These 580+ juicy images capture the fact that throughout history, artists and artisans have depicted vegetables in remarkable ways. Still lifes, photographs, amusing antique postcards, seed packet art--all sorts of vegetable illustrations have been created to arouse physical and aesthetic appetites, and they are displayed here together with interesting botanical and historical insights. This wealth of vegetable art includes paintings by American artists like Lily Martin Spencer, Ernest Lawson, and Charles Demuth; engravings and lithographs by major printmaking companies like Louis Prang and Company; botanical illustrations; and commercial images drawn from vintage catalogs and seed packets. Vegetables are represented in colorful glory, from the hundreds we appreciate daily--like tomatoes, potatoes, peas, and carrots--to less-familiar vegetables like sea kale, cardoon, and walking onions.

In good times and bad, our best friends are there for support, therapy, and unconditional love. Especially now—where would we be without our dogs? Although the so-called modernists of Palm Springs embrace the serenity of life in post-WWII America, the sometimes-harsh realities of contemporary life are impossible to ignore. These mid-twentieth-century reenactors are often transplants, enjoying the Palm Springs lifestyle with their dogs and friends as their chosen family. The beautiful climate, wide-open spaces, and clean decor make the perfect home for their desert pets, which are as lovingly groomed and cared for as their surroundings. In these photographs, Nancy Baron puts these four-legged Palm Springs residents into the spotlight, where they add the same warmth and life to the image as they do to their homes.

The General Motors Corporation DUKW was without a doubt the most successful amphibious military vehicle ever constructed. This is due in large part to the enormous amount of scientific and engineering talent that was devoted to the project. Included in the design team were America's Cup winner Rod Stephens, adventurer and environmentalist Dennis Puleston, and scientist and engineer Palmer C. Putnam. The DUKW was so successful and so widely used that Gen. Dwight Eisenhower described it as "one of the most valuable pieces of equipment produced by the United States during the war." This book chronicles the development and use of these vehicles from concept to combat in WWII and Korea. Through dozens of archival photos, many never before published, as well as detailed photographs of some of the finest existent examples of surviving vehicles, these iconic armored fighting vehicles are explored, and their history is explained.

Aubrey Bodine, pictorialist, modernist, and documentarian, was a Baltimore Sunday Sun feature photographer from 1924 to 1970. This book contains his vintage Annapolis, US Naval Academy, and Chesapeake Bay photographs, chronicling the mid-20th century in and around Maryland's state capital. These images demonstrate Bodine's pictorialist and modernist photographic eye for mansions, government buildings, city streets, and sailboat racing, encapsulating the essence of Annapolis from 1928 to 1970. Bodine published four books, wrote articles, judged Salons, won awards from all over the world, lectured across northeast America, and held down a full-time job at a major metropolitan newspaper. This is the fifth Bodine picture book assembled by his daughter, Jennifer. Their previous collaborations are Bodine's Chesapeake Bay Country, Bodine's City, Bodine's Industry, and Trains: Photography of A. Aubrey Bodine.

How many states claim quartz as their official state gem? This guidebook answers this question and more as it explores the treasures that are designated official state gems and minerals. More than 150 photographs showcase these marvels, from the Star Blue quartz of Alabama to the jade nephrite of Wyoming. Each state entry is presented with details about the state gem and mineral, with pictures of each, and a map of the state showing where the gem or mineral can be found. Museums and parks with minerals are listed in the appendix so readers can go see specimens in person. Encyclopedic yet easy to read, this book is great for mineral and gem enthusiasts and future geologists of all ages.

More than 600 archival color and black-and-white photos take readers inside the magnificent Hotel des Artistes on Manhattan's West Side. This is the well-researched, untold story of the artists, returning from stints in Paris in the early 1900s, who convinced Manhattan businessmen to invest in an arts colony on West 67th Street. Readers are invited on a tour of the north-light studios, salon ballroom, and iconic cafe where America's great painters, sculptors, writers, illustrators, actors, and dancers created a beehive of creativity. In addition to stories of select artists, a directory lists the names of the hundreds of tenants who populated the building from 1917 to 2020-an "army of artists" whose work collectively changed the world. This book is a treasure trove for creatives, historians, and the large network of artists and their families with ties to the landmark Hotel des Artistes

At the age of 82, renowned illustrator and former United States Marine Corps artist-in-residence Col. Charles Waterhouse set out to paint US Marines and Navy corpsmen engaged in the acts for which they were awarded the Medal of Honor. At the time of his death, Waterhouse had completed over 332 paintings and portraits of recipients from the Civil War to Afghanistan, leaving behind as a final gift to his Corps and country the most comprehensive collection of Medal of Honor paintings ever created by a single artist. Valor in Action tells the true story of some amazing American heroes who went above and beyond the call of duty, and the tenacious artist who-armed only with a paintbrush-sought to capture their heroic actions in the moment they occurred, to his dying breath.

Palero Tata Rodriguez is your guide through this exploration of Palo Kimbisa, an Afro-Cuban religion where nothing is as it seems: elements of nature become spirits that speak to the Tata and initiates, clay pots become miniature sacred groves, and a chef becomes a Tata--a counselor, protector, and teacher. Palo goddaughter Sophia Kelly Shultz experiences and relates Tata Rodriguez's practices through anecdotes, firsthand accounts, and exquisite pen-and-ink illustrations. Special passages bring life to concepts represented by each Spirit; others highlight important facets of the palero's beliefs and practices. Stories invite anyone, from future initiates to those who simply wish to know more about this religion, to get a feel for the rules and practicalities--and the magic--of Palo.
