  • - A Source Book, Part A
    av Jacob Neusner
    919

The Rabbis of classical Judaism, in the first six centuries of the Common Era, commented on the teachings of ancient Israel's prophets and shaped, as much as they were shaped by, prophecy. They commented on much of the Scriptural heritage and they made it their own. This collection of the Rabbinic comments on biblical books makes easily accessible the Rabbinic reading of the prophetic heritage and opens the way to the study of how normative Judaism responded to the challenge of the prophetic writings.

  • - What is the Spirit Saying to the Church of the Twenty-first Century?
    av Michael J. Tkacik
    565

This work confronts the Catholic Church's need to be ecumenically sensitive and open to acculturation. The primary argument is that the Holy Spirit perennially illuminates reforms that give life to the Church, such as affirming the baptismal dignity of the laity and affording the laity their rightful voice in the Church's decision-making processes. Tkacik's and McGonigle's visions regarding the future of the Catholic Church require that the ministerial and hierarchical leaders, as well as laity, embrace new models of leadership and shared governance within the Church and with other Christian Traditions. This work's devotion to passionate calls for reforms are offered within the light of the Catholic Church's past and are an inspiring challenge to the Church to empty herself of mentalities, customs and practices that no longer give life to the faithful.

  • - The Human and Social Dynamics of Organizational Change
    av Janet Cooper Jackson
    619

This work addresses the human and social dynamics of change on organization members. The effects of such changes ultimately influence the success or failure of the organization's change initiatives. Rather than focus on the "process" or "technology" of change, as many previous works have done, the premise of this work is to address the human dynamics that are crucial for any change initiative to be effective. In essence, Jackson emphasizes that people do indeed come first for any plan involving organizational change.Other important factors addressed in Organizational Development include: considering the entire organization and understanding that each change affects the entity as a whole; recognizing organizational learning as a key to inspiring members to learn together; and the development of a cadre of leaders who are willing to take the organization forward as opposed to solitary leadership. This work is ideal for students or practitioners of Organization Development (OD), and provides methods and practices that focus on improving the effectiveness of organizations.

  • - Using Quantifiable Measures to Explore Leadership in the American System
    av Carl D. Cavalli
    519

Presidential Legislative Activity explores the presidency and develops a typology that examines presidential activities. Author Carl D. Cavalli uses samples from the Eisenhower, Johnson, and Nixon administrations to explore questions about presidential behavior. The data confirms much of the heretofore descriptive and anecdotal evidence on such things as levels of presidential activity and travel, but dispute the popular conception of presidents being legislators. One advantage to this approach is the ability to explore commonalities across presidencies, instead of uniquely labeling each administration. Another advantage is the ability to empirically explore the president's relationship with Congress. A regression analysis of activity determines that contact with individual members of Congress is driven by their status within the hierarchy and secondarily by partisan concerns. Finally, there is also some evidence that contact with Congress varies directly with a president's legislative success.
