Spearmint - "Sweeping the Nation" (Hitback records). Email to mail@spearmint.net 11.30 21/12/13.Hi,I've just finished the first draft of my book about the five years I spent promoting various genres of local music during 2002/2007 in and around Chorley, Blackburn and Preston, Lancashire. It champions all the bands and artists that never got to make it further than their hometown fan base...and a few that did. I found your track "Sweeping the Nation" on a Rough Trade CD and have been recommending it to anyone I meet/know as the best song I have ever heard that sums up what my book is about...I am 51 and Northern Soul was an influence on my growing up and appreciation of musical styles. How clever of you to combine the classic back beat sample with a list of the bands you knew about that never made it and then bound it all together with driving guitars and the thumping chorus of: "I've been wasting my life I've finally realised I've wasted so much time....!My book has made me understand that I didn't waste my life because I followed my dream, stuck to what I believed in and have some wonderful memories. I know what Mr Bradshaw meant in his words to Shirley as everything I wanted in life has come true! Thanks again and maybe I'll get to one of your gigs in the New Year."I wanna hear you on that!"John Winstanley.About the author.John Winstanley was born in Okehampton, Devon in 1962. His parents were originally from the North West of England and they moved to Euxton, Lancashire in the early 1970's. John went to Balshaws High School and Runshaw College in Leyland before starting his career in Preston. Married to Helen he lives with their daughters Hannah and Holly in Withnell, Nr Chorley. When not going out to watch live music John enjoys writing about it and looks forwards to retirement at the family's favourite holiday destination - Benahavis, Costa Del Sol, Spain.

S'funny how you never laugh at the time though, innit? The first and last lines in John's story - a personal and encouraging story of a "repaired" person, who, having suffered a brain haemorrhage in 1978, had numerous brain operations . . . and then he met Lindsay. "What luck that we survived, what luck that we met, what luck that we fell in love?"Every day someone gets a head injury and life changes. This book offers encouragement to everybody to put pen to paper.

Tommy Banks...Is this a story that is any different to the plethora of footballers' autobiographies that cram the bookshelves of the High Street retailers? The reality is that this is a story of a very talented, very proud and extremely honourable and dignified man.A man who recognised the wrongs of the professional footballers' contracts in the post-war era and, in his own words and dialect, was determined to "purrit reet."This down to earth charismatic Farnworth lad played an integral and pivotal role in changing the way footballers were treated and paid. There is absolutely no doubt that the celebrity footballers we recognise today bear no comparison to the men that Tommy took up the cause for. However they would do well to read, recognise and, most importantly, respect the part that Tommy and several others played in changing the landscape of the present modern day footballer.Tommy Banks...family man, coal miner, hod carrier, Bolton Wanderer and England footballer, a warm hearted man with a bulldog spirit and a builder of dreams.Ah'm tellin' thee is a humble, honest and heartfelt account of a local lad made good.Tommy was astute and quick, wingers didn't like playing against him, he was belligerent, he would clatter them if required and played mind games with them.Francis Lee Today's multi-millionaire footballers owe a great debt to the son ofFarnworth who might well have been formed out of the very coal pitswhich featured in that area as he was granite like, a great player, greatperson and a great character.from the Foreword by Gordon TaylorChief Executive of the Professional Footballers Association I admire him, a gifted footballer he was also a leader, you could hear him all over the field roaring out instructions and praise.Dennis StevensHe had a lot to say on and off the field but knew his football and was a master of his craft. If you had any soft spot in your make up he'd exploit it, few if any got the better of him.Every time I see him I always try to think of something fun to say but he always beats me to it, a lovely man.Bobby Charlton

