This volumes re-examines the notion of the East Asian peace, arguing that it requires updating for the current and near-future context of US-Chinese rivalry.The 'East Asian peace' refers to the remarkable change in conflict levels in eastern Eurasia over the past eighty years or even the past 130 years or so. Prior to the late 1970s, East Asia was regarded as the most conflictual region on the planet. Although insurgencies have continued in places such as Myanmar, Thailand, and the Philippines, after the 1980s East and Southeast Asia became one of the world's least conflictual regions. Geopolitics and economic development worked hand in hand to reduce conflict in the region and, in this respect, the East Asian peace has been a confluential peace. The general problem with a confluential peace is that the factors that shape it evolve over time, and the specific circumstances in question seem to be evolving in a different direction, with East Asia shaping up to be the most central locale of the contest between US and Chinese hegemony, both regionally and perhaps globally. This book argues that the idea of the East Asian peace now requires adjustment to the current and near future context. The more general arguments presented here focus on alternative interpretations of how regional peace and order should be interpreted, while the more specific arguments involve interpretations of Chinese and other countries' behaviour in the context of the heightened rivalry between China and the United States.This book will be of much interest to students of East Asian politics, peace studies, foreign policy and International Relations.

This book addresses the complex socioeconomic situation in the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, in the context of the labour market, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.It analyses and assesses the measures which influence the process of Ukrainian war refugees' adaptation to the Polish labour market, surveying the engagement of local actors, such as employers, labour market institutions and nongovernmental organisations. It examines the impact of the refugee crisis on this market, as well as mobilisation of various groups of actors in order to support this specific group of migrants in adapting to life in Poland. The authors argue that this phenomenon of the migration of war refugees confirms the thesis that political instability can be a factor in pushing people abroad as equally important as inequalities in prosperity.The book identifies the characteristic features of the stream of war refugees from Ukraine as a category of cross-border flows. Before the Russian attack, the influx of Ukrainians to Poland was due mainly to economic pressures, whereas, after the outbreak of war, Ukrainians' motivation to cross the border with Poland as well as the structure of this migration stream have radically changed. The event of art is thus an encounter both with a sensuous object and with ourselves, exposing us as subjects strangely susceptible to being moved.The 21st-century European thinkers elucidated here describe a theory of the aesthetic subject: Irigaray articulates the basic outlines of a subject ill at ease with itself. Henrik Ibsen's plays were written at a critical juncture in late nineteenth-century European culture. In Rosmersholm, degeneration is reconfigured as an overcultivation that eventually makes a family unfit for life. In Hedda Gabler, meanwhile, Hedda, having been for all practical purposes raised as a man, has come to think of herself as one, a circumstance which informs her final decision to end her life - her final degeneration. This book analyses how the Iraqi city of Fallujah became registered as a setting for military heroics in American memory.In 2004, the US military conducted two disastrous assaults in Fallujah, Iraq. More than 1,000 citizens were killed, and, according to the military's own estimate, upwards of 200,000 people were displaced because of the violence. Yet, despite this human catastrophe, the kind of information that emerged in the public domain during the battle foregrounded the soldier experience in war while effacing the destruction of Iraqi bodies. This tendency to foreground the soldier body is a direct result of the military's intervention into what they conceptualize as the 'information environment'. This book draws from the second assault in Fallujah as a case study to explicate the military's investment in this perspectival space, which is both a consequence of the mediatization of contemporary war and of the need to influence knowledge considered unfavorable to military operations. In short, the military enlists the media into their targeting process to produce information that is then deployed as persuasive force to modify the beliefs of specific target populations. When the cultural texts produced by the media are remediated in the public domain after war, they can be thought of as martial constructs because they originated during war through the military's systemized attempt to influence knowledge. That is, these texts trace to a specific battlefield objective. This book reframes the notion of propaganda as a generalized public relations strategy to a more acute and coordinated attempt to decontextualize specific knowledge in the information environment.This book will be of much interest to students of media and communication studies, war studies, memory studies and International Relations.

This book provides a comprehensive account of the use of airpower in the first year of the Ukraine conflict.Owing to the need to avoid direct war with Russia, NATO did not create a No-Fly Zone over Ukraine and the initial contest for air superiority ended in an uneasy state of mutual denial. Nevertheless, Russia's bombardment using long-range missiles meant that the need to provide Ukraine with effective ground-based air defense systems and fighter jets became a topic of public debate. The rationale of this book, therefore, is to provide an analysis of why all these facets of the air war over Ukraine during the first year of the conflict played out as they did. While NATO airpower doctrine prescribes the destruction of an enemy state's Integrated Air Defense System (IADS) and air force in the opening phase of a conflict to gain air superiority, and then employ decisive firepower and surveillance over the ground war, neither side has been able to achieve this. Western doctrine holds that control of the air is a vital and decisive factor in any modern war, but the war in Ukraine has largely been decided by grinding land combat. An overarching theme of the book, therefore, is to explain the Russian failure to achieve air superiority, and how this fact shaped the subsequent employment of airpower and the broader course of the first year of the war in a way that no one had predicted before the invasion.This book will be of much interest to students of air power, military and strategic studies, Russian and eastern European politics, and International Relations.
