  • av Amos N Wilder
    449,-

The republication of this book resurrects a landmark volume hailed when published as "the first major effort to assess modern poetry from the point of view of its contributions to the spiritual life of our times." Resting on the assumption that poetry offers "a mirror in which the world can know itself and in which it can read its deepest dilemmas and its deepest omens," Wilder explores the work of W. B. Yeats, Ezra Pound, Robert Frost, D. H. Lawrence, T. S. Eliot, Conrad Aiken, Archibald MacLeish, Hart Crane, W. H. Auden, Kenneth Patchen, and Robinson Jeffers, among others. Wilder investigates the ethical and religious attitudes behind these works, the sources behind them, and their importance for religious and spiritual life in the modern era. The author also discusses the work of leading critics and provides a guide and bibliography to the sources of modernism's roots in America and abroad, as well as biographical sketches of the poets and critics discussed.

Amos Wilder's poetry drew from an inexhaustible well of his Christian belief in the destiny of man and nature, seeking always to find fresh ways and language to invoke the imperatives of faith and spiritual life in a modern era. This collection of thirty-five poems, the third of Amos Wilder's four books of published poetry, appeared in 1942 in the midst of World War II. Shaping it to speak to a world in crisis, Wilder included five poems republished from his first volume of poetry (Battle-Retrospect, 1923) and twelve poems from his second, (Arachne, 1928, with two major poems revised), both conceived under the long shadow of World War I, a war in which he had fought. The last poem written for this collection, "Homage," is dedicated to his bother Thornton ("to T. N. W., 1942"), then serving with US Army Air Force Intelligence in North Africa.

  • - A Contextual Study on the Symbolism of Water
    av Elia Shabani Mligo
    275,-

Symbolic interactionism is a social-scientific perspective that seeks to describe how human beings create meaning with one another in their daily lives. Since the world is populated by symbols that characterize all interactions among living beings, this book explores the importance of symbols and symbolic interaction while moving beyond the social sciences to theological studies. By examining the way symbolic interaction is portrayed among characters in the Gospel according to John in the "water narratives," this book argues that the Bible is a symbol that is itself full of symbols whose meanings are worthy of our study. Hence, the interaction of characters in the Gospel of John and the whole Bible, along with the symbols they use in their interactions, demonstrates that symbolism is directly linked to human life because symbols are major means of communication, and without symbols, human beings are in chaos.

How can you as a unique individual grow older in creative, life-enhancing ways? In On Growing Older, Eugene Bianchi provides a psycho-spiritual guidebook toward wisdom for every man and woman who wishes to age with purpose and grace. In twenty-four reflections, he explores such crucial issues encountered by every individual in the aging process as transforming work, remembering ourselves, developing respect, opening to creativity, living truthfully, making friends/enemies, letting go, peacemaking elders, reclaiming nature, dealing with loneliness, suffering, loving, hoping, forgiving, cultivating joy, and being religious. Each chapter concludes with practical techniques, imagery, and suggestions to help the reader meditate on and personalize the themes discussed. Artist Lee Lawson's illustrations set a contemplative tone and focus throughout this wise and helpful book.

  • - Imaging God in a Dangerous Time
    av Brian J Walsh
    275,-

Where is Western culture going? What should Christians think about it?Those who already ask these questions often come up with confused answers. Those who do not are, arguably, living in a fool's paradise (or a fool's hell.)In this second edition of Subversive Christianity, Brian Walsh returns to the themes of cultural discernment that he unpacked more than twenty years ago. In a new Postscript, Walsh revisits Francis Fukuyama, Bruce Cockburn, and the prophet Jeremiah and asks, Where are we now? In light of 9/11 and the world economic crisis of 2008, how do we discern the times, and what does that discernment tell us about the calling of the church?

Scripture has always played an important role in Christian theology. This study provides an issue oriented overview of the concepts of Scripture in Protestant theology from the 16th century Reformation onward. It then sets forth the concepts of Scripture in the theologies of two contemporary systematic theologians: W. Pannenberg and D. G. Bloesch. It analyzes, compares and evaluates the theological and anthropological presuppositions that have influenced their concept of Scripture. Despite fundamentally different starting points and other significant distinctions Pannenberg and Bloesch reveal surprising similarities. This seems to suggest that for both the concept of Scripture is determined ultimately by presuppositions that are derived and shaped extra scripturam".

