Originally published in 1961, this book became widely used as a textbook, as an important source of primary data on British government expenditure statistics and as the point of departure for further empirical and analytical studies of the behaviour of governments. The book was recognised as one of the formative influences in the development of a positive theory of government expenditure which sought to explain the size and structure of the system of public finance rather than justify it.

Originally published in 1959, this book critically examines, in the light of numerous research, both the relation between unacceptable behaviour and economic and social status and the validity of several popular hypotheses of the 20th Century: that anti-social attitudes are due to lack of maternal affection in infancy, or that problem families produce problem families generation after generation. This book examines the actorness of the European Parliament (EP) and its roles in global health. In doing so, it appreciates to what extent this democratically elected entity can be considered as a global health actor.Applying an original analytical framework to measure actorness, the book assesses the EP's capacity to act regarding five major global health issues including the pandemic response, access to essential medicines in developing countries, international trade and global health, medical research and development in the field of poverty-related and neglected diseases (PRNDs), and global health governance. Whether Britain is "apart from or a part of Europe" (D. Abulafia) has gained significance in recent years. This book compares the life courses of forced migrants in two of the world's most important transit countries: Turkey and Mexico. It examines the local, regional, and global contexts of their experiences, trajectories, and biographical projects, caught between return, stay, and forward movement.Forced migration has increased rapidly around the world in recent years, with Mexico and Turkey experiencing particularly high numbers of migrants, as conflict, violence, authoritarian regimes, environmental disasters, economic instability, lack of opportunity, and generalized violence have driven people to leave their homes in search of a better life. With a special focus on organized violence, this book analyzes the specific impact of organized violence on the trajectories and biographies of forced migrants, situating these life courses in the political, economic, cultural, and social contexts of the countries of origin (Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria; El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras) and in the country of transit (Turkey and Mexico). Whilst there is an extensive body of research exploring the barriers to gender equality and female empowerment in high-income states, there are far fewer systematic analyses within lower-income settings. This book draws on extensive empirical data to analyse gender mainstreaming and gender transformative actions in Tanzanian higher education.The book maps the practical landscape of gender mainstreaming across 14 universities in Tanzania, and the theoretical landscape of African theories of masculinities and femininities underpinning educational institutions and practices. It then assesses the Gender Awareness and Transformation through Education project, which was designed to support the development of gender expertise and capacities in research and education at one specific institution, across both its administrative and academic units. Current and future academics at Dar es Salaam University College of Education were trained in gender-based research and education, and a strategic plan was developed to guide in the establishment of a Gender Research Centre that will provide gender expertise in research and teaching to the College; and, over time, to other HEIs nationally and regionally. The market evolutions allow us to look at these structures as temporary settlements characterised by a low-density dwelling and a close connection with natural elements and the landscape.This new and different point of view is sustained by the tendency of outdoor tourism to go in the direction of temporary villages, and this tendency is directly related to "time" and "landscape". The landscape is the reason why the campsite is settled. The time is linked to the holiday season timing. Today, both are greatly influenced by introducing the "maxi-caravan". This removable living unit can be placed on the empty pitch, occupying the landscape without ruing the soil. By the settlement of maxi-caravans, the campsite is transformed from an empty landscape with tents to a temporary settlement, whose timing is divided between the seasonal timing of the campsite and the "timing" of the product and whose landscape is organised by the relation with the prevalent landscape and the internal one. The book's core defines the outdoor facility structure, using Italy as the main case study. To identify design strategies, the book analyses temporary settlement examples (quick time) and projects from historic outdoor tourism (medium time). Finally, the last chapter reflects on open-air accommodation facilities by showing their applicability in the different contexts of the Refugee camps (long time). The aim of this research is to enhance the theme of open-air accommodation facilities, highlighting the need to equalise the study of temporary settlements with that of permanent settlements. It will be of interest to researchers and students of planning, landscape and tourism.

But in an age of post-truth, the only robust answer to relativism lies in fact in reappraisal of perspectivism. This book explains how facilitative mediators, those without material leverage, contribute to progress in peace negotiations.While existing theories of mediation have offered suggestions about what a mediator should get parties to do to reach agreement, the puzzle that has remained is: how does a mediator get parties to do what is prescribed? The book argues that a communication perspective is key to understanding facilitative mediation and that framing is the main mechanism by which facilitative mediation functions. Based on an empirical analysis of the United Nations mediation in El Salvador between 1990 and 1992, the work breaks new ground by uncovering three underlying mechanisms that explain how a mediator can get their framing adopted by the negotiating parties and thereby advance the negotiations. The book offers a novel theory of facilitative mediation as framing and an innovative methodological approach that focuses on negotiation impasses to study the process of how negotiations progress. Traditional welfare economics works with the assumption of the fully rational economic agent (homo economicus) whose preferences are fixed: that is, they are not influenced by their economic environment. To the contrary, this book presents a theory of welfare economics that maintains the principles of normative individualism while allowing for adaptive or changeable preferences.Why do economists talk of preferences? In this book, Carl Christian von Weizsäcker shows that the concept is intimately related to freedom of action. The concept of preferences is the mode by which normative economics introduces the idea of freedom or liberty into its theory of human interaction. Moreover, economic research of recent decades has provided a large amount of experimental and other empirical findings - e.g. the work on bounded rationality - which contradicts the assumption of fixed preferences. This book argues that this large body of findings is consistent with the hypothesis of adaptive preferences. This, together with the proposition that adaptive preferences allow a generalization of traditional welfare economics, has implications for policy applications of behavioral economics based on "normative individualism". Normative individualism is an approach which intrinsically connects with the value of liberty or freedom.
