This volume is critical to the two dominant historiographical narrations on the topic of Balkan revolutions. Instead of adopting a description of the national movements as results of the dissolution of the territories of the Great Ottoman patient from the Great European Powers or an autonomous process of repetitive awakenings of sleeping Nations, drugged from the Oriental influence of their ruler, the author attempts a classification as well as a new description of the Balkan national movements as a continuous feedback with the internal sociopolitical schisms in Western Europe, as expressed in the Great revolutionary crises from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century.

The focal point of this volume brings together case studies carried out by acclaimed experts on a subject little known in Germany - 20th century British realism. This collection examines exemplary oeuvres of individual artists, artistic tendencies, subjects as well as exhibition practices. The essays discuss continuity and change in Bilad al Sham (Greater Syria) during the sixteenth century, examining to what extent Egypt and Greater Syria were affected by the transition from Mamluk to Ottoman rule. This is explored in a variety of areas: diplomatic relations, histories and historiography, fiscal and agricultural administration, symbolic orders, urban developments, local perspectives and material culture. In order to rethink the sixteenth century from a transitional perspective and thus overcome the conventional dynasty-centered fields of research Mamlukists and Ottomanists have been brought together, shedding light on the remarkable sixteenth century, so decisive for the formation of early modern Muslim empires.

The contributions investigate the ways in which numerous institutions of English literature shape the literary field. While they cover an extensive historical field, ranging from the Early Modern period to the 18th century to the contemporary, they focus not only on literary texts, but also on extra-literary ones, including literary prizes, literary histories and anthologies, and highlight the various ways in which these negotiate the processes that constitute the literary field. All contributions assert that there is no such thing as literature outside of institutions. Great emphasis is therefore put on different acts of mediation.

Argumentation is one of the cultural key techniques, required to take part in public discourse. This study examined if and how upper secondary school students are able to argue in writing regarding the subject creation and evolution. In cooperation with the Department of Biology Education (IPN Kiel and University of Potsdam) students arguments were levied empitically and identified with quality content analysis. English summary: Religion is beyond doubt inseparably connected with questions about holy locations and places. These places gain their meaning not by their physical determination, but by human construction. The contributions of this volume try to shape this phenomenon for selected texts of the Old and New Testament and of Philo of Alexandria. In doing so, they inevitably shed light on central theological issues of these texts. Geographically speaking the Arabaic Peninsula and the Greek Isles, but also Mesopotamia are brought in as outmost areas, which contain Jerusalem in the middle, but could also contain places such as a mountain, temple, or even a bed of a praying man. German description: Religion ist untrennbar mit der Frage nach heiligen Statten und religiosen Raumen verbunden. Dabei gewinnen diese Orte ihre Bedeutung weniger aus bestimmten physischen Gegebenheiten als durch sprachliche und gesellschaftliche Konstruktion. In his testimony on his survival in Auschwitz, Primo Levi said "our language lacks words to express this offense, the demolition of a man." If language, if any language, lacks the words to express the experience of the concentration camps, how does one write the unspeakable? How can it then be translated? The limits of representation and translation seem to be closely linked when it comes to writing about the Holocaust--whether as fiction, memoir, testimony--a phenomenon the current study examines. While there is a spate of literature about the impossibility to represent the Holocaust, not much has been written on the links between translation in its specific linguistic sense, translation studies, and the Holocaust, a niche this volume aims to fill.

Handelt es sich hierbei um eine ausfuhrliche Erzahlung, so war vor allem das Genre des Aphorismus als eine literarische Technik zur Verbreitung medizinischen Wissens von Bedeutung, angefangen beim Corpus Hippocraticum bis zu den Aphorismi de cognoscendis et curandis morbis (1715) von Herman Boerhaave.Gleichzeitig wurde das Thema Krankheit und ihr Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Menschheit von einer grossen Zahl poetischer Gelehrter und gelehrter Poeten untersucht.Der Sammelband vereinigt vierzehn Artikel, die sich mit dem Verhaltnis von Krankheit und Literatur beschaftigen. Er bietet erstmals eine Ubersicht der niederlandischsprachigen Forschung zu diesem Thema, wobei die literarischen und kulturellen Funktionen medizinischen Wissens und die Poetik medizinischen wie literarischen Schreibens im Mittelpunkt stehen.

