  • - As Methods of Finding the Truth
    av Phillip K Tompkins
    309,-

Replication and Open Communication As Methods of Finding the Truth combines academic research with significant real world experiences that will surprise and amaze. In this book you will follow Dr. Tompkins' first-person narrative of moving from a failed replication of an experiment in a chemistry lab to his investigative work as he attempted to replicate the facts of Truman Capote in his "non-fiction novel" In Cold Blood. This search for replication resulted in Dr. Tompkins' article in Esquire Magazine titled In Cold Fact, which presented a detailed counter narrative of many of the facts in Capote's book. Replication and Open Communication as Methods of Finding The Truth continues with Dr. Tompkins work investigating and reporting on the causes of the Kent State Massacre. Hint: the lack of open communication played a major role. Dr. Tompkins describes his work as a consultant to Werhner Von Braun during the R& D phase of NASA's Moon Rocket Project where the principles of open communication and replication were significant to its success; and their lack in later space flights where Von Braun was not involved led to the tragedies of the Challenger and Columbia disasters. Dr. Tompkins' research and real world experiences described throughout this book found that replication and open communication, when combined, produced desired outcomes, including the truth. And the lack of them could produce disaster. All of this leads to Dr. Tompkins applying the methods of replication and open communication to other topics, such as second opinions in medicine, before reporting a stunning climactic discovery, the independent confirmation of findings dating to the 17th century when chemistry, i.e. science, was able to emerge out of the dark chaos of alchemy. Dr. Tompkins is the former editor of Communication Monographs, Past President and Fellow of the International Communication Association, and author of six books, two of which draw on his 22 years of experience as a volunteer at the St. Francis Center, a large day shelter for homeless "guests" in Denver, Colorado.

    av Mary Nolan Brown
    275,-

When Alice Paul of the National Woman's Party asks Mary Nolan to return to Washington, D.C., to demonstrate again for women's right to vote, Mrs. Nolan immediately packs her bags for the trip. Her family decides that because of her age and health, someone should go with her. Everyone agrees, but no one is available except granddaughter Delia whose relationship with her grandmother is strained. Her unmentioned assignment is to keep Grandmother from being jailed-again. On the train to Washington, Delia is introduced to army Captain Richard Manning. The captain calls on Delia in Washington and, despite a cool reception from Grandmother, a motorcycle wreck, and the prospect of separation, romance blossoms. At the boarding house where Delia and Grandmother stay, Delia meets Frances Dove, a nurse returning from the battlefields of France, who tells Delia of a friend's romantic betrayal and death. Countering this is Delia's friendship with Eloise Brown, a volunteer at NWP headquarters, whose budding romance with the neighborhood baker and plans to be an independent woman inspire Delia to chart her own course.Delia's interest in the suffrage movement is kindled when she meets Alice Paul and other women at the NWP headquarters. A chance encounter with Mary Church Terrell of the National Association of Colored Women; learning of Margaret Sanger's fight for women's reproductive rights; trying to convince Florida U.S. Senator Duncan U. Fletcher to vote for the Susan B. Anthony Amendment; and experiencing first-hand the horrors of the Washington, D.C., jail all transform Delia from a naïve girl into a mature young woman.By the end of the trip, Grandmother Nolan and Delia's relationship has changed as they have bonded through shared experiences.Parting ways in Jacksonville, Florida, Grandmother Nolan and other suffragists continue on their national tour aboard the Freedom Train, as Delia begins her journey home to Fernandina and into a new era opening for women.

They decide on a visit to Asbury Woods, which is a nature preserve only about four miles from their homes on Presque Isle State Park. Their journey to Asbury Woods is sure to be fun, exciting, and educational for a young child. They will be delighted that they can join Tucker and Ripley and their friends on their travels throughout Asbury Woods. This book is the second in the series of books that features Tucker, a Painted Turtle, and Ripley, a Cottontail Rabbitt who live on Presque Isle State Park. The book takes the two of them plus several other of their Presque Isle animal friends to this unique 205-acre nature preserve. Asbury Woods is quite different from Presque Isle and includes many features such as raised boardwalks, large hills, and meadows, plus many large and small ponds and a large creek. In the book, the child will visit twenty-four of these places, plus meet many of the animals that live within Asbury Woods. In addition, at Asbury, there is the Andrew J. Conner Nature Center, a large building where there are many displays, an indoor Bee colony, and an indoor waterfalls. There are also classrooms, meeting rooms, and a gift shop. This is a book that is ideal for reading to children from 2 to 7 years of age. It contains many lighthearted illustrations and has many special reader's choice educational sections. These sections highlight what is contained on the current page being read, and can include animals, birds, and insects. Within this will also be interesting features and information about Asbury Woods and its special environment. There are also many special hidden highlights, such as an ant sunbathing on a lily pad, and an eagle carrying Tucker's little Red Wagon. "The plot, the characters and the setting come together to make ''The Reunion'' entertaining as all get out. A really fun read. And what a great movie it would make." -Laura Fedele, WFUV Radio Four life-long friends return to their small Southern home town for their 30th high school reunion. 325,-

This is the tenth book in the John Board series but is about a different type of drifter, one who drifts across the United States in his vehicle. Not all that different from Board, his territory is the open road, cheap motels and quick food diners and the people he meets are truckers, motel based hookers, crooked cops and others like him. Not overly honest but a person who can survive. And live in a different jungle.
