Loring Crankshaw, the antihero of this book, is a charming scoundrel who acts as a decorator for older clients who are moving out of their large houses into retirement communities. While helping with their move, he helps himself to their treasures and enjoys romancing the widowed customers. Son of a famous artist, Crankshaw is handsome, amusing, and understands the subtleties of Massachusetts society. Families feel he is a good man to have during the stressful relocation time and most either don't notice of don't care about his stealing a few things. On the other hand, Ted Bumblechock, a member of an old Plymouth family discovers a Persian rug in a house in Plymouth that had belonged to his Grandmother. Apparently nobody in his family had noticed that it and many other treasures had gone missing. He tries to put a stop to Crankshaw's illegal and immoral practices. Part love story, part mystery, the novel deals with the indignities of old age with humor from the point of view of the old people themselves, who prefer not to be treated with condescension.

Nicotine, The World's Silent KillerAddiction is defined as giving up all that is important to you for the thing that you are addicted to. Nicotine is highly addictive. It is both a stimulant and a sedative to the central nervous system. When tobacco smoke is inhaled, the injection of Nicotine to the throat is exposed.to more than 7,000 chemicals. The result is almost an immediate "kick" because it causes a discharge of epinephrine from the adrenal cortex. This stimulates the central nervous system and other endocrine glands which causes a sudden release of glucose. Stimulation is then followed by depression and fatigue, leading to the abuser to seek more Nicotine.Nicotine is absorbed readily from tobacco smoke into the lungs, and it does not matter whether the tobacco smoke is from cigarettes, cigars or pipes. Nicotine is also absorbed readily when tobacco is chewed. With regular use of tobacco, levels of nicotine accumulate in the body during the day and persist overnight. Thus, daily smokers or chewers are exposed to the effects of nicotine for 24 hours each day. Nicotine taken in by cigarette or cigar smoking takes 7-10 seconds to reach the brain and it has a direct effect on the body. Smokeless tobacco, also known as; chew, snuff, spit tobacco, plug, chewing tobacco, chaw, dip, and other names, describes a variety of tobacco products that are not smoked by the consumer. Instead, this type of tobacco is usually placed in the mouth between the cheek or lower lip and the gums, where it mixes with saliva and releases juices that contain nicotine. The nicotine is then absorbed through the tissues in the mouth. "Life presents many choices; the choices we make determine our future." You control the path you take in life and remember, there are two types of consequences; negative and positive so the consequence is based on the choice you make. You have the power of choice to get rid of that deadly poison, nicotine, by thinking about its negative effects. There are many benefits to quit smoking, but there is no benefit for continued use of tobacco. If health improvements and more social freedom doesn't motivate you to quit, consider the financial rewards. To find out how much money you can save by quitting smoking, take the cost per day for your smoking materials and multiply it by 365 days. Surprised? Now multiply that amount by 10 so you can see how much you could save in the next 10 years. An effective way to make changes in the way you handle your addiction is to think about the price you have already paid. TO QUIT OR NOT TO QUIT; THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

  • - Defeating Depression, Overcoming Spiritual Oppression, and Finding God's Peace in Troubling Times
    av William L Stephens
    299,-

The author is a survivor of depression, and he wants to share his story with you. He faced the darkness of evil and found the light of hope. He was unwilling to become another ruined life caused by this horrible disease. The thought of taking his own life came into his mind at a low moment in time, and it scared the hell out of him. He decided in that instant not to become another statistic of suicide. He would fight back with all he had, depending on the Lord for the strength needed to succeed. He promised God if He would help him defeat this disease, that he would share with anyone who cared to listen. How he did it! This book is the story of a normal guy, with a great life, who came down with this horrible disease. Choosing to be a winner, he started learning as much as he could about the disease and those who suffer from it. Sadly, he learned that many who suffer from depression, are unable or unwilling to even recognize they have this disease. You see there is a stigma/embarrassment that is often associated with it, that many cannot shake. Consequently, many are unwilling/afraid to share with, and ask help from, friends, family and co-workers. They often decide to suffer alone. This author decided to be totally different, to become a winner. He told everyone who would listen that he had depression and planned to defeat it. He decided to share his story no matter how long it took or how many obstacles he faced. He made an effort ten years ago that failed, possibly because he was more interested in financial success than improving people's lives. Today is different! His measure of success now, is to help as many people as possible. We, and our great country are in troubling times, where more people are facing endless anxiety, fears, panic and problems without solutions, than ever before in America's history. The author is confident that a reader will find Through Valleys to Victory: Defeating Depression, Overcoming Spiritual Oppression, and Finding God's Peace in Troubling Times, is a book far different from any others written on this subject. • - Lessons From the Bedside for America's Leaders
    av Nate Link
    305,-

