I have had Parkinson's disease (PD) for twenty-two years. I am told I have a mild case, but it is still my PD and I live with it 24/7. I would be a gross understatement to say my life was changed forever. Interesting, many of these changes have made me a more compassionate, empathetic, and caring person. In part, this book was motivated by the following premise: Many of us will experience a life-changing event that will cause us to pause and reassess where we are, what we do, and why we do it. For some, it might be the death of a loved one or a personal tragedy. Or it might be a re-awakening-that aha moment. For me, it was January 2, 1995, when my neurologist said, "Mr. Spekman, I have some bad news for you-you have Parkinson's." My life as it knew it crumpled around me.I could have wallowed in self-pity, but I am a fighter and chose eventually to manage my PD. I have adopted a number of Eastern non-traditional approached to deal with my PD. I have a yoga practice, meditate daily, and engage in massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic adjustments. All these different approaches complement my medication, and all contribute to my being very healthy, given the length of time I have had Parkinson's. I will take you on a journey, my journey, starting with denial to depression to, finally, acceptance.This book is more than the story of one man's journey with PD; it is a story of hope and personal transformation. If you permit me, I am going to take you on a journey that began over two decades ago. I have years to travel so do not ask where the destination is or ask if we are there yet. During the course of this book, I will share with you aspects of my life that were previously know to only a small number of people. Many teachers, pastors, and theologians don't believe America plays a significant role in the end times. Some teach that it will be wiped off the map. No one truly knows exact dates or for that matter what the antichrist will look like, but there is a definite template laid out within the Bible; America fits comfortably in that template. This book is a must-read if you are interested in what direction America is heading and who will rise to power in the near future.

I grew up in the Bronx during turbulent times. I was in elementary school during the first desegregation of the public schools in the early 1960s. This and my idealism formation during the late 1960s had a big impact on my values and my career. I went to City College of New York, and one of my psychology professors was Dr. Kenneth Clark, who was the major witness during Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka in 1954, leading to desegregation of the schools passed by the Supreme Court.I have my doctorate in school psychology from the Pennsylvania State University and have worked with a multitude of special education and regular school programs as well as my work as a consultant for Child Protective Services in New Jersey. A private practice in Princeton allowed me to challenge school districts on behalf of my clients who are parents and their special needs children. The law allowing for due process and IEPs has never been fully funded, and the work of Dr. Kenneth Clark to offer services to the disenfranchised in Harlem had disappointing results due to political wrangling and turf wars.There are many needs for students in the public schools and families in the inner city and elsewhere that cannot be met because of the poor funding offered for these services. I am recommending private funding to supplement or create new programming to meet these needs, which will never be met through the political wrangling of either party.

I feel that He is using me to get His message out to His people of how He wants us to be more responsible in our treatment and behavior toward our fellowmen, thus the title of the book, Go Forth! I Am My Brother’s Keeper. 

In Chronicles of a Child, we follow the life of a child named Bessie. We are allowed to see life through the eyes of a child. Sometimes she seems to be wise and somewhat mature for her age. Other times, she just wants to be loved by her mother and treated like a child. She gives us insight on how children experience and process life. Bessie helps us to understand that children take in everything—they take on the problems of the adults in their life. Sometimes they even take on the blame. Will Bessie overcome her guilt? 

The title “There Isn’t Any Grass on This Side of the Fence” is really a metaphor of poverty-stricken people who don’t have a choice but to remain in their ill-fated, destitute state. These people (as the subtitle indicates) have no money to even maintain a sufficient standard of living. They have no knowledge as to how to get themselves elevated up the financial hierarchy. Lastly, they don’t have the time to ascertain their predicament and to move up the food chain. This is a story that begins in the 1960s and ends some decades later. Placidville is really a 1960s ghetto filled with poor and uneducated people. The project, as it’s called, is a place of racial hatred, bigotry, and discrimination. Criminal activities are the order of the day. The theme of the project is to do on to others before they do on to you. The people are not just living; they are trying to survive. Little do they realize, once they move in, they will probably never be able to get out. Placidville is a spider’s web for those without funds. It’s an attraction that the have-nots cannot resist. Once in the web, the people soon become aware that escape is beyond their grasp. The project changes most everyone for the worse. In Placidville, all families become dysfunctional and continually fight among themselves. The project makes neighbors say and do terrible things to each other in order to gain an edge over the other. As time goes on, the residents learn how to cheat, steal, and to take advantage of every good or bad opportunity that come their way. The Placidville Project is a disease and there is no cure. To make matters worse, corrupt town officials and the police want nothing to do with the project. It’s a big headache that they wish would go away. However, this headache is not going away in the near future.  

Jacob had everything. A beautiful wife, two loving children, a nice home, and a great job working for the government, until the federal cutbacks affected him and his family. The economy had taken a dramatic change that forced the closure of many programs in the federal government. Jacob's was one of them.Forced to make many lifestyle changes, Jacob could not keep up with everything, and soon after losing his job, he started losing all that he had worked so hard for. Forced to move out of his home from foreclosure, his family moved in with family members.The strain placed on him was too great, and he soon found himself living alone on the streets so that his family could stay where they were. When the FBI was moving from Manhattan to Brooklyn, Jacob, rummaging through trash, came upon a computer disk he found in a box.Since losing his job and life, this was the first thing he had that brought back all the good memories of his lost past. As a computer operator, Jacob was curious, and his curiosity took the best of him. With the help of a friend, they cracked the code on a secure disk only to reveal the contents were the FBI's entire list of everyone in the witness protection program along with their new identities and addresses.In Jacob's mind, it was like finding gold. Knowing people of interest from the neighborhood, Jacob knew he could sell that information to them. Rumors of prices on certain rats' heads were on every street in Brooklyn. This could be his chance back to his life, but it wouldn't be easy. He had to stay ahead of the FBI and the mob both at the same time, and he had to collect the money, both placing him in danger.His decision would test all he was made of, and he was ready to find his way back to his family at any cost.

THE AWAKENED covers a very personal and intensive almost two-year period of UFO activity in my life. Much of it happened while living in the San Francisco Bay area. I believe it to be one of the most extensive, illuminating, and intimate UFO encounters of my generation. Having kept a journal of my highly unusual experience, I was able to create a complete record of dates, and roughly calculate lengths of missing time. I was also able to ascertain many details of some of my events. One of the most outstanding things my book demonstrates is how relentless and determined this experience can be. I felt I was continuously struggling to come up for air. I stand by my words. The AWAKENED, however unbelievable some or all of it may sound; it is the truth.

This is a book written about the neighborhood I grew up in, the good and bad times in the hood and my life history itself. So I hope and pray everybody enjoys it, and I quote to everybody.

The book deals with decisions made by the characters that would affect their future lives. How it affects their lives is surprising and unpredictable.
