Built on the shores of the Delaware Bay in 1925, Sequoia is a Trumpy-designed 104-foot wooden motor yacht that has hosted eight U.S. presidents and has become a Chesapeake Bay icon. Giles M. Kelly served as the yachts skipper from 1983 to 1988, and was surprised to find no book chronicled her history. During his tenure as captain of the yacht, he took the boat around the country on a goodwill cruise and later oversaw her major restoration. His wife, Ann Stevens, a professional photographer, documented much of that trip and the restoration. Although only two years of the ships logs could be found, Kelly undertook to uncover the truth of Sequoias many sea stories by primary research and interviewing those who had served and visited aboard. He soon discovered a kind of Upstairs, Downstairs perspective on Sequoia. This element lends a unique appeal to this saga of an interesting vessel and her service through eight administrations.

  • - The Plot to Kill President Lincoln
    av Rebecca C. Jones

The Mystery of Mary Surratt is a true story about the Maryland woman who was convicted and hanged in 1865 for her alleged part in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. For more than a century, historians have argued about her true role. Some claim she knew nothing about John Wilkes Booth's plan to shoot Lincoln and other top government leaders. Others insist she knowingly helped Booth and might even have masterminded the whole plot. This book lays out the facts in a narrative that lets young readers draw their own conclusions. Author Rebecca C. Jones researched the book at the Surratt House library in Clinton, Maryland, where she read letters, old newspapers, diary entries, and other sources. She also followed the Booth escape route, interviewed researchers, and found a diary written by a woman who was in the Old Capitol Prison with Mary Surratt. The book is aimed at middle-schoolers, but is accessible to fourth graders studying Maryland history. It should help students develop critical thinking skills as they decide for themselves whether Mary Surratt was guilty or innocent. Grades 4 to 8

This fourth book in a series about Maryland's counties includes Somerset, Dorchester, Worcester, and Wicomico Counties on the Eastern Shore of the state. Written for children in elementary school, the book not only acquaints readers with the basic facts about the area's history, geography, climate, plants, animals, education, religion, and sites of interest, it also features some fascinating facts about the various counties. Typical of the things children will learn from this book are these: - Smith Island in Somerset County has a most unusual form of government. It has no mayor or town council and residents do not pay local taxes. The leaders of the community have always been the ministers of the church.- Harriet Tubman led more than three hundred slaves from Dorchester County northward to freedom. Apparently she would do anything to help a runaway slave escape. She and a band of slaves once hid in a pile of manure until the coast was clear.- Annie Oakley of Wild West Show fame lived for a time in Cambridge. When her neighbor complained that his walnut tree hadn't produced walnuts that year, Oakley showed up at his house with a basket of purchased walnuts and apologized for having shot the walnuts out of his tree.- When the Boardwalk at Ocean City in Worcester County was first built in 1902, it was about two blocks long. Because it was low and high tides affected it, the Board-walk was picked up and stored each night.- The Whitehaven ferry in Wicomico County, which is guided by a cable and carries three cars at a time across the Wicomico River, has been in operation for more than three hundred years. It is thought to be the oldest continuously operating ferry inthe United States.

From early December 1941 through much of 1945, many U.S. Navy and U.S. Army Air Force and Army personnel served at joint BrazilianU.S. bases in the coastal cities of Brazil and on two islands in the Atlantic Narrows between that country and Africa. The U.S. Fourth Fleet, based in Recife, Brazil, and its Fleet Air Wing 16, based at several coastal cities, were there to wage war on Axis Power submarines, surface raiders, and blockade runners. The U-Boats and armed raiders were sinking Allied ships at an alarming rate. The blockade runners were carrying vital war materials to the Axis Powers. This compilation of anecdotes, photographs, and maps is presented to provide the reader with a perspective on the experiences of U.S. service personnel who were lucky enough to serve in Brazil. It is hoped that the commentary on the history of Brazil and its people will inspire greater interest in that country and the realization of its importance in the future of South America and the entire western hemisphere.
