What's This Book About?Through a series of unlikely events, Justice Miller, a university professor and former hockey star, discovers profound secrets about the fundamental nature of human civilization, the perils we face, and unexpected prospects for a brighter future. Not one to shy away from a fight, she and a group of activists provoke establishment adversaries as they pursue new solutions and strategies to confront our social and ecological problems. In the process, they launch a bold campaign to usher in a new era focused on greater interdependence and justice. Since humans first emerged on Earth two hundred thousand years ago with our unique abilities and characteristics, we have been on a journey toward this moment. We now face a crossroads and urgent choice: to live together interdependently or die separately. There is no salvation in isolation, no scientific breakthrough that can save us, no amount of money or weaponry or border fortifications that can shield us. Caring about others is the only way to sustainability, social justice, and prosperity. To some, this kind of change may seem idealistic or impossible or partisan or altruistic or even inconsistent with human naturebut they'd be wrong. It's happening right now, all around us, and when you know how to see it, you'll see it everywhere. But more importantly, when you know how to see it, you'll see opportunities everywhere. Not just opportunities to survivebut opportunities to thrive.

The Civilized Rats is a novel that tells the story of a tribe of rats that came together to establish an organized humanlike society under the inspiration of Nunuto, the city rat. In one of their annual tribal gatherings, they adopted the idea and started a kingdom of rats modeled along that of humans. The civilization, as they called it, blossomed. Under the inspirational Nunuto, the rats raised and trained an army that they named ratmy. They attacked humans, killed a snake, killed a cat, and chased away another deadly snake that swallowed rats. However, when Nunuto died of a snakebite, there arose a leadership crisis in the ratmy. This led to the breakup of the kingdom as intractable civil wars set in. Splinter ratmy groups emerged here and there and went violent. Societal problems like violence, stealing, robbery, rape, murder, wars, banditry, looting, fights for supremacy, and other problems akin to those found in human societies set in. The disunity among rats became worse than it was at the beginning. The kingdom collapsed, thus ending their dream of an organized society. One comes to the last but very brief chapter, only to discover that the entire story was a mere dream by an overfed rat that fell asleep in a kitchen.

My first view of Colorado was from the arms of my maternal grandmother, Mary Clarissa Cade, when I was eight months old. She brought me to Pueblo while my mother hopefully recovered from typhoid fever in far-off Arkansas. Two months later, Mary realized this little girl would be her responsibility from then on, and already Little Fern, as I was called, was determined to call her grandmother "e;Mama."e; My view changed as I graduated from my baby crib to following her around the garden in the backyard and learning to identify creeping things along the path. My grandfather, JW Cade, taught me to be seen and not heard and go to bed "e;with the chickens,"e; which I cheerfully ignored. My uncles and aunts and cousins taught me to feel accepted and honor my parents example of love. As I grew, I realized that Pikes Peak was a beautiful skyline, and my tree swing that hung from the backyard elm tree was a place to not only swing but read and sing and dream. The last view I treasured, even when I finally returned to Arkansas, was at night with the star-studded sky above just as in Colorado, where I dreamed I saw my parents and other dear ones above them looking down at me. Along with the music I learned there, I knew there were angels singing and watching over me, awaiting the time when we would all finally see home.

I would like to share my thoughts, my feelings about God's plan for Jamel. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of Jamel. The attorney really told me what happened that night. Jamel and Marlo just got off from work, and Marlo's aunt's boyfriend came to pick Marlo up to pick up his kids from his aunt's house, to take them to his wife's house, who he is separated from. Jamel wanted to go just for the ride. They picked up the kids and headed back to Woodstock to drop the kids and Jamel off. Reginald missed the turn-off and decided to stop on the highway and back up to go through the little intersection. A four-wheel drive came around and hit the right side of the car, and there was a U-Haul truck following it and ran into the back of the car, where Jamel, and Marlo's two kids were.God blessed where it was so quiet. The nurse said Jamel didn't feel a thing. His neck was broken first, where he couldn't feel anything from the neck down, whereas his chest was crushed, starting from the back to the front. Marlo said somebody said Jamel was still alive when they were trying to get him out. After they did, Jamel died. The doctor said, in his report, Jamel died quietly. He felt nothing. I sometimes think of this, but when I do, this is what the Lord lets me see. I see Jamel in this accident, but two angels were right there waiting and took Jamel by his two hands, and they all flew away together, up to heaven. Now, when I think of Jamel, I see him with a glorified body, happy. And when I pray, God reminds me that Jamel is okay.