The Bruno Cassirer publishing-house has a moving publishing history, due the emigration of the Cassirer family to London in 1938. Despite the adverse conditions resulting from its change of location, the publishing-house is renowned for its high standards of publication. This bibliography deals with the publishing-house from its first publication at its re-establishment to the closing-down of the family business in 1990. Landmarks in the history of the publishers are covered in two languages with several contributions by experts from England and Germany. This volume contains for the first time a fully-illustrated colour bibliography as well as bilingual contributions to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Bruno Cassirer publishers. Negation is a universal feature of human language that is inherently logical in nature, presents typologically diverse manifestations, and plays a fundamental role in the mapping between syntactic structure and semantic interpretation. The aim of this volume is to complement the vast body of research literature by offering a set of cutting-edge studies on negation. All the contributions are related to recent questions bearing on the syntax and semantics of negative elements and the variation in their form, and follow the central assumption that a proper understanding of the multifaceted expression of negation is central to our understanding of the grammar as a whole. With this in mind, different approaches and a variety of empirical and analytic details have been included in this volume. Negation ist eine universelle Eigenschaft der menschlichen Sprache. English summary: Located on the seam of Diaspora and Israeli Literature, Anglophone Israeli Literature comprises a loose community of 100-500 authors and has co-existed with the Hebrew writing tradition in Israel since the 1970s. Consisting mainly of immigrants from Anglophone countries, Anglophone Israeli Literature is characterized by a search for personal and poetic identity in a highly transcultural environment, challenging settled identities and opting instead for flexibility, flux and inclusion. The present volume considers Anglophone Israeli Literature as a phenomenon in its critical, social and historical aspects on the one hand and explores the specific mechanisms of constructing and representing poetic identity on the other hand. Focusing on the works by and interviews with some of the core representatives of Anglophone Israeli Literature - Shirley Kaufman, Rachel Tzvia Back, Karen Alkalay-Gut, Lami, Richard Sherwin, Jerome Mandel, Riva Rubin and Rochelle Mass - the book analyzes three pivotal elements of identity: language, geography and place, and political and emotional self-positioning towards the Other. This book focuses on the Mansuriyya regiment, the mamluks of sultan al-Mansur Qalawun. It traces the lives of these mamluks during the career of their master Qalawun (ca. 1260-1290), the period they ruled the Sultanate of Egypt and Syria de jure or de facto (1290-1310), and their aftermath, during the third reign of sultan al-Nasir Muhammad b. Qalawun (1310-1341). Based on dozens of contemporary Arabic sources, the book traces the political and military events of the turbulent Mansuriyya period, as well as the basic military-political principles and socio-political practices that evolved during this period. It suggests that the Mansuriyya period marks the beginning of the demilitarization, or politicization, of the Mamluk sultanate.

Inventories are among the oldest documents to survive from ancient times. Textiles take an important place within them and inform - among other things - about value, context of use, material, fashion, trade or techniques. This is all the more relevant, as textiles were then the most important trade goods after bullion and food. The articles of this volume focus on the time between the High Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. They represent different approaches to this fascinating topic whose social framework includes popes, kings, merchants and farmers.

The mood of systemic crisis that has marked the early 21st century has been accompanied by an upsurge in Marxist thought in a whole range of domains and extends to art history. In this volume 19 scholars from different generations, different national contexts and with different relationships to Marxism reflect on the status of 18 keywords with special pertinence to Marxist art-historical inquiry today. Starting point of the researches was the knowledge that while certain keywords have been crucial to recent developments in Marxist art history and cultural theory more broadly, others seem to have slipped out of view. The scholars are not so much interested in the historical semantics of words although that plays some role in the essays as in the present state of Marxist art history.

Fear in its many facets appears to constitute an intriguing and compelling subject matter for writers and screenwriters alike. The contributions address fictional representations and explorations of fear in different genres and different periods of literary and cultural history. The topics include representations of political violence and political fear in English Renaissance culture and literature; dramatic representations of fear and anxiety in English Romanticism; the dramatic monologue as an expression of fears in Victorian society; cultural constructions of fear and empathy in George Eliot's Daniel Deronda (1876) and Jonathan Nasaw's Fear Itself (2003); facets of children's fears in twentieth- and twenty-first-century stream-of-consciousness fiction; the representation of fear in war movies; the cultural function of horror film remakes; the expulsion of fear in Kazuo Ishiguro's novel Never Let Me Go and fear and nostalgia in Mohsin Hamid's post-9/11 novel The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

The history of decolonization is usually written backward, as if the end-point (a world of juridically equivalent nation-states) was known from the start and the only question was the obstacles to be overcome in order to get there. But if we ask how leaders in France, Britain, and their African colonies saw the political possibilities at the end of World War II, the routes out of colonial empire appear more varied. Some Africans sought equal rights within empire, others to federate among themselves; some sought independence. In London or Paris, officials realized they had to reform colonial empires, but not necessarily give them up. The idea of odevelopmento became a way to assert that empire could be made both more productive and more legitimate. Frederick Cooper explores how these alternative possibilities narrowed between 1945 and approximately 1960. The idea that polities were composite gave way to the fiction of a world of juridically equivalent nation-states. Some African leaders predicted that a world so divided might perpetuate rather than eliminate the powerlessness and poverty against which they were mobilizing.

