  • - Lessons from the Origins of the American Republic
    av James D Best
    209

Prior to 1776, world history was primarily written about kings and emperors. The American experiment shook the world. Not only did the colonies break away from the biggest and most powerful empire in history, but they also took the musings of the brightest thinkers of the Enlightenment and implemented them. The founding of the United States was simultaneously an armed rebellion against tyranny and a revolution of ideas -- ideas that changed the course of world history.

"You can talk!" exclaimed Clayton, looking at the new puppy he had picked for his birthday."Of course I can," Max stated, with a hint of wonder in his voice. "Why wouldn't I?" Then the pup informed Clayton, "My name is Max. That's short for Maximum.""Why am I the only one that can hear you?""I guess it's because you have problems with your ears. They don't work right.""How would you know that?" Clayton asked skeptically."I saw it on Animal Planet, 'When Animals Help,' episode twenty-nine, channel two eighteen." Max looked smug, but then admitted sheepishly, "Also, I kinda overheard Mama and Dad talking about it.""Well, I think it's way cool. I have a pet dog that can talk.""Well, I think it's way cool I have a Pet Boy, and I'm going to be your 'hearing ear dog,' just like the ones I saw on TV that help their humans.""You watch a lot of TV, don't you," Clayton said."Yes I do, Pet Boy. You can learn lots of things."As his friendship with his puppy grew, Clayton would learn that Max not only watched a lot of TV, but also believed everything he saw. And at times, he would get both of them into trouble because of it ...

    av Frank Babb
    169

Shortly after the end of the Korean War, Missouri farm boy Frank Blake is drafted and posted to the Army Counterintelligence School. He expects to go to Korea with the rest of his classmates, but because his high school girlfriend convinced him to take a Spanish class with her instead of French, he's sent to Panamá, assigned to a CIC unit that engages in clandestine operations. At a party he meets Julia, an attractive young woman he thinks works for the Embassy. When Frank's team is assigned an operation that depends on her, his war gets personal and dirty. After their mission, however, she vanishes. Frank longs to see Julia again, but he won't discover why she disappeared until he receives a letter from her almost forty-five years later. Interwoven with this mystery are the stories of the civilian soldiers who temporarily serve as secret agents in the backwaters of Central America, where outside the glare of public attention, Cold War tensions lead to deadly consequences.

I lived with my parents and my brother in southern France under the German occupation from 1940 to 1944. We did not practice any religion, but we were Jews according to Hitler because of our ancestry. And since we had "Jewish blood" we were destined to perish. My direct family survived, which is attributed to them refusing to have anything to do with "racial" laws. However, I lost two uncles, two aunts, and two cousins in death camps. In March 1944, my brother and I, seventeen and eighteen years old, respectively, escaped from France through the Pyrenees, surrendered to the Spanish police, and were jailed for a week in Spain. We gained our freedom by being exchanged for two hundred pounds, each, of American wheat. We joined the Allied forces in North Africa and eight months later we landed in America to be trained as Air Force personnel. When the war was over, I came back to France and headed the family flower farm. I found that the methods for raising flowers were medieval and I decided to go back to the U.S. to learn more modern techniques. I landed in New York City on my way to San Luis Obispo, California, where I became a student in horticulture -- although my degrees are in botany and plant pathology. I taught, as a university professor, in genetics, and I have always considered myself a geneticist.I never forgot my experience in France as a teenager, and I never accepted the idea that I was considered a Jew because my ancestors were. My knowledge of genetics gave me a categorical answer to the eternal question of "Who is a Jew?" The answer is: Someone who follows the rites of Judaism. Jews belong to a religious federation -- no matter how loose it is. It is their religion that separates them from the world, not something biological such as genes.

  • - Memories of Peace Corps Service in Mali
    av Renate a Schulz
    269,-

Retired university professor Renate Schulz is looking for something to do with her life, some way to give back. She decides to rejoin the Peace Corps forty-six years after she first served.Life in Alien Territory: Memories of Peace Corps Service in Mali chronicles her eleven months in Mali, West Africa, a predominantly Muslim country. At age seventy-one, she is the oldest Peace Corps volunteer among 180 other Americans.Schulz weaves the highs and lows of her life as a volunteer in Africa into her daily journal entries. Her personal struggles with the challenges of living in third-world conditions, particularly at her age, are woven into her real-life concerns about human rights in West Africa, particularly for women and children. Her time in Mali, with all its challenges and frustrations, are offset with her growing appreciation for this "alien" culture. In this wonderfully readable travel narrative, Schulz captures the spirit of the culture, education, and people of Mali. At the same time, she shows how you are never too old to have a life-changing adventure.

  • - A Simple System for Improving Your Bowling Scores
av Mark (University of Manchester UK) Baker
    355,-

Over the last several decades, one of the most frustrating problems facing bowlers who are looking to get better at the sport has been the lack of a simple, universally accepted system that works for everyone.Enter Mark Baker and his revolutionary approach to coaching -- an approach that has made him the most sought-after bowling coach in the world. In this book, Baker reveals entirely new and simple ways to illustrate the kinds of things that can immediately improve a bowler's scores without completely reinventing the bowler's own unique style.Using empirical evidence illustrated by common traits that the vast majority of Hall-of-Fame-caliber bowlers possess, Baker convincingly (and humorously) explains what it takes to improve your bowling scores by making small, easy-to-adopt changes within the structure of your own, natural game. The Game Changer truly is a game changer when it comes to the way bowlers and bowling coaches will approach bowling improvement for the foreseeable future.
