¿By means of multidisciplinary research on urban and rural planning, construction engineering, environmental engineering and engineering sociology, this book conducts pioneering research on the construction theory, construction methods, evaluation technology and application of demonstration projects in Chinäs green villages and towns. The book is divided into three parts and eleven chapters. Part I is about the theory and development of green village and town construction, including the theory and innovation, the evolution and development, the patterns and mechanisms, and the community of green village and town construction. Part II is about the planning and construction methods of green villages and towns, including the plan compilation, the environmental infrastructure construction, and the construction and renovation of green buildings in villages and towns. Part III is about the evaluation of the planning and construction of green villages and towns, including the evaluation of plans, the evaluation of environmental infrastructure construction, the evaluation of green building construction, and the comprehensive evaluation of the planning and construction of green villages and towns. Today, 564 million farmers live in 28,500 towns and 2.452 million villages in China. In 2018 alone, 820 million m2 of new houses were built in rural areas. This proves that Chinäs green village and town construction has great significance and can provide enlightenment to developing countries and even to the world. The book describes new theories, new perspectives and new methods of green village and town sustainable construction in China for overseas experts and readers.

This open access book offers unique in-depth, comprehensive, and comparative analyses of the motivations, context, and outcomes of recent land reforms in Africa. Whereas a considerable number of land reforms have been carried out by African governments since the 1990s, no systematic analysis on their meaning has so far been conducted. In the age of land reform, Africa has seen drastic rural changes. Analysing the relationship between those reforms and change, the chapters in this book reveal not only their socio-economic outcomes, such as accelerated marketisation of land, but also their political outcomes, which have often been contrasting. Countries such as Rwanda and Mozambique have utilised land reform to strengthen state control over land, but other countries, such as Ghana and Zambia, have seen the rise in power of traditional chiefs in managing the land. The comparative perspective of this book clarifies new features of African social changes, which are carefully investigated by area experts. This book examines the relationship between retirement and health of older people in Japan¿s super-aging society and provides a key to understanding the remarkable longevity of the population. It also furnishes new evidence in this research field where the findings have been conflicting and the detailed causal mechanism has not been clarified for many years. For that purpose, a large-scale survey was used, ¿The Longitudinal Survey of Middle-Aged and Elderly Persons,¿ which was conducted in Japan from 2005 to 2015 with 34,240 respondents aged 50¿59 years in the first sample. Using this longitudinal survey, which focused on people just before retirement, and rigorous causal inference including instrumental variable and panel estimation, several research questions were tested.Specifically, existing literature does not provide sufficient findings about the heterogeneity in the effect of retirement on health. Thus, we have questions which should be addressed:does retirement affect health immediately or with delay; does the lifestyle before retirement matter for post-retirement health; and which is better for health retiring early or late? The lack of this viewpoint is believed to have led to the conflicting previous findings. If we know the answers to the questions, we would be able to understand the mechanisms between retirement and health, and prepare more properly for better retirement life.Showing the results of the testing of these questions, this book provides readers, researchers, and policymakers a comprehensive understanding of the retirement¿health relationship and a suggestion for an effective labor and health policy in an aging society.

This book delves into the climate surrounding the economic development of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, with a spotlight on Qatar given recent political developments. Since the 1960s, the GCC states have harnessed their potential to exploit the wealth accrued from the oil boom to build their infrastructure and grow their economies. But, the high level of dependency on oil as the primary source feeding their Gross Domestic Product also made their economies volatile and vulnerable to fluctuations in the global oil price. The decline in oil price and the threat of depletion of this natural resource has presented subsequent challenges in the economic, environmental and social spheres in the Gulf. Consequently, the GCC countries have realised the importance of diversifying their economies following the need to move away from dependency on oil. This book presents a variety of recommendations for ways in which these states can achieve economic diversification in shifting towards a non-hydrocarbon environment and a knowledge economy.