This volume addresses textbooks written in the Albanian language and in use in Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia. Political myths and mythical spaces play a key role in shaping processes of identity-building, concepts of 'self' and 'other', and ideas pertaining to the location of the self and nation within a post-conflict context. The Albanian case is particularly interesting because the majority of Albanians live outside the borders of Albania, despite the existence of the nation-state, which gives rise to fascinating complexities regarding the shaping of national identities and myths surrounding concepts of 'self' and 'other'. What textbooks teach is always of political interest, as they represent society's intentions for its next generation. This renders identity-building processes via textbooks in this context a particularly fascinating topic for research, here examined through the lens of myths and mythical spaces.

Why do successors decide to join the family business? The current study investigated the hitherto largely ignored perspective of the successor on succession as career decision process. Grounded on family business and career development theory, insights gained from the qualitative analysis of 16 in-depth interviews with successors were used to develop a successor profiling tool. It is composed of three main elements: the succession decision as process, influences of facilitating and inhibiting factors as well as underlying successor commitment over time. A gender sensitive perspective was adopted in order to account for gender differences during tool development. The tool developed offers a practical contribution by helping young family business members to consider succession in relation to their career development.

Neoplatonic Romanticism had a dark underside from its inception: Romantic Disillusionism, encompassing the Gothic and the new demonic doppelganger. The Classical Tradition's conflict between Plato and Pyrrho, foundationalism and scepticism, optimism and pessimism was thus continued. Lord Byron's was the most listened-to and echoed voice of Romantic Disillusionism in Europe, though by far not the only one. This comparative study of a multiplicity of sceptical English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Polish, and Czech voices shows how traditional Pyrrhonic arguments were updated to suit the decades of the Romantic Movement, surviving as a subversive countercurrent to later Victorianism and resurging in the literature of the Decadence and Fin de Siecle.

This book provides a theoretical introduction to the task-based methodology in language and literature teaching. For teachers the main points of interest are Part Two and Three, where a plethora of contemporary texts both from Britain and the US are given a literary analysis which is followed by detailed task-based lesson plans. Part Two focuses on multiculturalism, one of the seminal issues of our time, Part Three tackles gender, another highly topical theme which students are naturally interested in. Well-known authors like the British-Asian writer Hanif Kureish and the Indian-American novelist Jhumpa Lahiri feature in the chapter on multiculturalism; the gender question is represented by Carol Ann Duffy, the current Poet Laureate and Caryl Churchill, the main representative of feminist drama.

The vast majority of national law expositions of the rules for determining when something is a part of land, and therefore partakes in its legal nature, or leads a separate existence in the other category of corporeal property, goods, leaves a distinct impression of a naturalistic approach to the categorisation of property. The view advocated in this study is that the accession or severance of things to and from land as a 'natural scientific enquiry' based exclusively on blends of physical attachment to or socially-expressed intention in respect of land is misleading, or, at least, not decisive. National law accounts of the rules governing the distinction of land and goods need recalibrating to take account of the purpose, or the legal reason, why land is being distinguished from goods in a particular situation. This is well illustrated by the straightforward example of standing timber, variously described doctrinally and in the case-law as integral parts of land, (presently-existing or future) goods, or even the object of 'flying freeholds'. Purpose of classification reveals the many nuances of competing policy considerations and, in turn, better reflects the law as it stands.

Entrepreneurial families experience partially severe conflicts among family members, often in connection with the role of the business in family communication. These conflicts threaten the continuation of the family business and peaceful family life. But, business families do not exist without context. They have a history and a cultural environment--both are influencing conflicts and conflict-management methods. In the present study, conflicts in Indian and German owning families are compared, always with a focus on distinctive historical and cultural developments. The direct comparison of these historically seen very different family systems offers owning families in both countries connecting factors to reflect upon known and possible new conflict management methods.
