This book presents a selection of peer-reviewed contributions to the fifth Bayesian Young Statisticians Meeting, BaYSM 2021, held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic on 1-3 September 2021. Despite all the challenges of an online conference, the meeting provided a valuable opportunity for early career researchers, including MSc students, PhD students, and postdocs to connect with the broader Bayesian community.The proceedings highlight many different topics in Bayesian statistics, presenting promising methodological approaches to address important challenges in a variety of applications. The book is intended for a broad audience of people interested in statistics, and provides a series of stimulating contributions on theoretical, methodological, and computational aspects of Bayesian statistics.

This book addresses problems of GNSS performance support under geomagnetic storms and solar radio bursts. It analyses both physical and radio-engineering sources of GNSS performance deterioration caused by geomagnetic storms, solar radio bursts and peculiarities of the polar and equatorial ionosphere. The book takes into consideration both standalone GNSS and differential GNSS. Based on experimental data analysis, it presents a systematic approach to maintaining reliable GNSS performance despite the Space Weather impacts.Given its scope, the book offers a valuable resource for GNSS users and equipment developers, as well as researchers and students whose work involves GNSS remote sensing, surveying, navigation, and related disciplines.

Although several excellent works exist that describe the effective elastic thickness (Te) of the lithosphere-its theory, significance and relevance to Earth sciences in general-none cover the details of the methods for its estimation. This book brings together the disparate knowledge required to estimate Te in one handy volume: signal processing, harmonic analysis, civil engineering, and foundational mathematics and physics, in addition to the relevant geophysics and, to a lesser extent, geology. Its two principal focus areas are spectral estimation, covering various approaches to estimating the admittance and coherence between gravity and topography using Slepian multitapers and fan wavelets; and algebraic and finite difference solutions of the plate bending partial differential equation in a variety of geological settings. This book would be suitable for postgraduate students beginning their research, up to faculty professors interested in diversifying their skills.

The Damanhur Federation, situated in Valchiusella, North-West Italy, is one of Europe's longest-lasting spiritual-esoteric communities. Nevertheless, there has hitherto been nearly no scientific study of this group, with the exception of a handful of specialised-journal articles. This collection fills that gap by collating the various scholarly contributions which over the years have dealt with Damanhur, aiming to present the phenomenon to a public of specialists, students and people who are just curious in a volume focusing on the multidisciplinary nature of the community as a whole. We consider the various spheres making up the social, cultural, spiritual and organisational life of Damanhur through analysis and interpretation of its historical evolution and more recent changes which have affected the community since its founder's death. The contributions combine field research with theoretical reflection, making use of both qualitative (discursive interviews and participant observation) and quantitative (questionnaires) methods.

This book provides a unique perspective on the perpetrators and victims of political violence, using original evidence from the deadly attacks perpetrated in Paris in 2015. Much of the current literature focuses on the perpetrators of such violence. This volume, however, offers a deeper analysis by focusing not only on the terrorists themselves but on understanding the reactions of the general population affected by such lethal acts. It provides a more detailed view of the opponents of terrorism, namely us, and explains how our own reactions can increase or decrease, the potential for political violence. Part I introduces the most relevant theories within social psychology and political psychology that are used to understand terrorism; Part II examines empirical evidence from a French context; and Part III discusses policy implications, with the prevention of political violence as a long-term goal. Finally, the volume offers a blueprint for a more appropriate conceptualization of terrorism as arising out of intergroup conflict suggesting ways to build a resilient society. The book examines the meaning of justice in African political philosophy, building on the use-theoretical approach. Currently, most of the philosophical works in this context advocate for a communal interpretation of the meaning of justice, such as the 'relational theory of justice' and 'Ubuntu justice as fairness.' The author argues that this foundation of justice in the community undermines the self, which is a major problem with these theories. As an attempt to go beyond communitarianism in African thought, the book recognizes other philosophical frameworks for elaborating the meaning of justice in ordinary people's experience, such as vitalism, theism, ubuntuism, and semantic framework. The author opts for a reconstructed ubuntu-based theory of the meaning of justice that reflects the traditional African experience and recuperates 'valuing self-existence' and 'valuing other-existence' as its foundations. The book further identifies the centrality of rights in defining justice intraditional African communities.
