PORTRAIT OF A PRIVATE COP... "Call me Mac... I'm just a guy. I go around and get in jams and then try to figure a way out of them. I don't make very much money and most people insult me one way or another... I'm a fairly good shot with small arms, show-thinking but thorough, and very dirty in a clinch." Mac gets into a jam this time even when he turns a job down. And all because of a book, an ex-gangster's patrician wife, and a red-headed cabaret doll. When all the blood is washed off and the smoke clears away, Mac has a murderer pinned down -- but he doesn't earn much more than a reputation as the most indestrictible man in the business. "Thomas B. Dewey is one of detective fiction's severely underrated writers!" -- Bill Pronzini "Mac has been called one of the most believable and humane PI's in crime fiction. He is reluctant to use either his gun or his fists, but will do so when the situation demands it, or in self-defense; he doesn't merely solve his clients' cases, but provides moral support and sympathy as well; and perhaps most notable of all, Mac feels, and is not afraid to show itópain, loss, sorrow, loneliness." --thrillingdetective.com

  • av Stewart Edward White
    269,-

White's books were popular at a time when America was losing its vanishing wilderness. He was a keen observer of the beauties of nature and human nature, yet could render them in a plain-spoken style. Based on his own experience, whether writing camping journals or Westerns, he included pithy and fun details about cabin-building, canoeing, logging, gold-hunting, and guns and fishing and hunting. He also interviewed people who had been involved in the fur trade, the California Gold Rush and other pioneers which provided him with details that give his novels verisimilitude. He salted in humor and sympathy for colorful characters such as canny Indian guides and "greenhorn" campers who carried too much gear. Theodore Roosevelt wrote that White was "the best man with both pistol and rifle who ever shot" at Roosevelt's rifle range at Sagamore Hill.

  • - An Autobiography
    av Captain Frederick Marryat
    255,-

Valerie was published posthumously in a somewhat incomplete form after its magazine serialization. Valerie has been described as "Japhet in petticoats." Captain Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) was an English Royal Navy officer, novelist, and a contemporary and acquaintance of Charles Dickens, noted today as an early pioneer of the sea story. He is now known particularly for the semi-autobiographical novel Mr. Midshipman Easy and his children's novel The Children of the New Forest, and for a widely used system of maritime flag signaling, known as Marryat's Code.

  • av Biggle, Jr Lloyd & T L Sherred

On screen, the city lay shimmeringly beautiful in the morning sun. For a suspenseful moment we contemplated the confidently proud splendor, the towers and spires reared high, the orderly veins of traffic radiating to the city's horizons, the comic clusters of scurrying transportation microbes, the buildings of all descriptions arranged in a miraculous patchwork mosaic that only high civilization can achieve.Suddenly a grotesquely misplaced sun filled the screen, and the city dissolved in its death glow as the nuclear storm broke over it with the fury of a smashing, incandescent fist. Towers and spires toppled, streets were obliterated, and the writhing landscape vanished in a convulsive eruption of smoke and dust. Then we were shown a close-up view. The revelation that there were people down there came as a shock. Those unfortunate enough to survive the force of the explosion were incinerated in the hideous afterglow of radiation. Even in death and torment, Earth's people looked surprisingly human.I realized with horror that the world on the screen was part of MY history and that I was watching my ancestors die…

  • - Don Quixote, Vol. 1
av Saavedra Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
    285,-

Don Quixote has become so entranced by reading chivalric romances, that he determines to become a knight-errant himself. In the company of his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, his exploits blossom in all sorts of wonderful ways. While Quixote's fancy often leads him astray-he tilts at windmills, imagining them to be giants-Sancho acquires cunning and a certain sagacity. Sane madman and wise fool, they roam the world together, and together they have haunted readers' imaginations for nearly four hundred years.Volume 1 of 4. With an introduction and notes by John Ormsby.
