  • - The Snp and Scottish Greens After the Independence Referendum
    av Lynn Bennie
    2 029,-

This book presents a comprehensive analysis of a remarkable and unexpected outcome of the 2014 referendum on Scottish independence.Despite defeat in the Scottish referendum, the two leading parties in the Yes campaign - the Scottish National Party and Scottish Green Party - experienced an extraordinary surge in membership. The book explains these events, examining the relationship between political parties and social movements, and it assesses the long-term consequences of the surge. Based on surveys of members and interviews with party and movement actors since the referendum, the book analyses the members' involvement in the 2014 referendum, their motives for joining a party, their backgrounds and political attitudes, and their behaviour as party members. A key component of the book is how the surge changed the parties - socio-demographically, ideologically, and organisationally. This book will be of key interest to scholars, students and observers of electoral politics, political participation, social and political movements, and political parties and their members, and more broadly to those interested in the debate on Scottish independence, British politics, and comparative politics.

  • - Oedipal Theory and the Deployment of Sexuality
    av Jerome C Wakefield
    545 - 1 965,-

In Foucault Versus Freud, Jerome C. Wakefield offers a novel analysis of one of the great intellectual clashes of our times, the attack on Sigmund Freud's influential sexual theories by the eminent French philosopher and historian of ideas Michel Foucault.Starting from Foucault's question, "What makes the psychoanalytic theory of incest acceptable to the bourgeois family?", and drawing on Foucault's relatively unexplored published lectures as well as his celebrated History of Sexuality, Vol. 1, Wakefield evaluates Foucault's argument that there is a continuity between the two-century medical anti-masturbation crusade and Freud's theory, providing the reader with an accessible introduction to Foucault's conceptual innovations including power/knowledge, the deployment of sexuality, and the use of surveillance and confession as tactics in medicalizing sexuality and reshaping family life.Rather than allowing the argument to stay at the evidentially uncertain level one often finds in Foucault's writings, Wakefield undertakes close readings of both Freud's "seduction-theory" texts and later Oedipal-period texts to test whether Foucault's provocative arguments find support or disconfirmation. Despite identifying weaknesses in Foucault's position, Wakefield argues that a careful look at Freud's sexual theories through Foucault's theoretical lens changes forever the way one sees Freud's theory--and has the potential to help psychoanalysis move forward in a constructive way. This book is written to be understandable for those who are not steeped in philosophy or familiar with Foucault's philosophy, offering a lucid introduction to Foucault's ideas and his clash with Freud that will be of interest to clinicians, students, and scholars alike.

  • - A Critical Autoethnography
    av Peter Eglin
    2 035,-

What is the life of a Palestinian worth to intellectuals in Canadian universities and news media? Analyzing the Israel Effect documents and analyzes the discursive and organizational methods by which public criticism of Israel's oppression of the Palestinians is silenced in Canada, as experienced through ten episodes in the life of the author over a thirty-year period from 1990-2020 in interaction with his university and local and national Canadian news media. As a sociological work the book is a critical autoethnography. But it is also an atrocity tale, a horror story of institutional self-censorship amounting to the abrogation of intellectual responsibility by those specifically charged with upholding it. In the end, the book is a crossover between academic treatise and journalistic exposé, "a historical narrative written by an academic from the standpoint of a political participant-observer" (Rajan Philips). The Israel Effect itself is analyzed as a three-tier propaganda industry. Hasbara is produced in Israel (Tier 1), disseminated to Israel Lobby groups around the world (Tier 2) and independently re-produced, actively and passively, by the "intellectual" institutions - universities and news media (Tier 3). This book is about the non-Jewish, non-Zionist institutions of Tier 3, the onlookers to war crimes, ethnic cleansing and, arguably, genocide, as in Gaza in October-November 2023.This work stands as a compelling testament to the importance of preserving freedom of expression, and the vital role intellectuals play in challenging injustice and promoting transparency. It is ideal for scholars, activists, and anyone seeking to understand the complexities of political activism and the power dynamics behind public discourse.

  • - Academic Entanglements in Conflicts Over Truths
    av El&#380, &#380, kiewicz & m.fl.
    2 029,-

Increasingly social activists, journalists and policy makers have expressed concern over the proliferation of conspiracy theories in the public space. There is a growing fear of their impact on social cohesion and democracy, their power to erode trust in state institutions and science. These concerns often come with an expectation that it is the responsibility of academics to engage with conspiracy beliefs by countering them. But should they?In this book, contributors show that like everything that relates to conspiracy theories, even the answer to this question is not straightforward and can vary across disciplines and schools, can be influenced by disciplinary ethical codes of conduct, research methodologies, and specific approaches to conspiracy theories. Foregrounding a variety of approaches, from across disciplines (psychology, anthropology, sociology and media studies), academic seniority (from young scholars to full professors), and countries (USA, Ireland, UK, The Netherlands, Sweden, and Greece), the chapters in this book are in deep conversation with each other, offering multiple alternative takes on the issue of what should academics do with conspiracy theories. Together, the book embodies several bold and compelling provocations to dealing differently with conspiracy theories. This timely volume introduces perspectives of scholars representing media studies, anthropology, psychology and sociology and discusses case studies concerning politics, health, environment and security. It will be a key resource for researchers, scholars and practitioners engaged in these fields and will also appeal to anyone interested in conspiracy theories and other related phenomena such as disinformation or fake news. • - A Sociology of Biological Translation
    av Sarah Franklin
    565 - 1 895,-

