From climate catastrophes to sudden wars, the world faces conflicts of unprecedented scale. Yet around the globe, Indigenous leaders continue to move forward with determination and hope. Leaders demand change, resisting the destruction of the environment and suggesting solutions to today¿s global crisis. Age-old practices are experiencing a cultural revival and the lessons call for all of us to walk alongside Indigenous peoples. In the face of crisis and the progress of technology, this book shows how to stand with Indigenous peoples through uncertainty and chaos. How to stand with Indigenous peoples is about how to listen, how to walk together and how to act.

The third edition of this textbook has been fully revised and adds material about the SSA form, polymorphism, garbage collection, and pattern matching. It presents techniques for making realistic compilers for simple to intermediate-complexity programming languages. The techniques presented in the book are close to those used in professional compilers, albeit in places slightly simplified for presentation purposes. "Further reading" sections point to material about the full versions of the techniques. All phases required for translating a high-level language to symbolic machine language are covered, and some techniques for optimising code are presented. Type checking and interpretation are also included.Aiming to be neutral with respect to implementation languages, algorithms are mostly presented in pseudo code rather than in any specific language, but suggestions are in many places given for how these can be realised in different language paradigms.Depending on how much of the material from the book is used, it is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate courses for introducing compiler design and implementation.

This book provides a practically applicable guide to the applications of pharmogenomics across medicine. Background information is provided on the mechanisms associated with membrane transporters, drug-metabolizing enzymes and their importance in pharmagenomics. Detailed guidance is subsequently presented on how to apply these techniques in disciplines including cardiology, gastroenterology, oncology, transplantation surgery, infectious diseases, anesthesia and analgesia, neurology, psychiatry, primary care, and public health. Clear easy-to-follow instructions are given on how to use big data technologies and public health databases in day-to-day clinical practice.Pharmacogenomics in Clinical Practice concisely covers how pharmacogenomic technologies and techniques can be applied in daily medical practice. It is therefore an ideal up-to-date resource for any medical practitioner, trainee or researcher across all medical disciplines whowant to better understand how to use these techniques.

Theory and early empirical work posed that herbivore pressure should be lower on islands than on the mainland owing to lower herbivore abundance and diversity in insular systems. Consequently, plant taxa found on islands are expected to be less protected or even to have lost their defences completely. While early observational studies supported the prediction of lower herbivory and plant defences on islands, recent island-mainland comparisons have yielded mixed results, with some studies finding no differences between islands and mainlands or, surprisingly, higher herbivory and plant defences on islands. In this book, the authors aim to re-assess current theory and initiate a new generation of work on insularity effects on plant-herbivore interactions. This book aims to fill the research gaps by integrating the research that has been done to date and by compiling and summarising new research on insularity effects on plant-herbivore interactions. It provides a critical examinationof the patterns in light of classical theory and identifies potential mechanisms or underlying processes. It also aims to raise new questions that will form the basis for a revised and more robust research programme.

For the past 9,000 years, people lived and flourished along the 1,000-mile Aleutian archipelago reaching from the American continent nearly to Asia. The Aleutian chain and surrounding waters supported 40,000 or more people before the Russians arrived. Despite the antiquity of continuous human occupation, the size of the area, and the fascinating and complex social organization, the region has received scant notice from the public. This volume provides a thorough review describing the varied cultures of the ancestral Unangax¿, using archaeological reports, articles, and unpublished data; documented Unangax¿ oral histories, and ethnohistories from early European and American visitors, assessed through the authors¿ multi-decade experience working in the Aleutian Archipelago.Unangam Tanangin ilan Unangax¿/Aliguutax¿ Maqax¿singin ama Kadaangim Tanangin Anag¿ix¿taqangis (Culture and Archaeology of the Ancestral Unangax¿/Aleut of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska) begins with a description of the physical and biological world (The Physical Environment and The Living Environment) of which the Unangax¿ are part, followed by a description of the archaeological research in the region (The People). The rest of the book addresses ancestral Unangax¿ life including settlement on the land, and the characteristics of sites based on the activities that took place there (People on the Landscape). From this broad perspective, the view narrows to the people making a living through hunting, fishing, and collecting food along the shore-line, making their intricate tools, storing and cooking food, and sewing and weaving (Making a Living); household life including house construction, households, and the work done within the home (Life at Home); and the personal changes an individual goes through from the time they are born through death, including spiritual transitions and ceremonies (Transitions), and the evidence for these events in the material record. This bookis written in gratitude to the Unangax¿ and Aleut people for the opportunity to work in Unangam Tanangin or the Aleutian Islands, and to learn about your culture. We hope you find this book useful. The purpose of this book is to introduce the broader public to the cultures of this North Pacific archipelago in a single source, while simultaneously providing researchers a comprehensive synthesis of archaeology in the region.

This fourth edition offers a practical guide to endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular disease and provides a comprehensive reference for the related neurovascular anatomy and the various disorders that affect the vascular system. Chapters cover fundamental principles underlying cerebral and spinal angiography; interventional techniques, devices, and practice guidelines; and commonly encountered cerebrovascular disorders for which interventional and endovascular methods are appropriateBuilding on the previous edition, the text is presented similarly in style and scope to emphasize accessibility and ease of reading. All chapters are fully updated to include more recent data, and obsolete products and techniques are replaced with the most current technology. Some key updates include:A greater emphasis on the use of radial artery access for the discussed endovascular techniques. The associations of COVID-19 with ischemic stroke and the implicationsof providing care for cerebrovascular patients during a pandemic. An extensive update to the acute ischemic stroke chapter with new references and format to more closely follow the format of other chapters in that section.Expansion of the pediatric sections of disease chapters, including discussions of genetic associations with disease. This is an ideal guide for clinicians and trainees in neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology, as well as practicing clinicians in related fields caring for patients with cerebrovascular disease.

For over 50 years, clinicians have known that macrolide antibiotics have effects on inflammation and the immune system that are not related to their antimicrobial properties. These immunomodulatory properties, best described for treating inflammatory airway diseases, protect the lung and the host and improve clinical status. This book summarizes our current knowledge regarding proposed mechanisms for these properties, established clinical results, and what the future may hold with emphasis on novel clinical applications and the fascinating development of non-antimicrobial macrolides with preserved and enhanced immunomodulatory properties.

This book provides an overview on recent progress in anion channels and transporters. It covers multiple scales of analysis ranging from studying the molecular basis of function at atomic resolution to cellular consequences to channel/transporter dysfunction and approaches to correct such processes by pharmacological intervention. Similar anion channels and transporters are expressed in multiple tissues ¿ often fulfilling similar cellular tasks, but also clearly distinct functions. The aim is to combine work on multiple cell and organ systems.
