At some point in their careers, most physicists make an attempt to read and understand Newton's Principia. Unfortunately, it is an extremely difficult book -- it quickly becomes clear that one does not simply 'read' the Principia. Even for a professional physicist, Newton's prose (written in Latin and translated to English) is difficult to follow. His diagrams and figures are complicated and confusing. To understand fully what Newton had done, the problems he posed would have to be solved by the reader.Newton's geometric methods and techniques, and the geometry and vocabulary that passed for common knowledge in the late 17th century, are now arcane and all but inaccessible to a modern reader. The deepening tensions between China and the US, as well as between Beijing and Delhi, have set the stage for a new strategic partnership between Washington and Delhi. Amidst Washington's competition with Beijing, the Himalayan region girding the underbelly of China has acquired an importance of its own. The maritime perspective of the US has also raised the value of the subcontinent's waters and provided an incentive for Washington to turn new attention to the strategic islands of the Maldives and Sri Lanka.Taken together, these factors presage a transformation in the interaction between the US and the South Asian subcontinent in the coming years. This book, hence, brings into the conversation these recent changes and sheds new light on contemporary US-South Asia relations.

This book examines the history of the military comfort women system in China. It aims to give readers a deeper insight into the origin, establishment, and operations of comfort stations, as well as tell the sufferings of comfort women, many of whom were coerced into service. It does so by providing historical evidence gathered over 25 years of field studies from 172 comfort stations which were operated in Shanghai, which once had the largest number of military comfort stations, during the Japanese occupation.

Singapore's success as a global city is in no small part attributable to its stance on foreign labour and immigrants, illustrated by a largely welcoming but discerning immigration regime to fulfil vital socio-economic needs. However, this fairly liberal policy on immigration has been met with substantial disquiet over the last decade. Xenophobic tendencies have surfaced periodically and have been compounded by the Covid-19 pandemic.This edited volume spotlights these contemporary issues on immigrant integration in Singapore, and adopts a functional approach by explicitly bridging academic and practitioner perspectives. The chapters are organised into three sections. As globalization and the flow of labor across the world accelerated during the latter part of the 20th century, the presence of foreign-born workers in a country's labor market became one of the most prominent and controversial features of modern economies. Countries that facilitated the arrival of foreign-born individuals often benefited from the increase in labor supply. An important channel for the benefits is through lower prices for consumer goods and services in the host country. This is not surprising because immigration is just another form of international trade, which often leads to cost savings and more diversity in the market. The immigrants themselves have also gained from international migration as it provides an opportunity to improve one's standard of living, pass remittances to family in the country of origin, and find new opportunities for general human flourishing in newly adopted surroundings. Despite the myriad benefits that can result from the free movement of labor around the world, there is still deep concern and political debate about immigration's aftermath. The main economic concern, apart from social concerns such as social cohesion, centers on whether international migrants adversely impact labor market opportunities of natives. The labor market prospects for foreign-born individuals, both in an absolute sense and in comparison to natives, are also very different across continents, as well as between countries that are in close proximity to one another. This variation could be driven by differences in the flexibility and structure of the host country's labor market or differences in the characteristics of the immigrants themselves. Examining the relative importance of these and other possible factors is another main theme in the study of immigration and the labor market. It is also addressed in the research presented in this Handbook.