This assessment of Britain's influential 14 day rule governing embryo research explores how and why it became the de facto global standard for research into human fertilization and embryology, arguing that its influence and stability offers valuable lessons for successful biological translation. One of the most important features of the 14 day rule, the authors claim, is its reliance on sociological as well as ethical, legislative, regulatory and scientific principles. The careful integration of social expectations and perceptions, as well as sociological definitions of the law and morality, into the development of a robust legislative infrastructure of 'human fertilization and embryology', enabled what has come to be known as the Warnock Consensus - a degree public acceptance that has enabled successive parliamentary approval for controversial areas of scientific research in the UK, such as stem cell research and mitochondrial donation, for over 30 years. These important sociological insights are increasingly relevant to new biotranslational challenges such as human germline gene editing and the use of AI assisted technologies in human reproduction. As the legislation around the 14 day rule begins to be reviewed worldwide, the important lessons we can learn from its global and enduring will apply not only to future legislation governing embryo research, but to the future of biological translation. An important volume for those interested in reproductive studies, biogovernance and biological translation, it is suitable for researchers, clinicians and students in medicine, biosciences, sociology and science and technology studies.

  • - Oppression and Privilege in America
    av Diane Emling
    595 - 2 029,-

Invisible, intractable and deadly--such is the nature of institutional racism. But are there mitigating actions that society could take against them? Diane Carpenter Emling explores this question in Institutional Racism and Restorative Justice: Oppression and Privilege in America. Moving beyond the immediate sources and consequences of prejudice, racism and inequality, to thoroughly assess approaches to restorative justice, Emling details America's complex history of racism, demonstrating how it becomes embedded in society through land ownership, housing, education, health care, employment, public services and criminal justice. For each of these issues, she suggests actions to restore justice. But societies don't operate institution by institution, and extraordinary changes will be necessary to address systemic racism. Directed at college undergraduate students, Emling's book offers a valued contribution for teaching courses in African American studies, sociology, economics, politics and American history. Written in a comprehensive and accessible style, this book offers a much-needed perspective in the literature on institutional racism. This new edition includes important accounts and analysis of the political and social upheavals following the Georgy Floyd killing and subsequent demonstrations, the cultural battle over Critical Race Theory, and foregrounding of race in American politics and institutions.

  • - Strengths, Limitations and Future Directions
    av Andrew Koleros
    609,-

For over fifty years, evaluators have used theories of change to articulate the causal logic underpinning how an intervention is intended to bring about a desired change. From its origins in program evaluation, the approach has been adopted more widely for purposes from programme design to programme management. As theories of change continue to be used for multiple purposes, it is an opportune moment for the evaluation community - where the approach originated - to provide their perspective on the strengths and limitations of the approach and its future directions. To provide these perspectives, we asked nearly thirty of the world's leading evaluators and program theorists to provide a short essay on the past, present and future of theories of change. This book presents their insights organized into five main themes: the use of theories of change in broader public policy contexts; using theories of change to establish causality; developing theories of change reflective of multiple stakeholder perspectives; using theories of change to understand wider societal change processes; and applying theories of change approaches for multiple purposes. By sharing these diverse perspectives, the book aims to both provide evaluators and emerging programme theorists with critical perspectives to inform future practice.

  • - The Analyst's Necessary Vertigo
    av Jade McGleughlin
    539 - 1 965,-

In a series of overlapping clinical essays--sometimes highly personal, sometimes bristling with theory, sometimes employing experimental writing--Jade McGleughlin upends the ways we tell a psychoanalytic story.Tracing the evolution of her thinking, the collection grapples with the problem of engaging patients when verbal representation fails. To do this, McGleughlin takes us inside some of her richest, most surprising encounters with patients who have suffered severe trauma, leading to a breach in the experience of self. McGleughlin imagines how to meet patients in the breach. She then brings us along, requiring the analyst's intense personal struggle to find and share the patients' experiences of liminality, of terror, of non-existence--to tolerate the vertigo of deep engagement with the other. Rather than leading with authority and the illusion of an autonomous self, McGleughlin offers storytelling that mirrors the work; her enactive writing dares to replicate the unsettling experience of the breach and invites readers to experience not only seeing but being seen. Drawing from film, literature, and art, including her own paintings, as well as extensive clinical experience, this book is essential reading for all psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and anyone wanting to understand how communication in a clinical space can transcend the verbal.