A NATION IN DISTRESSAmerica has enjoyed an enviable life. Yet, in recent years, there have been unmistakable signs of chronic illness. Our economic progress has fallen off its once-blistering pace, our ability to shape world events has been checked, and our vaunted democratic institutions have begun to collapse around us. America is ailing. Now, here we are, nearly forty years into a chronic illness that has resisted our best efforts at diagnosis. Is this the cancer of our advancing age? The long, slow, terminal decline that will defy the best approaches of modern Medicine? Our fitful end? Not necessarily. In the past four decades, American hospitals have garnered principles of safety from the aviation industry, gathered tips about quality from automobile manufacturers, and gleaned insights into customer service from the hotel trade. These interstellar innovations launched American healthcare into a continuously self-improving model of advancing performance. As such, the world of Medicine has valuable assets to offer the political multiverse: A culture of excellence. Intellectual tools to diagnose and treat difficult problems. A systematic approach that guides almost everything we say and do, yet is seldom employed in the chambers of government. And now it is time to pay it forward. In this collection of riveting stories from patient narratives and leadership challenges - from heartbreaking tales of AIDS, to a harrowing evacuation during Superstorm Sandy, to the exhilarating conquest of Ebola - Dr. Nate Link translates a lifetime of experience into useful lessons for our nation's leaders. To review these examples, he takes us to the bedside of his most memorable cases. We will learn from Natalie, the well-meaning ICU nurse who ignored the ventilator alarm, Juan, the irrepressible AIDS patient who had nine lives, Gerry, the bemused accountant whose brain could not store new memories, and Thomas, the accidental tourist who was raised from the dead. Two dozen other notable patients will teach us additional lessons in leadership. In the final chapter, our lessons will jointly lead us to a most unexpected conclusion and a prescription for the cure of our nation's mysterious malady.Dr. Link is the Chief Medical Officer of Bellevue, America's oldest public hospital, and has practiced there since arriving as a lowly intern at the onset of the AIDS epidemic. He earned his MD from Washington University School of Medicine in 1983, then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at NYU School of Medicine and Bellevue Hospital in 1986. Dr. Link was Co-Chief Editor of the "Bellevue Guide to Outpatient Medicine," winner of the American Medical Writers Association award as Book of the Year for Physicians in 2001.

My name is Margaret Speicher, author of my first book entitled, "Love...One Lump or Two " Although I have always had a life-long dream to write a book, I never thought that I would ever accomplish this seemingly impossible task. However, dreams sometimes come true - and for me, it took divine intervention! It all happened one evening when I was awakened in the middle of the night with the idea of writing a book. I recall contemplating an appropriate topic and title for my book, in addition to the various chapter headings and content, which surprisingly flowed very easily from my thoughts. Maybe this was my destiny!Upon awakening the next morning fully motivated by my newest endeavor, I immediately jotted down my thoughts from the previous night's ideas for a book and began composing my thoughts onto paper. Thus, an inspiring story developed about my humorous and entertaining challenges and opportunities (bumps) that this determined blonde with a definite sense of humor and temporary misguided sense of direction from a recent divorce encountered. In passionate pursuit for my soul mate, "Mr. Right", my journey began with the chapter on "The Date from Hell" involving many unforeseen happenings on an attention-grabbing double date through the chapter on "Dating 101" describing fresh ideas and methods of surviving the singles' scene and meeting suitable men and more leading to "Mr. Wonderful", my perceived soul mate from God - or was he?I truly felt that writing and publishing this inspiring and entertaining book was inspired by the Holy Spirit and that my experiences and determination in the singles' world could help others undergoing similar problems in finding love and living alone. This is my reason for pursuing the publication of my work, remembering that "If God takes you to it; He will get you through it!"