Mystics are artists; and the stuff in which they work is most often human life. They want to heal the disharmony between the actual and the real: and since, in the white-hot radiance of that faith, hope, and charity which burns in them, they discern such a reconciliation to be possible, they are able to work for it with a singleness of purpose and an invincible optimism denied to other men.

Alexei Khomiakov (1804-1860), a great Russian thinker, one of the founders of the Slavophile school of thought, nowadays might be seen as one of the precursors of critical thought on the dangers of modern political ideas. The pathologies that Khomiakov attributes to Catholicism and Protestantism--authoritarianism, individualism, and fragmentation--are today the fundamental characteristics of modern states, of the societies in which we live, and to a large extent, of the alternatives that are brought forth in an attempt to counter them. Khomiakov's works therefore might help us take on the challenge of rescuing Christian thought from modern colonization and offer a true alternative, a space for love and truth, the living experience of the church. This book serves as a step on the path toward recovering the church's reflection on its own identity as sobornost', as the community that is the living body of Christ, and can be the next step forward toward recovering the capacity for thought from within the church.""Highly recommended. This volume brings to light the great relevance of Alexei Khomiakov to our postmodern context. We are indebted to the continued and frutiful collaboration of Mrowczy¿ski-Van, Obolevitch, and Rojek.""--Aaron Riches, Benedictine College, Aitchison, KansasArtur Mrowczy¿ski-Van Allen is Professor at the International Center for the Study of the Christian Orient and Instituto de Filosofia ""Edith Stein,"" Granada, Spain. Portraits of Jewish Learning brings together colorful accounts of the ways that Jewish students today are having meaningful learning experiences in day school classrooms, Hebrew programs, synagogue-based schools, and high school and college courses that push students out of their comfort zone. Whether the students are second graders engaged in text analysis, sixth graders solving complex ""mystery puzzles"" about Jewish values, or teens encountering ""counter-narratives"" about Israel's history, these stories--informed by careful and disciplined inquiry--prompt readers to reflect on questions of what Jewish learning is, what we can discover by studying experiences of learning at close range and over time, and how Jewish education can respond to the needs and interests of Jewish learners who seek a Judaism that is relevant in today's world. The work of researchers and practitioners who are changing the landscape of contemporary Jewish education, these portraits are designed to encourage critical discussion among educational leaders, clergy, policymakers, philanthropists, and parents, as well as teachers and those aspiring to work in Jewish education. They invite us to think about the many ways that today's Jewish education can be enriched by experimentation and innovation.""Diane Tickton Schuster has assembled an important-to-read casebook unmasking complexities of twenty-first-century Jewish education in a collection of adeptly rendered contemporary stories of today's myriad forms of Jewish teaching and learning. Each of the portraits provides reflective and analytic insights into diverse settings where engaging Jewish education occurs. Portraiture as a form of study reveals how intentional teaching for meaning, observed self-critically by educators delivering instruction, can lead to profound discovery. You will enjoy--and be edified by--this read.""--Charles ""Chip"" Edelsberg, Leadership Coach and Founding Executive Director, Jim Joseph Foundation""These essays are essential reading for educators and communities of practice who seek to understand how Jewish learning happens and the educational practices that make learning possible. Readers of these portraits will be treated to a sophisticated guided tour of teaching and learning in a wide variety of Jewish settings.""--Miriam Heller Stern, National Director of the School of Education and Associate Professor at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion""Transformational education requires the integration of school experiences with the totality of the Jewish community. Portraits of Jewish Learning provides real and replicable models that bring this concept to life with astonishing results. These models remind us that we must never underestimate the spiritual curiosity and energy of learners of all ages.""--Barry Shrage, Professor of the Practice, Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program, Brandeis University ""Each chapter offers a colorful and textured portrait of powerful, student-centered, Jewish learning. Each can stand alone as an inspiring example of what can be, but the full glory of the volume is in the collection. Feiman-Nemser's final chapter brings the portraits together to draw lessons and raise questions of importance to educators, funders, researchers, clergy, communal leaders, parents, and students. This volume is for anyone who cares about the future of Jewish education.""--Susan M.
