Charles Haldeman (1931-83) was a man with unusual literary and artistic abilities who sought to identify his and his generation's mission in the world of the midtwentieth century. Charles was born in the Depression; lived six months as a child in Hitler's Germany during the 1930s; grew up in a US Army town during World War II; and traveled, studied, and worked throughout the US, the Pacific, Europe, and Canada during the midtwentieth century. He lived his final 25 years in Greece, where he befriended and hosted the literary elite of this time and published three novels based on his experiences and knowledge of his generation and time. Charles Haldeman's letters reveal his search for his own identity. He was born to a mother from the segregated South and a father who migrated to the United States from Germany less than a decade before Hitler came into power. From an early age he sought to understand and separate himself from the racism in his family's American and German heritage, to reconcile the principles of the American dream with the reality of American life, and to help bring about a world in which human beings no longer used "e;war as a school for life"e; to build "e;monuments to stupidity."e; Seeking a country where the artist had the freedom to thrive, he made Greece his home, only find ultimate disappointment in his "e;love affair with Greece."e; Despite this disappointment and his early death, Charles Haldeman left a legacy of three novels that described a time in American and world history, giving voice to his "e;silent"e; generation. This memoir attempts to honor that legacy.

An attempt has been made to show the biblical and scientific relationship which exists between Palestine, Israel, and Jerusalem without prejudices. Since the New World was built after the Old World by Noah's three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, it seems logical that all nations can agree that they all came from one and are not unequal or unrelated in this "e;new"e; world.

Paper Tiger is a small concise picture of my thirteen years spent contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Starting with securing weapons of mass destruction in Southern Iraq to giving away billions of US tax dollars while leading teams in Hillary's army. This book was written in the most sarcastic manner; as sarcasm was my endurance formula for the incompetence of leadership provided to us in mission accomplishment. If the enemy ever knew how much we improvised and the illusions we created, then we would all be getting our heads lopped off on the Internet.

The soul-chilling story of Carlos MacIntyre continues with exploration into the darkest unswept chambers of his mind. Therein, his innermost fears are revealed, including his fear of the Light of Death himself, his dark side, the Widow-Maker. Since the Widow-Maker emerged from the darkness within him in The Awakening of the Widow-Maker, Carlos MacIntyre has sought to understand the mission of this Egyptian Blackness and be at one with his teacher. With the aid of his psychiatrist, Dr. Marcus Rutowski, who is his mother's old college psychology professor, the journey into his mind through hypnosis proves that the walls between different worlds no longer exist. From the Johnson Parkway tunnel underneath the Seventh Street railroad tracks in St. Paul, to the halls of the Bell Museum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota campus, in Downtown Minneapolis. As Li'l Carlos gives in more and more to the darkness, he becomes the living embodiment of requital. A cyanide cocktail in a chalice of destruction waiting for a worthy soul to take a drink. There is no safe haven to flee to, no bargaining chip to use for leverage, and no plea to offer that will obtain mercy. Only a terrible fate awaits those that fall on his list. He is armed with a brand-new set of construction skills from Summit Academy. The contortion of disfigured bodies in crawl spaces at renovated stores and the nauseous scents reported at numerous residential homes all seems unending and baffling for Lead Detective Tommy Soprano and his rookie partner, Mike Kowalski, whom are assisted by criminal pathologist Raj Sarkozy from the FBI, along with several police agencies. Many people in the neighborhood praise the Widow-Maker for the peace he's brought. Some want his head for the lives that he took. He is the walking curse upon many, the writing on the wall at the hospital, and the whisper in the minds of the unrepentant, reminding them of their deeds that they won't even dare utter in prayer. All know him, and none will forget him. As he casts his dark shadow upon the Twin Cities, they will witness the rise of the Widow-Maker.