Progress...Not So MuchIn times past, the shoemaker, or cobbler, was as important as a cooper (barrel maker), blacksmith, lumberman, or cattleman. In fact, maybe he was more important since all the other trades needed his services to perform theirs. Everyone needed shoes, but where would the lumberman be without proper boots, belts, and suspenders? How about the chaps the range riders used to protect their legs from briars and thistles? Halters, bridles, reigns, buggy whips, and saddles were just some of the products a cobbler would produce. And in time they would all need repair. Gloves and many types of protective gear were made of leather. Hides were abundantly available from buffalo, bison, deer, elk, and smaller animals, such as rabbit, raccoon, fox, coyote, wolf, and other small species. Many cobblers were artists with the ability to transform raw material into something beautiful and comfortable with the expertise of a tailor or dressmaker. Doctors would write prescriptions for special attention in balancing a patient's stand by modifying their shoes. And someone had to be able to change the color of a leather product to comply with a customer's needs. This book opens the door on the private lives of two cobblers. My father and grandfather enjoyed the work they did, and as world production of inexpensive and inferior shoes took over the market, they found it too costly to compete. Aurel Dikin Sr. was the younger, but taller of the two shoemakers. The stories are my parents' stories, which I promised I would put together and share in my memory and love for them. Both have passed away years ago, and I'm honored to share their memories.

Born in the late 1940's and early 50's and raised in a segregated town in southern Mississippi, a group of Black girls and boys came of age together, and graduated from high school in Hattiesburg as "e;The Class of 1968."e; Now in their late 60's and early 70's, they have chosen to reflect on their families, community, and school experiences. Together, they experienced one of the most tumultuous eras in U.S. history, and they reflect on those experiences in these personal essays. They think back on the Vietnam War, the draft, the assassination of their neighbors and national leaders, and the Civil Rights Movement. The fact that they came of age during these tumultuous events makes their experiences all the more vivid and profound, since the tender adolescent years typically mark us more profoundly than other phases in life. Perhaps most significantly, the era suddenly brought racial desegregation to Hattiesburg, in early 1967. Under "e;Freedom of [School] Choice,"e; some Black Hattiesburg students saw their lifelong friends choose to attend the white high school for their senior year. Their stories bring forth a rush of memories, some that will make you laugh, others that will make you cry, and many that will make you wonder how things may have turned out differently had racism not poisoned their day-to-day lives. Although the contributors dealt with these formative experiences differently, all were touched in some way by the same forces in the dying days of legalized segregation. The essays here also reflect on our present moment: although racial segregation has lessened, it still persists in Hattiesburg and throughout America, leading to an era we might call racial resegregation. Yet the 1950's and 60's have ended. "e;We don't want these memories to die with us,"e; says lead editor Mrs. Doris Gaines. "e;We want the next generations to know our thoughts and feelings and to understand how the past helped make us what we are today, and what made us tick."e; The Class of 1968: A Thread Through Time explains how these citizens negotiated their youth in Hattiesburg and, in doing so, offers us wisdom about how to move through life with grace and integrity.

Sometimes, you need advice from people other than your parents, and Now What has all the advice and guidance one needs to enter the challenges of the real world. I have spoken at college campuses and can't believe how many students have no goals or any idea on what to do upon graduation. Now What covers topics such as interview preparation, setting goals, not letting anyone get in the way of your career, never to play with scared money, being the best at every job you have, be a great listener, be memorable, dress for success, investing advice, be highly creative, be a player not a victim, maintaining a positive attitude, not being afraid to fail, being decisive, and paying it forward to name a few. When I graduated West Virginia University in 1979, I started my first job out of college at WPLJ / New York City and showed up my first day in platform shoes and a plaid sport coat and basically got laughed at by my coworkers because I wasn't shown the way. This book will inspire you to take action and live the very best life you can live. Get out there and show them what you are made of and how special you are!

An epic achievement over one hundred years in the makingIn December 1941, Japan had perhaps the greatest combination of land, sea, and air forces the world had ever seen, and she used these to conquer a huge empire in the Western Pacific and East Asia. Yet by August 1945, Japan had been beaten to her knees by the combined power of China, Great Britain, and the United States. Was this destruction inevitable? Did Japan have no chance to defeat America and her allies? Why would she think she could successfully battle the two greatest industrial powers the world had ever known-Great Britain and the United States-at the same time?Violet Lightning: A Blueprint for Japanese Victory in the Pacific, 1941-1942 is a sweeping narrative over a century in the making. From the first confrontation in 1895 between the United States and Japan over Hawaii; to the massive Japanese defeats at Midway and Guadalcanal in 1942; to author John Eric Vining's first interest in the Japanese-American conflict in the fall of 1967 by reading Carrier War in the Pacific; to the fall of 1995 when Vining first put pen to paper on this project; and finally, to 2020's finished product by Page Publishing, Vining reviews a history of the acrimony between Japan and the United States in the first half of the Twentieth Century. He then builds what one reviewer calls a "e;chillingly believable"e; scenario for a Japanese victory in the greatest of all wars. Violet Lightning poses and answers the question: "e;Could Japan really have pulled it off?"e; You just might find yourself coming around to a point of view you didn't believe was possible.
