Medical emergencies can happen anytime and anywhere, so first aid training can be very useful. It can be especially important if you are out at sea, where medical assistance can be hours or even days away. When onboard a seagoing vessel, even minor accidents, such as burns, sprains, and fractures, has the potential to become life-threatening. Being prepared and knowing essential first aid care can be the difference between life and death. This illustrated instructional guide offers a quick overview for the correct way to provide first aid. Chapters include standard medical examinations, different illnesses and related symptoms, effects of heat, cold, and water, and collecting relevant information about a sick or injured person. Such information is valuable not only for the person providing first aid, but also to give over the radio, because it may facilitate the decision-making about treatment strategy, thus saving lives under extreme circumstances.

A charming picture book with 18 fun colourful spreads showing children what frustration and feeling alone looks like from the outside, how to get over anger, and how to reach out to others when they are frustrated.

Take a rare look at a little known Third Reich badge awarded to volunteers from the occupied eastern territories who served in various German formations. As the German military situation worsened in 1942, Hitler authorised formation of so-called eastern units made up of Slavic volunteers. With the number of eastern volunteers rising rapidly and many of them already having distinguished themselves in action, the question of how to honour their service arose. In July 1942, Hitler ordered the awarding of the Decoration for Eastern Peoples. Those permitted to be awarded included Turkish units, Cossack units, Crimean Tatar units, Auxiliary Police (Schutzmannschaft) Battalions, unarmed auxiliaries (Hilfswilligen, or Hiwis) in German units, and domestic security units in the operations zone. Very rare examples of actual badges, award documents and soldbuchs, and never before seen war era images are presented here.

The SS war against the partisans, dubbed Bandenkampf (literally "fight against bandits") at the time, differed greatly from the conventional war at the front. The 24. This book is not only a history of this infamous SS division - including details of formation, training, commanders, and operations - but is also a look at the German Anti-Partisan War Badge in Gold, and its recipients from the unit. Very rare examples of actual badges as well as award documents and soldbuchs are presented, and includes nerve before seen war era images." --- from back cover.

Conceived in the waning days of World War II as an escort for the mammoth Convair B-36 bomber, the McDonnell Model 36 “Voodoo” first took to the air in 1948. With advances in turbojet technology, aerial refueling, and miniaturized nuclear weapons, the Model 36 was recast as a fighter-bomber of unimaginable firepower: the F-101A Strategic Fighter. Overcoming tremendous developmental challenges, the Voodoo served into the late-1980s, nearly forty years after its maiden flight. As a nuclear strike aircraft, reconnaissance platform, and reliable high-performance interceptor, the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo carries the sole distinction among the famed “Century Series” fighters of serving in the most trouble spots, from the era of Eisenhower and Khrushchev through that of Reagan and Gorbachev, in the waning days of the Cold War. Based on hundreds of pages of recently declassified documents, this new work brings the Voodoo into its long-denied place in the limelight.

The human tongue and palate know only five tastes; our nose complements this rather limited sense. Much of what we think we taste is actually derived from our sense of smell! Because the nose and mouth are connected, taste and smell work hand-in-hand to complete our eating experiences; incorporating scent, in the form of essential oils, is a logical way to optimize our meals without adding additional chemicals and fillers to our food. The recipes in this book focus on using fresh, local (if possible) ingredients and scented essential oils to nourish your loved ones in a healthy and varied way. Included are the basics of essential oils, including recipes for creating your own spiced oils, vinegars, butters, salts, syrups, honey, and sugars. Easy-to-follow recipes for warm and cold appetizers, soups, main and side dishes, desserts, and drinks and cocktails will have you cooking with essential oils in no time! A tips and tricks section helps to eliminate any guesswork on the part of the home cook, and the authors include menu examples by occasion. Eliane Zimmermann, leading lecturer for aromatherapy practice and graduate of the renowned Shirley Price International College of Aromatherapy, provides the introduction.

Trace the evolution of the Brooklyn tattooing scene's iconographic status with this rare look into the borough's gritty history. Long before hipsters called Brooklyn home, tattoo legends like Tony Polito, Mikey Perfetto, Marcus Pacheco, and Ronnie DellAquila set long-lasting trends from the '50s on, and gave young artists hope in this often unforgiving town. Peter Caruso visits over a dozen owners, artists, and customers, relating Brooklyn's 20th-century tattoo history through biographies of gritty, no-nonsense tattoo artists. Here, they get the attention they deserve as they focus on events that shaped their craft and style and what inspired them, as teenagers, to follow the path of this often thankless profession in New York's toughest borough. "Back in the day," artists didn't apprentice, but, like the men in this book, learned the ropes in basements and worked out of kitchens, sometimes experimenting with Asian and tribal styles, but always returning to the colorful, traditional, American tattooing Brooklyn is known for.

Initially, they were the waste product of wooden bowls turned in an ancient technique by Robin Wood of the United Kingdom, an expert pole-lathe turner and author. Known for his historical and functional objects made on a foot-powered lathe, Wood keeps the tradition of pole turning alive. The leg-powered process Wood uses results in thousands of solid, round chunks -- Cores -- that get broken out of the centre of the bowl at the last moment. Wood donated 100 Cores, which ranged in size from 50 x 50mm to 75 x 100mm to The Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia. The Center sent Cores to two-score artists who agreed to the challenge of reworking them into new pieces of art. These works, shown here in over 240 colour photographs, formed the exhibition -- Robin Wood's CORES Recycled -- by The Center for Art in Wood.

This pictorial guide provides a photographic tour of the last 400 years of Rhode Island lighthouse history. Over thirty lighthouse stations are described, from Watch Hill, near the Connecticut border in the south, to the inner harbour of Providence. The lighthouse station locations are identified using navigational charts and their characteristics, including date established, tower structure, optics, and fog signals. Also included are the dozen or so lighthouses that no longer exist. Probably not as well known, images and characteristics of these aids are similarly discussed. Over 300 images, some over 130 years old, show the original towers and stations, accompanied by present-day photographs that compare the development and evolution of these lighthouses. Many of the images found on these pages have been collected from historical resources and are being published for the first time. This book is a must-have for the lighthouse enthusiast, maritime buff, and anyone who is interested in Rhode Island history.

The search for physical perfection began with the Greeks, who first competed nude in athletic games in the 8th century BCE and created their gods in the ideal human form. Peak of Perfection celebrates the universal fascination with the nude and the power of beauty. The richly detailed, black and white, fine art photographs portray the apex of youthful vitality and the sublime architecture of the body. Alternately meditative and exhilarating, these dynamic performers express their sensuality and acrobatic skills so dramatically that the images leap off the page and grab you by the heart. Couples express the passion of romantic love and soloists display their virtuosity, the result of countless hours of training. Meticulously selected quotes from poets, artists, and philosophers throughout history complement the intimate portraits. This deluxe collection is a compelling invitation to contemplate beauty and to share with someone you love.