When eighteen-year-old Gilly Moon vanishes on her way to a science fair at her school, a series of strange and confusing events is set into motion. Her dad, Henry, springs into action, dropping everything to search for his daughter. His desire to find Gilly may be responsible for turning him into a juggernaut private investigator, but his tenacity is intensified by the fact that his daughter is not the first person in his family to vanish without a trace. His mother, Kelly, was also taken from him and his father when Henry was a young boy. Although Kelly is never found, her case is closed when a serial rapist and murderer named Oliver Payne confesses to kidnapping and killing the young wife and mother forty years earlier. And even though the monster is serving a life sentence, what Henry learns about his daughter's disappearance causes him to wonder if Gilly's case is somehow related to his mother's. More digging causes Henry to question everything he ever believed about his family and his childhood when he discovers some astonishing long-kept secrets. Just as the realities of the past start disrupting the progress of his investigation, a writer who is familiar with Kelly's disappearance contacts Henry, and she wants to meet. Reenergized by her call, Henry agrees, and they quickly begin to combine their resources and evidence in order to pursue Gilly's case together. Will that help him find Gilly before she suffers the same fate as her grandmother? Time will tell, but Henry knows he doesn't have much of that! Every second Gilly is missing could be her last. As they push forward with their investigation, things get complicated and random people, places, and events become inexplicably intertwined. Inuendo, painful memories, and self-interests constantly come into play throughout this thrilling and suspenseful tale of the bad luck, or perhaps the intentional targeting, of one unfortunate and innocent family.

In life, we all have decisions. Growing up in a dysfunctional Brady bunch with two mothers and four dads, life was anything but simple. From my dad killing my best friend to my siblings taking advantage of my innocence and finding my mother naked numerous times surrounded by pills. All this before I was seven. At a young age, I learned how to persevere and be resilient. It was a rocky road battling crippling mental illness and having the only constant in life be change. It was lonely and demeaning. My biggest roadblocks were family. Blood does not always run thicker than water. But I adapted. I overcame. I beat the odds. I chose the road less traveled. I never accepted defeat.

What's This Book About?Through a series of unlikely events, Justice Miller, a university professor and former hockey star, discovers profound secrets about the fundamental nature of human civilization, the perils we face, and unexpected prospects for a brighter future. Not one to shy away from a fight, she and a group of activists provoke establishment adversaries as they pursue new solutions and strategies to confront our social and ecological problems. In the process, they launch a bold campaign to usher in a new era focused on greater interdependence and justice. Since humans first emerged on Earth two hundred thousand years ago with our unique abilities and characteristics, we have been on a journey toward this moment. We now face a crossroads and urgent choice: to live together interdependently or die separately. There is no salvation in isolation, no scientific breakthrough that can save us, no amount of money or weaponry or border fortifications that can shield us. Caring about others is the only way to sustainability, social justice, and prosperity. To some, this kind of change may seem idealistic or impossible or partisan or altruistic or even inconsistent with human naturebut they'd be wrong. It's happening right now, all around us, and when you know how to see it, you'll see it everywhere. But more importantly, when you know how to see it, you'll see opportunities everywhere. Not just opportunities to survivebut opportunities to thrive.

The Civilized Rats is a novel that tells the story of a tribe of rats that came together to establish an organized humanlike society under the inspiration of Nunuto, the city rat. In one of their annual tribal gatherings, they adopted the idea and started a kingdom of rats modeled along that of humans. The civilization, as they called it, blossomed. Under the inspirational Nunuto, the rats raised and trained an army that they named ratmy. They attacked humans, killed a snake, killed a cat, and chased away another deadly snake that swallowed rats. However, when Nunuto died of a snakebite, there arose a leadership crisis in the ratmy. This led to the breakup of the kingdom as intractable civil wars set in. Splinter ratmy groups emerged here and there and went violent. Societal problems like violence, stealing, robbery, rape, murder, wars, banditry, looting, fights for supremacy, and other problems akin to those found in human societies set in. The disunity among rats became worse than it was at the beginning. The kingdom collapsed, thus ending their dream of an organized society. One comes to the last but very brief chapter, only to discover that the entire story was a mere dream by an overfed rat that fell asleep in a kitchen.