"Isabella Lövin writes with great passion and clarity about the crisis facing global fish stocks. Exposing the weak short termism of governments, and the persistent failure of the EU fisheries policy to act on the clear science, her warning is unequivocal: act soon or lose vast sections of this vital source of food forever. But it's not all gloom and doom. She is clear that this is a solvable problem - and that until governments legislate more responsibly, consumer action is the best means for bringing about change. A compelling book, that all those who care about the future of our oceans will want to read."HUGH FERNLEY-WHITTINGSTALL, HUGH'S FISH FIGHT"Who would have thought that Sweden, of all places, would have allowed its fisheries to reach the sorry state documented in Isabella Lövin's essential book? We are surprised and dismayed, but should we be? What Ms. Lövin demonstrates is that the public's notion about fisheries being benign stakeholders of the sea is deeply flawed. Rather, fisheries, as presently 'managed', are actively destroying marine ecosystems and public resources with the financial and administrative support of governments.Ms. Lövin uses the Baltic, and the eel and cod as her main examples, yet this bok is not about Sweden and the Baltic - it is about a mindset prevailing throughout Europe and in much of the world, and which we desperately need to change. This book will make you want to join the battle."DR. DANIEL PAULY, FISHERIES CENTRE, UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLOMBIA"Silent Seas is the Da Vinci Code of fisheries policy. A page turner where the same question keeps turning over and over inside your head: Who is the killer? Who killed our seas? "STEFAN NYSTRÖM, SWEDISH FISHERIES MAGAZINE"Read Silent Seas. Then contact your MP!"GUNVOR HILLDEN, UPSALA NYA NEWSPAPERSilent seas was first published in Swedish in 2007, and was soon awarded no less than 14 prizes, among which the prestigious Great Journalism Award, the Investigative Journalism Award, the Environmental Journalism of the Year Award and the Baltic Sea Award. Isabella Lövin became a candidate for the Swedish Greens in the elections for the European parliament in 2009, and is now actively working to reform the EU common fisheries policy. The present English edition has been updated, and a new foreword has been added in 2012.

This book is a practical guide for clowning. It is filled with tools and techniques that will help you find your clown and become more open to your creative sources. The author examines and makes use of the powerful qualities that children possess: imagination, innocence, purity, spontaneity and lust for life. A clown is playful and optimistic. From behind world's smallest mask, the red nose, he invites people to drop their own masks and show their true selves. Being very sensitive, he is able to touch them deeply. This so-called contact clown wants to make a connection from heart to heart. Kurstjens is convinced that clowns can play a crucial role in our society: they can bring people together through their open communication. This richly illustrated book comes with 25 practical exercises, and provides useful information about essential themes in life: setting boundaries, overcoming emotional blockades, and daring to be vulnerable. It is not only meant to inspire clowns and clowning instructors, but also coaches, (communication) trainers, and everyone else who is interested in personal development. Ton Kurstjens (born in the Netherlands, 1959) started as an improvising clown in 1983. He played in Duo Het Elftal and Duo Biek and currently he conducts clowning courses for individuals and workshops for businesspeople. He also directs the clowning theatre performance Met de Neus op de Planken (literally: With your Nose on Stage) and he supports clowns and clowning groups.

  • - Torpoint's War Diary 1939-46
    av Joe P. Plant
    309,-

Little, if anything, is known about Torpoint's passage through the years of World War II; in fact it is a time forgotten. This book goes some way to describe what actually did happen. It is not about one story, but about many individual stories, threaded together to record and validate one person's recollection together with others, to give a true account of the incident in question, which caused death and injuries to its civilian residents; also the fate of its servicemen who died in battle throughout the world. Due to censorship, the taking of photographs was not permitted. However, during research for the book, a few did come to light, including German Reconnaissance photos identifying Torpoint as a target and American GIs leaving on 1st June 1944 bound for the D-Day Landings - a truthful illustration of the times and incidents that did occur. This book also identifies a complete list of Torpoint's War fatalities, their courage, dedication and sense of sacrifice, which brought about their early demise. It is a chronicle of a short period in the town's history that students will learn from and that, for others, will hopefully rekindle lost family memories. "I can only congratulate Joe on a quite remarkable achievement. This book will provide a permanent insight to this and future generations of the dark days our predecessors had to endure, the contribution they made to eventual victory and the freedoms we enjoy today." Richard Carew Pole. Bt. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Joe Plant was born in Crystal Palace London. During the London Blitz of March 1941 his family was bombed out so he has personal experience of being involved with incidents of falling bombs during the Blitz. He travelled north to Lancashire to seek refuge, returning before the end of the war to the devastation of London. In 1955 he was conscripted as a National Serviceman and served in Malaya during the Emergency (War). Demobed in 1957, in 1959 he married his wife Annette. From their marriage they have three children and seven grandchildren. In 1963 through a car accident Joe was was left partially sighted. He trained as a Design Draftsman, had to change his profession to become a Purchasing Manager, which took him to many foreign countries, before he was seconded to Devenport Dockyard in 1987. He moved to Torpoint where the family settled. In 1997, he became the Chairman of the re-formed Torpoint branch of the Royal British Legion.
