From rugged Japanese firemen''s ceremonial robes and austere rural work-wear to colorful, delicately-patterned cotton kimonos, this lavishly illustrated volume explores Japan''s rich tradition of textiles.Textiles are an eloquent form of cultural expression and of great importance in the daily life of a people, as well as in their rituals and ceremonies. The traditional clothing and fabrics featured in this book were made and used in the islands of the Japanese archipelago between the late 18th and the mid 20th century. The Thomas Murray collection featured in this book includes daily dress, work-wear, and festival garb and follows the Arts and Crafts philosophy of the Mingei Movement, which saw that modernization would leave behind traditional art forms such as the hand-made textiles used by country people, farmers, and fisherman. It presents subtly patterned cotton fabrics, often indigo dyed from the main islands of Honshu and Kyushu, along with garments of the more remote islands: the graphic bark cloth, nettle fiber, and fish skin robes of the aboriginal Ainu in Hokkaido and Sakhalin to the north, and the brilliantly colored cotton kimonos of Okinawa to the far south. Numerous examples of these fabrics, photographed in exquisite detail, offer insight into Japan''s complex textile history as well as inspiration for today''s designers and artists. This volume explores the range and artistry of the country''s tradition of fiber arts and is an essential resource for anyone captivated by the Japanese aesthetic.

Now available again, this visually stunning collection of Gustav Klimt''s landscape paintings brings to light a lesser-known aspect of the Viennese painter''s oeuvre. While Gustav Klimt is largely revered for his opulent, symbolladen portraits of the Viennese bourgeoisie, these works were just one aspect of his artistic expression. His landscapes represent an important facet of his career and are a valuable contribution to the school of European nature painting. For many years the artist travelled to the Austrian and Italian countryside during the summer, where he took advantage of the extraordinary light and spectacular hues to paint and sketch landscapes. Among the most exquisite of Klimt''s landscapes are those in which he experimented with composition and style. Accompanied by scholarly essays, the images reproduced in this book comprise all extant landscapes from this brilliant artist, proving that his mastery extends beyond portraiture and revealing themes that appeared throughout his life''s work.

This book opens with an introduction to the relationship between Duchamp and Stauffer. It features brilliant reproductions of Duchamp''s most renowned works, including Bottlerack, the painting study for Chocolate Grinder, No 2, and the window object La Bagarre d''Austerlitz. Featuring ancient Greek and Roman sculpture, this book explores the history and legacy of ancient statues of Olympian gods. For people in ancient Greece, ornately and imposingly fashioned statues depicting the gods symbolized power or ideal beauty. During the Roman Empire, when sculptors copied Greek models, the sculptures conveyed an aura of education and scholarship. This volume showcases antique sculptures that represent the most important Greek Olympian gods. Culled from the collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, one of the most important collections of antiquities, this book features objects ranging from the 6th century B.C.E. to the 4th century C.E. The sculptures express the Greek ideal of beauty and the remarkable creative powers of these artists as well as the evolving ways gods were portrayed--from solemn and religiously formal to natural and graceful figures.
