In this collection of poetry, individuals living with mental illness write in an intimate, evocative and vivid style their longing for acceptance, respect and recovery. For the mentally ill, writing poetically by using imagery, figurative language, symbolism and metaphor is a safe passage to capture hope, redemption and and purpose. Individuals living with disorders on the Schizophrenia Spectrum and Bipolar Disorder are a vessel of truth and writing poetically transforms that truth in a way that makes it amenable to healing. What is dormant and shameful to disclose is awakened, and it energizes one to act in some way to heal and defeat ongoing devaluation, loneliness, stigmatization and alienation. In the end, it is hope that gives life meaning and sustains faith for the good life. Without hope, one lives in despair and futility. The evocative nature of poetry transforms silence, alienation and insignificance to sound. The written word, the poem, is shared so others can understand and empathize with the mentally ill to abolish alienation, stigma and to welcome integration. The healthy mind will invariably understand the depth of suffering of the mentally ill and through empathy, the ability to take the role of the other, become more compassionate toward the mentally ill. Although each of the poets in this book lives a mental illness, they are unique in how they creatively express their thoughts.

Frank expected the first night to be the hardest, with the loneliness of being pulled from family, friends, and what is familiar. But the windows kept high and small to discourage attempts at escape, and to shield the sun, that's what bugged him most. The daily death of the sun, the hope of new life after all this; it did not take much to add the two together and wish to slip beneath the soil yourself. Still, Frank had hated his life on the farm, but that is what it means to be human in Odessa.Mistress Sally Mae Alexander stared at the token for a few moments before she set it on a table next to her, and speared a mushroom with her fingernail, bringing it to her slightly curved mouth. She did not know what she was purchasing, but neither did anyone else.

Somewhere between the tiny northern Minnesota towns of Littlefork and Ray, flows the raging Rat Root River. If one was to follow the river north toward International Falls one would come upon an animal kingdom called Timbertown. This is not really a town in the sense that we would know it, but more a collection of dens and burrows and beaver houses, where animals who have lived in harmony for some time, have learned to congregate and communicate. There are probably many such animal communities in northern Minnesota, however Timbertown is different because it has a story to tell. There is a legend that came out of Timbertown about a bear, a beaver, and a boar. I don't know when this legend started, for I, of course, wasn't there, but I think it was some time ago, many generations ago, perhaps.

PRAIRIE TAILS is a volume featuring citizens who reside, work, love, scorn, struggle, fight, mourn and question in America's plains country. These are characters not of the West, the Southwest, or even the Midwest. They inhabit an environment boasting of flat land to the horizon, wide farms, thick intractable woods, small towns, big cities, large ideas and cussedness. Any resemblance these souls may have to real people would be purely magical.

This memoir is about alternative paths of viewing life. How the creative mind can set its own course. How youthful adventure can grow into something others may find terrifying. How youth can be fortunate to survive the folly of its own nature. How consequences are learned by practical experiences. How practical experiences become the most efficient teacher. Having led an unconventional childhood, I was always captivated by unusual circumstances during my formative years. I grew up viewing life differently. To me, dangerous was adventurous. A challenge was something that required action. I sought creativity where others sought common place. The word "trite" was not in my vocabulary. Creative inspiration pushed me towards my life's goals. As I grew older, it was my love of unusual experiences that developed my mindset. I listened carefully to the advice those over 60 offered. I questioned what others ignored. I chose the direction of my life based on fulfillment rather than wealth. This memoir was written out of pure joy. Part adventure, part insight of the human condition, and part foolhardy examples of youth; This book will reveal a colorful perspective on life. Happy reading.
