  • - A Guide for Small- and Medium-Sized Libraries
    av Raymond Ranier
    905

As the mission statements of libraries across the nation change to reflect the realities of post-liberal America and its emphasis on economic values, librarians have had to pick up their long-standing paradigm and move it in an endless shuffle from knowledge stewardship, to information broker, to entertainment director. Many library boards have made it clear that the public library, especially in smaller communities, can earn its keep only by becoming the center of educational, informational, and entertainment possibilities for their taxpayers. This has necessitated a ten-year learning curve unprecedented in professional life. Few librarians, even those being schooled today in our graduate schools, are prepared to shift into high gear when it comes to conceptualizing, planning, paying for, and evaluating public programs for their patrons. Unlike its predecessors that leave ideas for public programming to the imagination, Programming for Adults lists ideas, names names, and massages the already fertile librarian imagination to the challenge and creativity inherent in adult programming. Legal issues are discussed, possible pitfalls are flagged, and evaluative follow-ups are suggested. The advice put forth in this book can help you put on your show to the satisfaction of your boss and, more importantly, to the accolades of your public.

Because music publishing and distribution are largely outside the network of publishers and vendors that libraries use to acquire most of their monographs, there are many inherent difficulties faced by librarians and library staff whose jobs include the acquisition of printed or recorded music. Because of the international nature of the music publishing industry, libraries must often acquire their music stock from many countries and in multiple languages. Fling offers a how-to guide that addresses these issues and provides answers on where and how to acquire these materials. Key features include: Publication and distribution avenues for both printed and recorded music, Directories of vendors that specialize in particular types of music, Techniques for ordering music and dealing with music approval plans, Sources and techniques for finding secondhand and out-of-print music, How to acquire dissertations and microfilm and photographic reproductions of early-music resource, an extended glossary of specialized English and foreign-language terms that appear on published music, publishers' catalogs, and music bibliographies A comprehensive bibliography lists print and Web music resources, including manuals and journals of music librarianship; music editing, publishing, and library acquisitions; directories of music libraries and information centers, record labels, and vendors; music-in-print sources; and national bibliographies of music. The bibliography also contains information on general library acquisitions.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People''s Republic of China is located on the southeastern coast of China, and the Macao SAR can be found off of China''s southern coast. Both regions have recently been released from European colonial rule: Hong Kong from British control in 1997 and Macao from Portugal in 1999. As SARs, Hong Kong and Macao retain a high degree of autonomy, and they control all issues except those of state (e.g. diplomatic relations and national defense). As with other volumes in the Historical Dictionaries series, the Historical Dictionary of the Hong Kong SAR and the Macao SAR includes maps, photographs, a list of acronyms, a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, and events as well as political, economic and social background. However, unlike the rest of the series, all these sections are presented in duplicate: one for Hong Kong and one for Macao. The authoritative analysis and informative data presented clearly elucidate the unique situation of these two territories.

Every one of us has experienced harassment in one form or another, either as a target, as a witness, or as the bully, and we all carry hidden bruises. This guide addresses the often invisible problem of bullying in the halls, offices, and classrooms of schools and will assist educators to know what to look for and what to do when they see a child being harassed. Forty four fiction books with bullying as the major theme are reviewed and discussed. They have been selected based on grade level with chapters organized in four sections: kindergarten through third grade, intermediate readers (grades 4-6), middle school readers, and more sophisticated titles for high school students. Each chapter begins with an introduction that describes the harassment most seen in each grade levels. For each title, there is an in-depth summary, activities, and quotes from the book for students to discuss. The final section provides resources for teachers, librarians, counselors, administrators, and parents. A necessary tool for teachers, staff, and educators, as well as parents.

  • av David A. Kronick
    1 259

For more than forty years, librarians and others have come to rely upon David Kronick's knowledge and expertise of the history and development of scientific journals. His writings have blazed a trail through the uncharted territory of scientific serial publishing. This volume brings together for the first time a collection of fifteen articles that discuss particular aspects of scientific communication from the early days of its ascendancy, 'before the information explosion.' The essays examine topics such as editorial policy in the early journals, the economic side of scientific publishing in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, aspects of journal indexing, early modern scientific networks, and the issues of authorship and authority. The whole constitutes a body of work that reveals both the richness and scope for further inquiry that has motivated Kronick for decades. All are topics that librarians as well as students and scholars in the philosophy of science, the sociology of science, the history of science, and the rhetoric of science will be certain to find enlightening and inspiring.

  • - Time in Children's Literature
    av Maria Nikolajeva
    1 065

Now available in paperback! In this radically new approach to text typology, Maria Nikolajeva examines the depiction of time in literature for children. Nikolajeva identifies a continuum of texts ranging from those that depict non-linear time, typical of archaic, or mythical, thought, to those that express linearity, typical of contemporary mainstream literature. The author argues that literature is a deconstruction, a displacement, of myth, and that it depicts a symbolic coming-of-age process rather than a strictly representational reflection of a concrete "e;reality."e; The texts are categorized by the degree to which the coming-of-age process is accomplished; the movement is from an initial condition of primary harmony (Arcadia, Paradise, Utopia) through different stages toward either a successful or a failed passage. From Mythic to Linear is a broad study, encompassing a number of children's novels from different epochs and countries: Scandinavian, British, American, Canadian, Australian, South African, and East European. The international character contributes a better knowledge of children's literature from different parts of the world-widening the horizons of children's literature research too often confined to one particular country. Nikolajeva's unique approach allows her to disregard the traditional, and some would argue obsolete, division of children's novels into realism and fantasy. With its unique approach and broad international scope, From Mythic to Linear will be of interest to all those interested in children's literature and in comparative literature in general. Includes bibliography and footnotes.

  • - Portrayals of Mental Illness in the Movies
    av Jacqueline Noll Zimmerman
    825

The stigmatization of mental illness in film has been well documented in literature. Little has been written, however, about the ability of movies to portray mental illness sympathetically and accurately. People Like Ourselves: Portrayals of Mental Illness in the Movies fills that void with a close look at mental illness in more than seventy American movies, beginning with classics such as The Snake Pit and Now, Voyager and including such contemporary successes as A Beautiful Mind and As Good as It Gets. Films by legendary directors Billy Wilder, William Wyler, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and John Cassavetes are included. Through the examination of universal themes relating to one's self and society, the denial of reality, the role of women, creativity, war, and violence, Zimmerman argues that these ground-breaking films defy stereotypes, presenting sympathetic portraits of people who are mentally ill, and advance the movie-going public's understanding of mental illness, while providing insight into its causes, diagnosis, and treatment. More importantly, they portray mentally ill people as ordinary people with conflicts and desires common to everyone. Like the motion pictures it revisits, this fascinating book offers insight, entertainment, and a sense of understanding.
