness of people more than any other system of his time.To these ends, he was fortunate to be born in the New World, on a continent far away from the ideological chains that held Europe captive and prevented the application of the enlightened and progressive precepts of the time. Distance afforded him to be unaffected by the rivalries between the theocratic Middle Ages and the Renaissance which, despite the important role it played in history, did not manage to transcend its own biases. Jefferson was able to see the ancient world with a clear mind and thus managed to proceed "undefiled" and without hesitation to definitive conclusions concerning the happiness of the individual and that of society in the contemporary epoch. Guardians is a new first-hand account from Air National Guardsman Julia Maki Pyrah, who describes her experiences on the streets of DC protecting the people of our nation's capital and their right to assemble, while attempting to stop the destruction of monuments and local businesses from those that were looking to cause it harm. Maki, a Navy veteran that now serves in the DC Air National Guard, shares in candid detail her view of the events from a unique perspective on the streets of D.C."The normal complement of Secret Service in and around the White House, combined with the Metropolitan Police and Park Police were not going to cut it. They needed more support... and quickly," explains Maki. As she continues her duties and notices small acts of defiance by groups of people prior to riot escalation, she remarks, "It was a smallrebellion of sorts, the beginning of people becoming untouchable by authorities." With contributions from other Guardsmen in her unit, she describes the reality of the challenges that were faced by putting her suburb-mom life on hold, as duty called during this unusual activation of Guardsmen from all over the country.

This book of mine is devoted to all those people who left their country and went abroad with new hopes, new enthusiasm, new expectations and new ambitions. Everyone remembers their homeland while living abroad. Everybody gets hurt. And it is not so easy to mix in foreign languages, foreign people, and foreign living. When one has to battle to live in one's own country, it is not so easy for anyone to fulfil dreams on foreign soil. I would like to dedicate this book to all those friends who have raised the flag of their success abroad, living outside India. The culture of India and the history of India have been illuminated. "If India is liberated, the power will go into the hands of goons and freebies. All Indian leaders will be very weak, like effigies of straw."These words were once spoken by the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in protest against the independence of India. Today the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of the same Winston Churchill is becoming a person of Indian origin. By making India their colony, the dominance of Indians is increasing in our country of Britishers who ruled us for 200 years. In terms of population of Indians living outside India, reverse colonization of UK is happening.During the British rule over India, 10 times the number of Britishers who lived in India is now living in England. According to the 1941 census, there were around 150,000 Englishmen living in India. But today the population of people of Indian origin in England is more than 1.6 million.

Many Americans believe Barak Obama represents a hopeful future for America. But does he also reflect the American politics of the past? This book offers the broadest and best-informed understanding on the meaning of the "Obama phenomenon" to date. Paul Street was on the ground throughout the Iowa campaign, and his stories of the rising Obama phenomenon are poignant. Yet the author's background in American political history allows him to explore the deeper meanings of Obama's remarkable political career. He looks at Obama in relation to contemporary issues of class, race, war, and empire. He considers Obama in the context of our nation's political history, with comparisons to FDR, JFK, Bill Clinton, and other leaders. Street finds that the Obama persona, crafted by campaign consultants and filtered through dominant media trends, masks the "change" candidate's adherence to long-prevailing power structures and party doctrines. He shows how American political culture has produced misperceptions by the electorate of Obama's positions and values. Obama is no magical exception to the narrow-spectrum electoral system and ideological culture that have done so much to define and limit the American political tradition. Yet the author suggests key ways in which Obama potentially advances democratic transformation. Street makes recommendations on how citizens can productively respond to and act upon Obama's influence and the broader historical and social forces that have produced his celebrity and relevance. He also lays out a real agenda for change for the new presidential administration, one that addresses the recent failures of democratic politics.

Were the fates of the Wilhelmine Empire determined, at least at times, by a court camarilla, as contemporary publicists and even statesmen who bore responsibility at the time suspected? How far did Emperor Wilhelm II's influencing by the men in his immediate environment really go? Did homoeroticism also play a central role? In his carefully researched study the author explores these questions, which are usually ignored by historians, on the basis of extensive archival sources and sometimes arrives at surprising results.

Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, left an indelible mark on American history through his progressive policies, dynamic leadership, and dedication to environmental conservation. From his early days as a rancher and soldier to his transformative presidency, Roosevelt's biography is filled with adventurous exploits and impactful political achievements. Born into a wealthy family in New York City, Roosevelt overcame health challenges during his childhood, developing a determined spirit that would define his life. He pursued a rigorous education and demonstrated a keen interest in natural history and public service from a young age. Roosevelt's political career began in the New York State Assembly, where he quickly earned a reputation as a reform-minded legislator. His leadership during the Spanish-American War earned him national recognition and paved the way for his appointment as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Roosevelt's ascent to the presidency came after the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901. As President, Roosevelt championed a progressive agenda focused on tackling the growing power of monopolies, advocating for workers' rights, and promoting social welfare reforms. His Square Deal program sought to balance the interests of labor, business, and consumers, ushering in an era of increased government regulation and intervention in the economy. One of Roosevelt's most significant legacies lies in his commitment to environmental conservation. He set aside vast amounts of land for national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges, establishing a precedent for the protection of natural resources. Roosevelt's conservation efforts were driven by his belief in the responsible stewardship of the nation's natural heritage for future generations. Beyond domestic affairs, Roosevelt played an influential role in shaping America's role on the world stage. He advocated for a more assertive foreign policy, emphasizing American naval power and intervening in international conflicts to protect American interests. His "Big Stick" diplomacy and efforts to build the Panama Canal solidified the United States' position as a global power. Roosevelt's dynamic personality, assertive leadership style, and commitment to progressive ideals made him a beloved and controversial figure. He faced criticism for his expansionist policies and for his willingness to use executive power to advance his agenda. Nevertheless, his impact on American society and politics cannot be understated. Theodore Roosevelt's biography serves as a testament to his boundless energy, intellectual curiosity, and dedication to public service. His progressive policies and conservation efforts continue to shape American politics and environmental consciousness. Roosevelt's legacy as a transformative president, fearless reformer, and advocate for social justice and environmental stewardship remains relevant and influential to this day.

What started out as an epilogue turned into a book of its own. The 13 stories you will read are compelling. They should be. Told by actual combat veterans of the Vietnam conflict, they reflect on so many battles that were fought; battles that were of the "kill, or be killed" type. The stories are, at times, raw. Other times they are humorous. Some end well, some do not. I learned that these men still carry many burdens that started when they got to Vietnam. I found that the end of their time in service never really ended. Many still suffer. Agent Orange was a culprit. P.T.S.D. was another. None were unscathed. I was able to interview two family members of a pilot who lost his life in Vietnam. From this, I learned of the long-lasting effects on family. Each I interviewed a POW from that conflict. I still find it hard to believe that this man came back alive. He's still alive and using his story for good. One thing for sure is that every one of these fine gentlemen are heroes of the highest order. I found them humble and unassuming about taking on this role. I hope this book will elevate them to their proper place, along with their countless comrades in arms.

When will you have kids? Sounds familiar? I bet it does! The decision to not have children didn't come lightly. I started recognizing the signs at a very young age. When I was growing up, I had nephews and nieces around. I babysat some of them since I was about seven years old. I could barely keep up with them - the tantrums, the relentless crying, the mess, you name it.Kids drama aside - I saw how hard my siblings (and my parents) worked, and I couldn't help but wonder, can I do this when I grow up?Then adulthood kicked in. Societal expectations are running wild, and the world is spinning around. As questions about my childless life continue to mount, the universe continues to show me how much I am better off without children.I ask myself, is having children worth it? Absolutely - for some people, but not me.I, for one, have chosen to celebrate the joys of not having children. It is perfectly normal (and okay) for people to prioritize their careers, pursue their passions, and travel the world (or do anything they want), all without the added responsibility of raising children. And for those of you who are wondering, no - I don't need to be a mother to live a happy and fulfilling life. Don't get me wrong. I love children but from a distance.Join me as I explore what it's like to be childless and how I find fulfillment in life, sharing my personal experiences and research-backed information.