  • - Volume I
    av Matthew Rowley
    649 - 2 049,-

This first volume of the Global Sourcebook in Protestant Political Thought provides a window into the early Protestant world, and the ways in which Protestants wrestled with politics and religion in the wake of the Reformation. This period saw political authorities and church hierarchies challenged and defended by scholars, clerics, and lay people alike. The volume engages the full spectrum of Protestants, with reference to theology, geography, ethnicity, historical importance, socio-economic background and gender. This diversity highlights how Protestants felt pulled towards differing political positions and used several maps to chart their course--conscience, custom, history, ecclesiastical tradition and the laws of God, nature, nation or community. On most important issues, Protestants lined up on opposing sides. Additionally, Catholic and Eastern Orthodox political thought, as well as interactions with Jewish and Muslim texts and thinkers, profoundly influenced different directions taken in the history of Protestant Political Thought. Even as our own time is fraught with deep disagreement and political polarisation, so too was early modern Europe, and we might read it in the anxieties, uncertainties, hopes and expectations that the sources vividly express. This sourcebook will enrich both research and classroom teaching, whether geared towards general political or religious history, or towards more specialized courses on colonialism, warfare, gender, racism or toleration.

  • - How Government, Industry and Science Share Knowledge to Overcome Global Challenges
    av Fred Bakker
    525 - 1 895,-

The world is at a critical juncture where our industrial and economic principles have to be reshaped. Three major transitions are underway: towards the use of alternative energy sources, towards carbon-neutral and sustainable production, and towards digitalized manufacture and distribution. This book explores the ways in which these transitions are taking place in Europe. No single institution can bring about the necessary changes: a productive cooperation between government, industry and (technological) knowledge centres has to be established. In this insightful book, Fred Bakker paints a vivid picture of a wide range of European businesses, industries and research institutes, joining forces to further the transitions. This process of 'Sharing Brainpower' proves to be a unique European strength that needs to be recognised and furthered. Structured in five parts, the book provides a thumbnail sketch of Europe's goals and methods, through a bird's eye view across current initiatives towards the three transitions, to a concluding part in which the workings of Sharing Brainpower are described in terms of a set of 'lessons learned'. It shows how top-down initiatives and the bottom-up approach reinforce one another, with case stories that prove that diversity does not have to mean fragmentation; it is a source of strength.Policy makers, industry advisers, board members, chief innovation officers and students will find much to inspire them and their work in this book.A website with cases, updates and more information is available at sharingbrainpower.eu

This book showcases the unique shape of urban development that spread out from the Mediterranean across Europe during the Roman Empire, offering a fresh perspective on the cities and territories of the Roman West. With the expansion of Rome came a particular form of social organisation: the Roman city. This book provides a basic introduction to Roman cities, not through the lens of architecture and urbanism, but from a social, legal, cultural, spatial, and functional perspective. It focuses on the Roman civitas - the city and its territory - as the spatial model of Roman colonialism and expansion. Exploring primarily the cities and territories of the Western Empire, such as the Iberian Peninsula, Gaul, and Britain, González-Villaescusa revives from their ruins those central places that facilitated the circulation of people, goods, and information, and created a large urban network and unified imperial territory.Cities and Territories of the Western Roman Empire: 4th Century BC to the 3rd Century AD is suitable for school and university students, as well as the general reader interested in the subject of Roman cities in the Western Empire.

In Heart at the Center: An Educator's Guide to Sustaining Love, Hope, and Community Through Nonviolence Pedagogy, high school teacher Mike Tinoco examines what it means to reimagine classrooms and schools as spaces that humanize, resist violence and injustice, and center love.Offering both a framework and a set of practices that are grounded in different nonviolence traditions, Heart at the Center asks readers to consider what a pedagogy of nonviolence looks like, sounds like, and feels like in the classroom.Written with warmth, expertise, and humility, Mike Tinoco invites us into his classroom, drawing on stories from his own life and powerful examples from civil rights movement leaders to explore questions such as: ● How do we create classrooms and schools that are grounded in needs and match our vision for the kind of world we dream of?● How can we challenge conventional classroom management practices, welcome conflict, and truly nurture relationships with and amongst our students to foster positive peace?● How can we embed love in our curriculum and be inclusive of our students' lives, centering community, healing, and justice?● How can we slow down and take care of ourselves without compromising the urgency to fight for justice? When can voluntary suffering meet our needs and empower us?● How can educators navigate conflict, build community with one another, and create their own professional development opportunities that support collective care?Heart at the Center is a book for educators who believe that a different kind of classroom, a different kind of school, and a different kind of world are possible.
