This book offers a selection of his sketches, drawings, paintings, and photographs from that time, and presents one artist's view of the war from North Africa, through the campaigns in Italy, France, and Germany. Guilloché is the decorative engraving of a metal surface, such as watch cases, cufflinks, or Fabergé Eggs, with the use of a hand-powered device called a rose engine. This passionately researched book tracks the birth, decline, and revival of this endangered craft and features exclusive information from the world's few living professional guillocheurs, as well as an exploration of the distinction between guilloché and its forebearer, ornamental turning. The word "guilloché" was first used to describe details of ancient Greek columns, but the rose engine didn't appear until the mid-1700s, near the French-Swiss border. With a basic knowledge of this contraption, and the straight-line machine, aspiring guillocheurs can follow 21 pattern-cutting "recipes" to create several classic designs and discover endless possibilities for new concepts. Authoritative text, gallery and detail photographs, dynamic illustrations, and precise, hand-drawn renderings will assist and delight adventurous craftspeople, machinists and engineers, and steampunks alike.

Items shown in the book used to be the author’s own work clothes, equipment and tools, or they belonged to fellow contractors who worked with him in different places at different times.

The intellectual adventure of developing the atomic bomb at Los Alamos has been well documented, but the fact is that 90% of the Manhattan Project expenditures went to produce the exotic nuclear explosive materials required. That is the story told here, a story of the brilliant harnessing of American industry to build a coordinated network of huge production plants using technology that was being developed even as the plants themselves were rising. It is the story of multiple, complex production methods being pursued simultaneously without knowing any of them would ultimately work, a story of daring gambles and their ultimate redemption. It is the story of the frantic building of subsequent, larger plants that were worked to the limits of their safe operation during the Cold War arms race. This is a story told by the author in historical narrative and new high-resolution photographs of fast-disappearing relics.
