Childhood in neo-Victorian fiction for both child and adult readers is an extremely multifaceted and fascinating field. This book argues that neo-Victorian fiction projects multiple, competing visions of childhood and suggests that they can be analysed by means of a typology, the 'childhood scale', which provides different categories along the lines of power relations, and literary possible-worlds theory. The usefulness of both is exemplified by detailed discussions of Philippa Pearce's "Tom's Midnight Garden" (1958), Eva Ibbotson's "Journey to the River Sea" (2001), Sarah Waters' "Fingersmith" (2002) and Dianne Setterfield's "The Thirteenth Tale" (2006).

This volume pays homage to Monika Seidl, a key figure of cultural studies at the University of Vienna's Department of English and American Studies and spotlights her many achievements in the field. Edyta Wieclawska presents the structural and functional aspects of binomials in English/Polish company registration discourse. She analyses and discusses frequency data from the sociolinguistic perspective. Her work contributes original and innovative research shedding new light on the perennial issue of legal formulacity as evidenced through binomial expressions. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the volume fits within the research domains of linguistics and law (jurlinguistics, legal linguistics), translation studies and commercial law.

This monograph presents issues related to the armed conflict in Ukraine, which began in 2014 and is still ongoing. It shows the socio-historical background of warfare; the factors determining the distribution of adaptive resources (assigning them meaning, as well as experienced gains and losses of a subjective, state, material and energy nature). It also portrays the relationships between the distribution of adaptive resources and: 1) active, emotional and avoidant strategies for coping with war stress; 2) multidimensional consequences of long-term participation in war circumstances - including use of psychoactive substances, somatic disorders, mental difficulties, symptoms of depression, PTSD syndrome, post-traumatic growth.

This special issue of the Journal "zeitgeschichte" presents the results of the doctoral theses written within the framework of the Doctoral College European Historical Dictatorship and Transformation Research (2009-2012) as selected scholarly essays. Mid-nineteenth century America was filled with charismatic leaders and visionaries who produced new sacred writing. This book traces the stories of Mormon founder Joseph Smith Jr., Methodist revivalist Phoebe Palmer and Transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson and their new text productions to investigate a diverse community that grappled with a perceived loss of religious authority. It attempts to collect a shared set of motifs and practices that these modern prophets employed to establish new carriers of religious authority. Claudia Jetter thereby discusses "legitimate religious authority" and the dynamic ascription processes between a charismatic leader and an interactive, supportive social community in the actual historical context of nineteenth-century America.

The book explores the significance of literary translation and interpretation, in the widest sense of terms, as multiple processes of meaning and cultural transfer, by investigating how and why literature can be considered as a repository and a disseminator of knowledge and values. Featuring essays by a number of scholars focusing on a wide range of literary and critical texts of different nations and cultures and encompassing the last three centuries, this book intends to offer a contribution to the study of translation and interpretation as literary processes of cultural and epistemic dissemination of knowledge from both a theoretical and a practical perspective.

Mobility and migration were not uncommon in Byzantium, as is true for all societies. Yet, scholarship is only beginning to pay attention to these phenomena. This book presents in English translation a wide array of relevant source texts from ca. 650 to ca. 1450 originally written in medieval Greek: from administrative records, saints' lives and letters by churchmen to ego-documents by ambassadors and historical narratives by court historians. Each source text is accompanied by a detailed introduction, commentary and further bibliography, thus making the book accessible to both scholars and students and laying the groundwork for future research on the internal dynamics of Byzantine society.

Trotz einer Vielzahl von Denkmälern, Straßennamen und Plätzen, die in Deutschland und Frankreich bis heute auf den Krieg hinweisen, ist die kollektive Erinnerung daran stark verblasst. Dieser Band versammelt Beiträge aus transnationaler, regionaler und interdisziplinärer Perspektive und sucht nach neuen makro- und mikrohistorischen Zugängen. In fünf Sektionen werden zunächst politik-, militär- und mentalitätsgeschichtliche Annäherungen unternommen. Aus einer intellektuellen- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Sicht wird etwa die Rolle der Medizin behandelt. Auf die Beiträge zur Kriegsberichterstattung, Publizistik und den neuen Techniken der Fotografie folgen kunst- und musikwissenschaftliche Studien zur ästhetischen und kulturellen Aneignung des Krieges. This collection includes essays on the Franco-German War from a transnational, regional and interdisciplinary perspective and searches for new macro- and micro-historical access to this incisive event in European history. The five sections firstly contain approaches from the history of politics and mentalities as well as military studies. From the viewpoint of intellectual history and science studies the role of medicine is discussed among others. The articles on war reporting, journalism and the new techniques of photography are followed by studies from the fine arts and musicology that deal with aesthetic and cultural treatments of the war. The last section finally reconstructs the national and local memory discourse of both countries until the 20th century.

The authors propose a holistic look at the problem of population ageing and global and regional effort to improve the quality of seniors' life and their families through the integration of healthcare, social care, and senior-friendly environment. They also concentrate on the senior policy of the European Union and the concept of care farming against the backdrop of social farming. Finally, they present the results of the two largest studies under the GROWID project. They investigated older people's needs against the background of the social services provided by care farms.

