Taiwan, also called the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan, has remained a place not too well known to westerners. With a population of 25 million, Taiwan is the seventh largest economy in Asia and the 20th largest economy in the world. Yet there is much more to Taiwan than just the size of its economy, or that the Taiwanese are among the most affluent in Asia. Taiwan is an island of climate contrasts, a country with a rich culture going back centuries, and with vibrant major cities like Taipei, Tainan and Taichung City (as described in the book). It is a country with a mountainous inter-land, many rural farming villages, and tropical rain forests. Taiwan's people include the Austronesians (the first people to set foot in Taiwan), immigrants from Fujian province (the province opposite of Taiwan), many Chinese immigrants from northern China (who brought Mandarin), and the Hakka. The most important religions are Buddhism, Taoism and native Chinese ancestor worship. For the world traveler, or for an expatriate living there, Taiwan is worth exploring and knowing.

When I had been bullied in school for being gay I could not have imagined that, years later, I would be bullied the workplace, but I was, and not just for being gay. Many books have been written about kids being bullied in school, but very few books have been written about people being bullied in the workplace. I had to ask myself why that was. The answer was simple, because most folks who are bullied in the workplace, whether they be male or female, are, most times, terrified to come forward and report to higher management that someone, or more than one someone, whether they be male or female, is bullying them. Why are victims of bullies in the workplace terrified to report it to upper management or HR? Because, as you will see in my book, most times when a person is being bullied in the workplace it is being done by someone in upper management, and, as I have found out, HR will stand by the bully in upper management. And yes, bullies in the workplace can be male or femaleas I sadly found out for myself.

The Ghosts in our defense are the military families behind the military service members. They are the backbone of our defense and not recognized. The military family housing problems are irreconcilable and have been for decades. The old housing with hazardous substances involved direct exposures to the families over the years. The new housing constructed by the Department of Defense and the public private ventures (PPV) only exacerbated the problems with hazardous substance exposures. The recognition that the construction of homes on land with organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and the health effects to the families is discussed. The truth and propaganda associated with the facts of direct exposures to the carcinogenic OCPs can be confusing. The reality of the fear of reprisal, discrimination, and retaliation is the reality of the families. The ability to speak up or to bring attention to the health effects of exposures is hampered by the demand for the burden of proof by the families. Is the spreading of contaminated topsoil in and around the homes safe? Where is the supporting information for the propaganda that it is safe? Of course, the families do not have the wherewithal to provide such evidence and we find that the scarce information and data for the direct human exposures to be unreliable or not available. The future concern for the mistreatment of the families is the impact to the readiness of the nation's defense.
