Amos Wilder's poetry drew from an inexhaustible well of his Christian belief in the destiny of man and nature, seeking always to find fresh ways and language to invoke the imperatives of faith and spiritual life in a modern era. This collection of thirty-five poems, the third of Amos Wilder's four books of published poetry, appeared in 1942 in the midst of World War II. Shaping it to speak to a world in crisis, Wilder included five poems republished from his first volume of poetry (Battle-Retrospect, 1923) and twelve poems from his second, (Arachne, 1928, with two major poems revised), both conceived under the long shadow of World War I, a war in which he had fought. The last poem written for this collection, "Homage," is dedicated to his bother Thornton ("to T. N. W., 1942"), then serving with US Army Air Force Intelligence in North Africa.

Symbolic interactionism is a social-scientific perspective that seeks to describe how human beings create meaning with one another in their daily lives. Since the world is populated by symbols that characterize all interactions among living beings, this book explores the importance of symbols and symbolic interaction while moving beyond the social sciences to theological studies. By examining the way symbolic interaction is portrayed among characters in the Gospel according to John in the "water narratives," this book argues that the Bible is a symbol that is itself full of symbols whose meanings are worthy of our study. Scripture has always played an important role in Christian theology. This study provides an issue oriented overview of the concepts of Scripture in Protestant theology from the 16th century Reformation onward. It then sets forth the concepts of Scripture in the theologies of two contemporary systematic theologians: W. Pannenberg and D. G. Bloesch. It analyzes, compares and evaluates the theological and anthropological presuppositions that have influenced their concept of Scripture. Despite fundamentally different starting points and other significant distinctions Pannenberg and Bloesch reveal surprising similarities. This seems to suggest that for both the concept of Scripture is determined ultimately by presuppositions that are derived and shaped extra scripturam".

Dale C. Allison, Jr., is the Richard J. Dearborn Professor of New Testament, Princeton Theological Seminary. Previously he was Errett M. Grable Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity. Before then, he served on the faculties of Texas Christian University (Fort Worth, Texas) and Friends University (Wichita, Kansas). His areas of expertise include Second Temple Judaism, and he is the author of books on early Christian eschatology, the Gospel of Matthew, the so-called Sayings Source or Q, and the historical Jesus. He has also written The Luminous Dusk, a book on religious experience in the modern world, and a full-length commentary on the Testament of Abraham. His most recently published works are The Love There That's Sleeping: The Art and Spirituality of George Harrison, The Historical Christ and the Theological Jesus, and Constructing Jesus: Memory, History, and Imagination. He has recently completed a full-length commentary on the Epistle of James (to be published in 2013) and is currently working on a commentary on 4 Baruch (Paraleipomena Jeremiou) as well as on a book of reflections on death. He is married to Kristine Allison and they have three children.

Socio-Historical Examination of Religion and Ministry (SHERM journal) is a biannual, not-for-profit, free peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes the latest social-scientific, historiographic, and ecclesiastic research on religious institutions and their ministerial practices. SHERM is dedicated to the critical and scholarly inquiry of historical and contemporary religious phenomena, both from within particular religious traditions and across cultural boundaries, so as to inform the broader socio-historical analysis of religion and its related fields of study. The purpose of SHERM is to provide a scholarly medium for the social-scientific study of religion where specialists can publish advanced studies on religious trends, theologies, rituals, philosophies, socio-political influences, or experimental and applied ministry research in the hopes of generating enthusiasm for the vocational and academic study of religion while fostering collegiality among religious specialists.