The only Arabic voice to have witnessed the Ottoman conquest of Cairo, Ibn Iyas is an eminent historical source for the late Mamluk period. This book is the first to take stock of the author's complete works, approaching him through an examination of his narrative voice and writing strategies. Tracing Ibn Iyas's working process by compilation analysis, it shows how the author adapted his representations of Egyptian history to his writing projects and audience. Ibn Iyas's ways of worldmaking are shaped deeply by beliefs, biases and intellectual trends as well as the impact of the social and historical context the author wrote in. Knowing these conditioning factors allows to understand his presentation of history as an individual voice of his time.

The last kings of Juda led God's people directly into exile and thus in the catastrophe of the destruction of the First temple. How did that happen? Who was responsible? What kind of role did God play in this drama? These questions will be addressed by Benedikt Collinet. Unlike the narrative suggests, the kings were not the protagonists of the drama but the antagonists to God instead. God used the neighbouring peoples and Babel as tools of punishment. The reason for these punishments was the systemic covenant break of God's people. The consequences of these punishments can be read in Deuteronomy 28. The story is a composed deconstruction of divine salvation promises. The salvation gifts were withdrawn but the promises still remained. The people needed a new beginning that with reference to the exodus could only be indicated or prepared by pardoning Jehoiachin (2 Kings 25:27-30).

When people of different cultures and religious traditions are being constantly drawn closer together, interreligious dialogue becomes not only a strategy to understand the "Others," but also an attitude to deepen one's faith. Christian faith acknowledges other religious traditions as genuine "ways" and "channels" of salvation for their adherents and that religions have a place in God's universal plan of salvation for humankind. The plausibility of this assertion can be exemplified by the concept of "inclusive pluralism," a theological model developed by the Belgian-born Jesuit theologian Jacques Dupuis. This book expounds that concept and reflects on its implication for the Catholic Church's unwavering commitment to interreligious dialogue.

This book studies the impact of mobility on the lives of people who moved between the Ottoman Empire, Eastern Europe, and Iran from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century, through the lens of their biographies. Depending on who moved where and their circumstances, mobility could mean brutal uprooting or homecoming; a loss of freedom or the opening of new opportunities; marginalization or a path to wealth and power. Beyond the individual level, Transottoman biographies inform us about the local societies that both shaped and were shaped by mobile people. Mobile biographies show the entanglements between different regions and empires and make comprehensible what this specifically meant for the people on the ground.

This trilingual volume sets out to address the forms of otherness and types of the Other through the example of case studies of European literatures and to look at them from an intercultural perspective. The concept of the Other not only varied from epoch to epoch, but it was tied to the development of the respective culture. Reflection on identity and otherness forms the core of the contributions collected in this volume, which focus on texts, authors or myths from French, German, English, Polish, Russian and Swedish literature from the 16th century until today. The selection of texts is intended to demonstrate the complexity and originality of the theme of otherness versus identity in contemporary literary research and to point to ist topicality. The volume sees itself as the result of comparative studies in which literary researchers discuss selected aspects of identityforming otherness, especially on a narrative level.

In his lifetime Erich Maria Remarque was one of the most popular authors in Germany. Yet, how significant are his works internationally 50 years after his death? How are his works and positions discussed today and which goals are connected with his works throughout different media? The contributions in this volume highlight these questions from a historical, literary and cultural perspective. They draw conclusions of the reception in selected countries and cultures and describe the changes the author and Remarque's works underwent worldwide in the eyes of his readers in the past decades. Here, not only the literary reception is being focused on but also the artistic debate with Remarque in film, theatre, visual art and graphic novels.

This book examines how the intensive discussions about the issue of juvenile delinquency in the new international organizations (United Nations, World Health Organization, Council of Europe), which emerged after the end of the Second World War, internationalized the anxieties generated in the fifties and sixties by its purported increase in Europe and beyond. Greece, a regular member-state, anxious to ensure international legitimacy in the aftermath of the Civil War, presented abroad an embellished picture of the measures undertaken at home for the prevention and containment of juvenile delinquency, sidestepping the strong moralism and the juridical formalism that dominated both official and unofficial approaches.

"Romantik. Journal for the Study of Romanticisms" is a multidisciplinary journal dedicated to the study of romantic-era cultural productions and concepts. The journal promotes innovative research across disciplinary borders. It aims to advance new historical discoveries, forward-looking theoretical insights and cutting-edge methodological approaches. The articles range over the full variety of cultural practices, including the written word, visual arts, history, philosophy, religion, and theatre during the romantic period (c. 1780-1840). But contributions to the discussion of pre- or post-romantic representations are also welcome. Since the romantic era was characterized by an emphasis on the vernacular, the title of journal has been chosen to reflect the Germanic root of the word. But the journal is interested in all European romanticisms - and not least the connections and disconnections between them - hence, the use of the plural in the subtitle. Romantik is a peer-reviewed journal supported by the Nordic Board for Periodicals in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOP-HS).

The Mamluk Sultanate represents an extremely interesting case study to examine social, economic and cultural developments in the transition into the rapidly changing modern world. On the one hand, it is the heir of a political and military tradition that goes back hundreds of years, and brought this to a high pitch that enabled astounding victories over serious external threats. On the other hand, as time went on, it was increasingly confronted with "modern" problems that would necessitate fundamental changes in its structure and content. The Mamluk period was one of great religious and social change, and in many ways the modern demographic map was established at this time. This volume shows that the situation of the Mamluk Sultanate was far from that of decadence, and until the end it was a vibrant society (although not without tensions and increasing problems) that did its best to adapt and compete in a rapidly changing world.
