The Balmat Mining District in southern St Lawrence County, New York, is a former mining site known among collectors for its highly prized minerals. For more than 100 years, it was one of the world's most important sources of talc and zinc. Because most of the zinc ore was crushed underground and brought to the surface for separation, only mineral specimens brought out by miners and geologists have survived. Outstanding specimens from both the talc and zinc mines, preserved in only a few collections, are featured in this book -- many for the first time. Some of the fine specimens included are hexagonite, manganocummingtonite, groutite, calcite, sphalerite, and magnetite. With over 200 photographs, this book is the first comprehensive description of the history, geology, and mineralogy of this important mining district.

Fine art photography, like science, is undergoing major transformations. Just as George Eastman's invention of roll film changed the world's artistic outlook, so too have Instagram and other communications technologies multiplied the possibilities for artistic expression. This retrospective, organized by genre rather than year, explores important categories such as cameraless photograms, self-portraiture, environmental portraiture, street photography, documentation, and abstraction. It contains examples of the groundbreaking work of photographers from Diane Arbus, Edward Weston, and Alfred Stieglitz to Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg, often grouping the artists together in unexpected ways. While it provides a brief history of the different genres, this is not a history book, but rather a study of the uniqueness of particular photographic visions in their time. It will inspire fine art photographers to challenge preconceived concepts, overcome creative block, and become part of the new avant-garde.

This concise history is the first book in a new series on the Soviet space program and features many rare photographs, diagrams, and charts. When Soviet rocket experts examined the first Nazi V-2s in early 1945, they immediately realized that their own technology was years behind what the Germans had developed. The dropping of the two American atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 made the path forward clear: the development of a Soviet atomic bomb, and a suitable missile to carry it. This story begins with the Soviet's pre- and early war developments in rocket technology, then covers the discovery and study of the V-2s at Peenemünde, Germany. The Soviets assembled remaining V-2 rockets from existing parts and their mode of operation was studied. Developments in the Soviet R and G series missiles in the early 1950s are discussed in detail, as is the development for the peaceful use of Soviet rocket technology in space.