In Zerocuse we follow Jimmy who's lost his family, his sense of home, as he heads back to his 20-year high school reunion to reconnect with ... something, anything. Both elegiac and light-hearted, Zerocuse is a multilayered story about the relative value of nostalgia, the unreliability of memory, and the power of reconnection. It also has a lot of swearing, probably too much, but you'll just have to deal with that part of it.

  • - Segregation, Tolerance, and Reflection: A Four-Generation African-American Educational Struggle
av Jerry L Jones Ed D
    249

Go and Come Again begins with a focus on the history and culture of a small town in Southwest Virginia during the era of segregated schools and the concurrent Jim Crow mind-set. The first chapters analyze the various struggles of the author's family, selected teachers and students, and the transitions of the early 1960s. Later chapters detail the author's experiences at a historically black college as well as his work experiences as a high school teacher, a professor at a community college, and a professor at a small, church-affiliated liberal arts college which is located near his birthplace. Additionally, the author chronicles his own personal journey-from his early days as the younger son of a single mother who struggled financially to his later profile as author, local politician, church musician, lay speaker, community leader, and educator.Even though the Supreme Court decision of 1954, Brown v. the Board of Education, ruled that racially separate school systems should be ended, it was not until 1965 that this happened in Washington County, Virginia, the county where Jerry Jones was born. Moreover, the shortcomings of public school education for African Americans existed for generations. In his book, Go and Come Again, Jones details the public school experiences of his grandmother's generation, his mother's generation, and his own generation. As a teacher in the fast-changing area of computer literacy, the author devotes significant attention to his desire for graduate study and other opportunities for continuing education. He also analyzes the factors which have contributed to the many successes of Southwest Virginia blacks who left their hometown areas for education and employment. The extent to which one struggles to care for an elderly parent is a topic which brings an array of emotions to the surface. With no other siblings to assist in his mother's final years, Jones had the challenge of being the sole caregiver until her death at age 93-an event which still casts a shadow on his own perceptions of love and family. Delicately, he outlines the key events of that time in his life and his belief that his own life continues to have meaning and that living alone should not be feared.

Nancy had the uneasy feeling that Reggie was drifting away from her. Everyone thought she had made the perfect match three yeas ago. She was teacher in a college prep high school in her small home town in Connecticut. Her husband worked for his father''s financial planning company. They owned a beautiful house, had many friends, and her parents adored Reggie. On spring break, while on a family trip to Nancy''s grandmother''s beachfront condo in Palm Beach, Florida, Nancy asked her mother for advice. She was told that she should waste no time in setting up some counseling sessions as soon as she got home.. Nancy said she would. While in Palm Beach, her sister and she attended a wedding of one of their friends, and she ran into a young man with whom she had a teenage romance seven years ago. Her sister had warned her then that her father would never approve of this boy. He was certainly good looking, hardworking, ambitious, and charming, but came from a very poor emigrant family. Now he was evidently pretty successful and owner of his own beachfront condo that he was anxious to show off. The attraction was still there, and although she was feeling particularly vulnerable, Nancy assured herself that she could maturely handle any advances he might make. She accepted his invitation. When she got back to Connecticut, she and her husband attended several counseling sessions, which seemed to rekindle her husband''s lost passion. But finally, he had to admit his secret. Now, three months later, Nancy was back at her grandmother''s condo with her divorce papers in hand. Her school term was over and she was anxious to get away from everybody. She had her own secret she hadn''t revealed to anyone. Decisions had to be made soon, and the rest of her life hung in the balance.

This compilation of meditations was written primarily in the midst of the pandemic of 2020.  The author has called this collection “Utterances from God’, because she believes that God is delivering important messages during these occurrences.  Life has truly changed from the way we know it, with the pandemic only being a part of the chaos!Beginning with the “anatomy of a crisis”, the author’s prayer is that this insight be applied certainly during the current pandemic, however, can also be useful in any crisis of life that one finds themselves in.  Each crisis we meet can be broken into components:  the reality that the crisis exists, the reaction to the crisis, the rays of hope through the crisis, and the route one takes moving forward beyond the crisis. The author has attempted to categorize each meditation into its appropriate component of the crisis. Please journey with the author, as she feels that these meditations are God-inspired. She has prayed consistently that the reader will find hope and joy, despite what circumstances they are encountering, and may encounter in the future.
