This book recounts my harrowing adventure that began on March 7, 2013, when at the age of 25 I suffered a hemorrhagic stroke due to a birth defect. Never would I have imagined that death would stare me in the face at such a young age. Death has been and is a familiar and constant reality in the life of my family because my dad is a funeral director. I thought I had my future figured out, the plans had been drafted. I was in the midst of working on a master's degree, but all of that changed in a single day. My dreams have been transformed, but my principles remain grounded, my faith in God remains vibrant, and my ambition remains intact. I shall persevere against this unforeseen circumstance and develop into the man God has called me to be. God spared me from a premature death for a reason. I am here and I have a destiny to fulfill. This true story shares with you not only the miraculous events of that Thursday in March, but the subsequent recovery time, which I am still in the midst of. As you read my story I hope you are inspired and encouraged. I hope you might see God's faithfulness, His goodness and His ability to perform miracles today through my testimony. July 2006, the embers that settled internally in my youngest son Lonny were red hot ready to combust into flames but they were different; they took on the form of fatigue, swelling, fever, fainting, weight loss, etc. The one person brave enough to sound the alarm was his aunt, Samantha, who insisted he see a doctor. Early October he finally saw a doctor that said the "weight gain" was fluid buildup; he prescribed meds and scheduled tests three weeks out. October 18, 2006 at 10:30pm, my sister, Deborah, called and told me Lonny was admitted to the hospital for kidney failure and possible dialysis! I didn't want to let her words in. In my search for materials to teach a neighborhood bible study, God gave me the idea to use pictures, objects and parts of the body to help children memorize the scriptures. Mary Spann has taught in the Arkansas Public School System for over thirty years. She grew up in Jackson, MS and attended Jackson State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, later earning a Master of Science in Education at Ouachita Baptist University. She and her husband Silas were stationed in Arkansas by the United States Air Force, where they still reside with their two children Keisha and Silas.
