Hadidian Upon my return in September of 1973 from my sabbatical year in Beirut, where I had time to think through the initial plan of publishing dissertations, I approached the president of a local commercial printing company who also happened to be a friend. He, after several days of consideration, gave me the green light to go ahead and plan publications of theological monographs at the company's expense. I served as general editor fully responsible in all decisions to negotiate with authors, translators and editors of collected essays on the possible publication of their works. Thus BULLETIN ABTAPL VOL.2 N0.7 13 MARCH, 1990 in 1974 the Pickwick-Morcroft Company began to publish monographs under the name of Pickwick Press.> Dikran Y. This volume contains, in English translation, the six articles which appeared in 'Languages' 22 (1971). In addition, Corina Galland has an introduction to the method of A. J. Greimas. A 74-page glossary of formalist and structural terms has been added.

This collection of essays examines how God''s justice and mercy intersect in the lives of individuals and their communities, with a view to the establishment of personal and social well-being in the world. The authors, drawn from England and Australia, approach the theme from a variety of methodological and interdisciplinary perspectives. Theological, exegetical, historical, healthcare, moral, and visual arts approaches are brought to bear in an investigation relevant for the identity and mission of the church in a world characterized by cycles of revenge, the perpetration of injustice, and the marginalization and persecution of various ethnic groups. In recent years, scholars have explored anew the interface between the early Christian movements and the Roman Empire. Once thought to be quietistic, the early Christian movements turn out to have been critical of the Empire and significantly counterimperial. This collection of essays in honor of Robert Brawley turns the spotlight on Luke-Acts. The soundings taken here disclose deeper anti-imperial rhetoric than previously thought. In brazen and subtle ways, Luke-Acts displays an alternative realm of peace and justice inaugurated by Jesus under the God of Israel. The essays in this volume will lead you to hear Luke-Acts in fresh ways.

Negotiating Identity addresses the missiological problem of why the Hakka Chinese Christian community in Taiwan is so small despite evangelistic efforts there for more than 140 years. Christofferson explores the tensions between being Hakka and being Christian in northwestern Taiwan and discusses what both Hakka non-Christians and Christians are doing and saying in the context of these tensions. This ethnographic study uses the lens of social constructionism and consequently offers an example of how social science scholarship can help missionaries and other Christian workers to gain significant insights into the thoughts, feelings, and actions of those living in their ministry locations. Of interest is Christofferson''s conclusion that the missiological perspective which puts a primary focus on ministering to a "people group" is inadequate for explaining and engaging the complexities encountered in many ministry settings. He suggests that an awareness of the way people are negotiating their identities can help Christian workers to better understand and strategically engage people in a variety of ministry contexts throughout the world.

Faithfulness and the Purpose of Hebrews offers fresh answers to several unresolved questions by employing that branch of social psychology known as social identity theory. Who were the addressees? With the categories of social identity theory, this study argues that the addressees arranged the world into two groups: ""us"" and ""them."" They understood their group, the ""us,"" to be the ""faithful."" They understood ""them"" (a symbolic outgroup of ""all others"") to be the ""unfaithful."" Faithfulness, then, is the primary identity descriptor for the addressees and plays an essential role thoughout the text. How did the addressees understand the faithfulness of Jesus? The author of Hebrews describes the faithfulness of Jesus as ""prototypical."" The faithfulness of all others is described in relation to Jesus'' faith, and together they are integrated into an ongoing narrative of faithfulness. What is the meaning of the promised ""rest""? Utilizing a model of present temporal orientation, the study interprets the dynamic relationship between the ""antecedent"" faithfulness of many witnesses and the ""forthcoming"" promised rest of the addressees. The addressees of Hebrews were encouraged to ""understand their futures by looking to the past.""What is the purpose of the text? Social identity theorists explain that groups with a negative social identity have two broad options: social mobility or social change. The study concludes that the author of Hebrews provides internal constraints that are meant to prevent social mobility. The author utilizes social creativity (an aspect of social change) to provide a positive social identity for the addressees.