My first view of Colorado was from the arms of my maternal grandmother, Mary Clarissa Cade, when I was eight months old. She brought me to Pueblo while my mother hopefully recovered from typhoid fever in far-off Arkansas. Two months later, Mary realized this little girl would be her responsibility from then on, and already Little Fern, as I was called, was determined to call her grandmother "e;Mama."e; My view changed as I graduated from my baby crib to following her around the garden in the backyard and learning to identify creeping things along the path. My grandfather, JW Cade, taught me to be seen and not heard and go to bed "e;with the chickens,"e; which I cheerfully ignored. My uncles and aunts and cousins taught me to feel accepted and honor my parents example of love. As I grew, I realized that Pikes Peak was a beautiful skyline, and my tree swing that hung from the backyard elm tree was a place to not only swing but read and sing and dream. The last view I treasured, even when I finally returned to Arkansas, was at night with the star-studded sky above just as in Colorado, where I dreamed I saw my parents and other dear ones above them looking down at me. Along with the music I learned there, I knew there were angels singing and watching over me, awaiting the time when we would all finally see home.

I would like to share my thoughts, my feelings about God's plan for Jamel. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of Jamel. The attorney really told me what happened that night. Jamel and Marlo just got off from work, and Marlo's aunt's boyfriend came to pick Marlo up to pick up his kids from his aunt's house, to take them to his wife's house, who he is separated from. Jamel wanted to go just for the ride. They picked up the kids and headed back to Woodstock to drop the kids and Jamel off. Reginald missed the turn-off and decided to stop on the highway and back up to go through the little intersection. A four-wheel drive came around and hit the right side of the car, and there was a U-Haul truck following it and ran into the back of the car, where Jamel, and Marlo's two kids were.God blessed where it was so quiet. The nurse said Jamel didn't feel a thing. His neck was broken first, where he couldn't feel anything from the neck down, whereas his chest was crushed, starting from the back to the front. Marlo said somebody said Jamel was still alive when they were trying to get him out. After they did, Jamel died. The doctor said, in his report, Jamel died quietly. He felt nothing. I sometimes think of this, but when I do, this is what the Lord lets me see. I see Jamel in this accident, but two angels were right there waiting and took Jamel by his two hands, and they all flew away together, up to heaven. Now, when I think of Jamel, I see him with a glorified body, happy. And when I pray, God reminds me that Jamel is okay.

Progress...Not So MuchIn times past, the shoemaker, or cobbler, was as important as a cooper (barrel maker), blacksmith, lumberman, or cattleman. In fact, maybe he was more important since all the other trades needed his services to perform theirs. Everyone needed shoes, but where would the lumberman be without proper boots, belts, and suspenders? How about the chaps the range riders used to protect their legs from briars and thistles? Halters, bridles, reigns, buggy whips, and saddles were just some of the products a cobbler would produce. And in time they would all need repair. Gloves and many types of protective gear were made of leather. Hides were abundantly available from buffalo, bison, deer, elk, and smaller animals, such as rabbit, raccoon, fox, coyote, wolf, and other small species. Many cobblers were artists with the ability to transform raw material into something beautiful and comfortable with the expertise of a tailor or dressmaker. Doctors would write prescriptions for special attention in balancing a patient's stand by modifying their shoes. And someone had to be able to change the color of a leather product to comply with a customer's needs. This book opens the door on the private lives of two cobblers. My father and grandfather enjoyed the work they did, and as world production of inexpensive and inferior shoes took over the market, they found it too costly to compete. Aurel Dikin Sr. was the younger, but taller of the two shoemakers. The stories are my parents' stories, which I promised I would put together and share in my memory and love for them. Both have passed away years ago, and I'm honored to share their memories.
