Over the years many books based on the Life of Christ have been published. Of these, some have emphasized the facts of His humanity, others the truth of his Deity. While these volumes, therefore, present the Person of Jesus, this work-by the Prince of Expositors-examines His Life as the accomplishment of a Divine work.With rare insight, accuracy of definition, and countless illuminating strokes, G. Campbell Morgan devotes these thirty-three chapters to the pivotal events in Christ's life. During the last hundred years scholarship has revealed the existence of two other eastern literatures which are not only as old as that of the Hebrews but very much older, namely those of Egypt and Babylonia. . . . Although much of Babylonian literature is know to us mainly from the Assyrian versions found in Assurbanipal's library, recent discoveries have shown that many of its best epic and lyric productions go back at least two thousand years further, and have their roots in the Sumerian civilization. In Egypt, too, religious literature is found in a highly developed state as early as the Pyramid Texts, which, in the form in which we have them, are as old as 2500 B.C., and possibly go back in part to much earlier originals. These discoveries make it no longer possible to regard the literature of the Hebrews as an isolated phenomenon in the ancient East, and they furnish a host of new criteria which must be applied to any attempt to explain and to appraise the Old Testament. --from the Preface
Why are spouse and child abuse so frighteningly common in the church? In this revised and expanded second edition, Spurrell provides detailed notes on the text of Genesis--helpful for both student and scholar. He keys his comments to the grammars of Gesenius, Davidson, Stade, and Olshausen, in addition to Driver's 'Hebrew Tenses' and Davidson's 'Hebrew Syntax'. Throughout the volume the author pays special attention to linguistic forms, syntax, grammar, and geography.Spurrell also provides a detailed introduction in which he summarizes the views of several scholars on the sources of the Pentateuch: their vocabulary, formulas, and grammar. Perhaps no other group of people has been as much formed by biblical texts and tropes as African Americans. From literature and the arts to popular culture and everyday life, the Bible courses through black society and culture like blood through veins. Despite the enormous recent interest in African American religion, relatively little attention has been paid to the diversity of ways in which African Americans have utilized the Bible.African Americans and the Bible is the fruit of a four-year collaborative research project directed by Vincent L. Wimbush and funded by the Lilly Endowment. It brings together scholars and experts (sixty-eight in all) from a wide range of academic and artistic fields and disciplines--including ethnography, cultural history, and biblical studies as well as art, music, film, dance, drama, and literature.The focus is on the interaction between the people known as African Americans and that complex of visions, rhetorics, and ideologies known as the Bible. As such, the book is less about the meaning(s) of the Bible than about the Bible and meaning(s), less about the world(s) of the Bible than about how worlds and the Bible interact--in short, about how a text constructs a people and a people constructs a text. It is about a particular sociocultural formation but also about the dynamics that obtain in the interrelation between any group of people and sacred texts in general. Thus African Americans and the Bible provides an exemplum of sociocultural formation and a critical lens through which the process of sociocultural formation can be viewed.
The following work was written to give in a permanent form some account of the excavations undertaken in 1873 and 1874 on the site of Nineveh; and the principal discoveries which have resulted from these operations. The honour of having started this enterprise belongs to the proprietors of the 'Daily Telegraph' newspaper, and at the close of the first expedition they presented the firman and excavating plant to the trustees of the British Museum to facilitate the renewal of the work. Richard Lischer's book is a stirring affirmation of preaching's importance as a major enterprise in its own right. Walter Bauer's 'Orthodoxy and Heresy in Earliest Christianity' created a stir with its argument that the teachings later condemned as heresy, in the later second century onward, were, in fact, dominant in the earliest decades of the church. This full-scale response by H. E. W. Turner has not enjoyed the attention it deserves. Turner's volume represents a learned and sophisticated restatement of the traditional view: what became official orthodoxy was taught early on by the majority of church teachers, albeit not in fully developed form.
Many books have successfully defended Christianity against Western rational skepticism. 'Apologetics in the New Age' represents the first serious attempt by evangelical philosophers to answer Eastern pantheism in general and the New Age movement in particular. Teaming up with David Clark, Norman Geisler, one of evangelicalism's leading apologists, probes the pantheistic worldview and its relationship to the New Age movement. Pantheism, the authors write, constitutes the soil in which the movement grows. The notion that every person participates in the divine has found fertile expression in contemporary American culture. The American consciousness of the Eastern alternative has risen rapidly in the last few decades, the authors remind us. Christian apologists have been caught unaware.... For this reason, we believe that Christian apologists must turn their attention in a new direction by developing new arguments for this New Age.
Questions and questioning play a major role in both formal and informal educative processes. They are the means by which a child expresses the desire to understand the world outside, and they subsequently become the means by which a teacher assesses whether or not a child has satisfactorily assimilated something. The teacher can also use questions to direct and control the course of students' studies. The ability and desire to question might be considered in itself one of the aims of education. This author has made an extensive study of the place of questioning in education and this book is the fullest record to date of that study. Its scope is comprehensive. It considers questions from the point of view of the one questioning and the one being questioned, and considers pupil and teacher in both of these roles. This work is grounded in theory, research, and practice and is informed by research done in other fields such as psychotherapy, criminal interrogation, and computer science.

Cyril Barber is convinced that the books of Samuel were written not to display the horror of David's sins of murder and adultery, but rather to demonstrate God's faithfulness in raising up prophets, priests, and kings to move history toward the coming of Christ. The central focus of this commentary is to show that the sovereign God weaves His own historical patterns alongside human failure and sin. Some people will read this volume for the exegetical light it sheds on 2 Samuel. Others will seek personal applications and find help in the great lessons that can be learned from the mistakes and successes of the past. All who read it will derive a new appreciation for the work of God in human history. I should warn you that this commentary challenges familiar interpretations and looks at the events of 2 Samuel through a different set of glasses.
