This book considers how music, musicality, and ideologies of musicality are working within the specific construction of waka on the theme of male love in Kitamura Kigin¿s Iwatsutsuji (1676) and Ihara Saikaküs Nanshoku ¿kagami (1687) by using a modified generative theory of music. This modified theory seeks to get at the interdependent meanings that may exist among the music, image, and the text of the waka in question. In all, this study guides the reader through five waka on the theme of male love and demonstrates not only how each waka is inherently musical but how the image and text may interdependently relate to the ways in which premodern Japanese song poets may not only have thought in and with sound but may have also utilized a diverse array of musical gestures to construct new objects of knowledge. In the case of this study, these new objects of knowledge seem to have aided in situating a changing musicopoetics that aligned with changing constructions of male desire.

Arsenic contamination in drinking water and associated adverse outcomes is one of the major health issues in more than 50 countries worldwide. This book covers several essential aspects of pervasive ambient backscatter communication, one of the most cutting-edge technologies for Internet-of-Things. It begins with introductory Part I, which presents visions, basic concepts, principles, and paradigms of ambient backscatter. Also, a taxonomy of state-of-the-art ambient backscatter systems is provided from the perspective of the OSI model. Part II and III study how ambient backscatter systems work on the communication and networking levels. Specifically, Part II discusses in detail how to make use of ambient WiFi signals to provide high-throughput backscatter communications with WiFi 1 (chapter 5), WiFi 2-3 (chapter 4), WiFi 4 (chapter 3), WiFi 5-6 (chapter 6) standards. Further, Part III includes several of the most advanced ambient backscatter network solutions, which are made possible by the first multi-hop backscatter (chapter 7), first backscatter mesh (chapter 8), and multiprotocol backscatter (chapter 9). On top of reliable communication and networks, we propose two novel applications that are thought impossible before, lightweight spatial sound recording over the air (chapter 10) and self-powered wireless wearables for healthcare (chapter 11). To conclude the monograph, we point out critical challenges for realizing the vision of pervasive backscatter IoTs and potential directions of ambient backscatter applications. This book offers a distinctive approach to the right not to be subjected to enforced disappearance. Over the last decade, the entry into force of the UN Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance has brought to the forefront of legal discussion the need to effectively address the practice of disappearance. Yet, there are still obstacles to combatting it, which are in part due to a limited understanding of the right¿s underlying concept, content and scope.This book examines the phenomenon and definition of enforced disappearance and sheds new light on the right against disappearance. Presenting a doctrinal appraisal of the norm¿s legal value, it suggests that the right against enforced disappearance holds a customary value, while also arguing that it has since attained a jus cogens status. Lastly, it examines in detail the rights to truth and reparation and how regional and national courts have interpreted these norms. It assesses the UN Convention¿s dynamics and considers whether the lack of a right against disappearance embedded in regional human rights systems affects individuals¿ protection.The book provides an overview of key jurisprudence on disappearances, making it of benefit to both practitioners and theorists of international law.
