"The furthest I'd ever cycled in a day was thirty miles; a one off. And I had no experience of camping or cycle maintenance. But all I could envisage was some romantic notion about becoming a cycling nomad: travelling wherever my heart desired, camping in the great outdoors, visiting beautiful and historic places, and searching for a place to call home. The universe though had other ideas."An honest and detailed account by a first-time cycle tourist, riding from Lands' End to John O' Groats.Travel with Dawn as she describes the challenges of bicycle travel, bringing her journey to life from moments most magical, to most miserable: from deluge to heatwave, bustling cities to remote landscapes, friendly welcomes to threats of violence, Dawn experiences it all, transforming her from a woefully unprepared novice, attempting a one-off challenge, and into a life-long advocate of bicycle travel. For aspiring cycle tourists and armchair travellers alike, read a travelogue of a journey through Britain, told from the unique perspective of a young woman on a bicycle, who decides to go it alone.

The mountains and waters of Ivundé, in the Indian Ocean, contain something of immense value. To gain control of the Island, a shadowy Middle East group uses the cover of a madrassas-building project to arrange what at first sight is a local extremist takeover. The UK/US, with the help of local sources, and a retired academic and a professional intelligence officer - who discover the truth - use their Special Forces, re-gain control of the Island. This is a story of deception. Power deceives as it manipulates reality. Those who wield it - the diplomats and politicians - can only behave as their experience and allegiances allow them to, and the Island looks certain to be dragged from its idyllic existence, where time is of little essence, into a hectic Nauruesque future. Some of those who live on the Island will see only clouds, others, silver linings. They include: Rosalie, a smart, if unsophisticated semi-local, and her US cowboy husband; 'free-thinkers', Valli and Meera, who, with their 'daughters', dispense wisdom and Darjeeling from their Emporium in the town; and Madame Lemesurier, owner of the Mirabile, who seeks guidance from her husband, at rest under a marble slab below a baobab in the Hotel gardens. At the centre of the conspiracy, and under the control of the shadowy Middle East group, is a Chinese scientist. From enforced exile in North Korea, he has been 'lent' to the group and compelled to carry out 'disturbing' research from his prison on a madrassa site. The wild landscape of the Island, its madrassas' construction sites and its hotel, the run-down Mirabilé, provide much of the setting for the story, though the exercise of deception also pushes the action from place-to-place: a faceless office in London, GCHQ, the military bases of Djibouti and Diego Garcia, and the Presidential Palace in the mainland capital.

This book looks at the deficiencies, biases and potential improvement to pedestrians' safety and convenience. It examines more closely person crossing needs, tasks and abilities, including those for disabled people. The inconsistencies and biases of our Highway Code, lessons and shortcomings of reporting and accident investigation, as well as approaches to speed and alcohol problems and societal attitudes evidenced by court rulings are all the covered. Vehicle-related technology examined includes the 'black box' in motor vehicles, available automated pedestrians detection and avoidance, the potential for so-called 'driverless' cars, and 'forgiving' vehicle design. In addition, the chapters on improvements focus on potentially significant numerical reductions in pedestrian casualties - to get an idea of what could reasonably be achievable. The book aims to inform readers having minimal technical background while providing references for people more numerically adept. Its intent is to stimulate thought and discussion among planners, engineers, elected officials and, most of all, among people who petition their local councillors, MPs and others who can enact legislation to reduce the casualties among pedestrians.

"An academic career was in front of me, but I sampled the oil and gas industry and stayed. Thirty years later I became CEO of an international company based in Greece."Michael Earle's story is full of exploration and adventure from beginning to end. He witnessed the aftermath of the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and felt the threat of nuclear war between Pakistan and India; in the Sahara Desert he crossed a minefield in the war zone between Libya and Chad, and he was attacked by gigantic hornets in the spectacular mountains of Papua New Guinea - all in the line of duty. Extensive international travel came with the territory, and the narrative contains interesting portraits of many countries, and insights into the pros and cons of expatriate life. Finally, I am CEO recounts the hard lessons learned at each stage of a tortuous path through corporate life, and how passion for work and the need to support a family strained marriages and determined career choices.

From antiquity to the modern era, anti-Semitism has reared its head despite changing times, locations, language and circumstances. For each outburst a reason has been given: religious, economic, social. Yet, anti-Semitism has remained consistent. Does this indicate that a profound cause must exist? The book examines this viewpoint.
