  • - A Novel of Artistic Destiny, Aspiration, Creativity, Recognition... and Fracture....
    av Sue Hassel
    339,-

In Boca di Lupo is Sue Hassel's first novel following up her initial book Random Thoughts of a Creative Mind, a collection of poetry and essays also published by Outskirts Press which has enjoyed wide readership internationally. In Boca di Lupo is the story of talented Soprano Lisa Brennan who began as a modest farm girl in Wisconsin and whose talent as an important solo artist which began in Wisconsin, expanded to Europe internationally performing at Covent Garden, Vienna Stats Oper, La Scala and the Lincoln Opera in New York City. It is the story of a dedicated musician with great discipline who managed an initially modest voice and thrilled audiences throughout the world as her voice matured. Operatic voices can begin as shooting meteors and with time the brilliant lightning bolt begins to age like a fine wine, eventually thinning some and refining to become an established artiste. At a certain point the body changes and the voice follow into secondary leading roles that can be managed to the end of a career. Lisa, however, is not so lucky since fate throws her a curveball when she is thrown into a sudden life or death struggle in the remote woods of New Jersey as a result of an unintended kidnapping by a criminal who has been a lifelong grifter who made a ghastly mistake and jumped into an empty cab for a joy ride and drove off with an unseen famous opera singer who had her head buried in her luggage as she dug through her bag in the back seat of his cab! Was it fate or just bad luck? The rest of the story plays out in the dense woods of New Jersey in a battle of survival to the death. The irony is that Lisa grew up on a farm and did heavy work. The grifter ends up dead in a heap of bloody sinew and scattered cerebral tissue. The grifter misjudged his mark. He is dead and Lisa is charged with second degree murder and is brought to trial by a famous attorney. How will this all play out? Will Lisa ever sing again publicly?

  • - A St. Augustine Culture
    av Robert P Jones
    275,-

A Minorcan Family Heritage highlights a beautiful culture that appeared in 1768 and continues to this day primarily in St. Augustine, Florida. These exceptional immigrants left their homes on the Isle of Menorca and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. They had signed contracts to become indentured servants of Dr. Andrew Turnbull. After serving from seven to nine years at his indigo plantation in New Smyrna, Florida, they would be free and given a tract of land. Over 1400 Minorcans began the trip from Menorca. When they fled from the plantation in 1777, they had to walk 70 miles on King's Highway, to a bustling St. Augustine. They arrived when the American Revolution was being fought. The British flag flew in St. Augustine from 1763 to 1783 and during the war over 15,000 Loyalists escaped from the Colonies seeking refuge and passage out. The Minorcans were present for this mass exodus as well as the Indian Wars, the War of 1812, the Civil War and both World Wars. A Minorcan Family Heritage tells the exciting story of Antonio and Catalina Usina and one line of descendants in the Usina family.

  • - Live Fully
    av Joni Grant
    235,-

If you think aging is a passive endeavor, you are wrong. We don't stop using our bodies to propel us through our daily lives because we've reached a certain age. We become sedentary at our own peril. Instead of becoming weak, learn how to stay strong. Instead of risking a fall, learn how to be stable. It only takes three hours per week to build muscle, improve balance and stability, and slow bone loss. And resistance training offers even more benefits, such as a lowered risk of a heart attack or stroke. Train to Age is about more than cardio and resistance training. It's about all the things you want to do with the last third of your life. You can passively walk through the process of aging, allowing its degradations to take away your strength and eventually your independence-or you can Train to Age and live your best life well into your eighties!

  • - Life in a Small Village on a Small Island
    av Everson James Peters
    299,-

During the post-emancipation through to the 21st century, the descendants of slaves had established on the small Grenadine island of Carriacou, the village of Goat Hill on marginal lands. These lands had been over-cultivated to produce indigo, sugarcane and cotton primarily for the benefit of Europeans. The plantation owners had gone, forced to give up their parasitic life on the backs of Goat Hillians' ancestors. While the people who now occupied the small village were all poor in material things, they utilised the culture of their ancestors to live in harmony with nature and with one another. The uniqueness of a village transitioning over time but anchored in the beliefs, myths, culture and the socio-economic experiences that laid the foundation of life in Goat Hill, Their basic philosophy, which is one of community, was exhibited then and now, and is often expressed in the phrase "one for all and all for one" or sometimes in a patios: "Caca Bawee for Caca Bawee." Unable to escape the effect of globalisation, the village has been able to withstand the changes, both bad and good. The village is, now a modern community, no longer experiencing material poverty but is challenged to avoid a corruption of its basic philosophy as money and politicians play on their souls and diluting those characteristics that made Goat Hill the envy of so many.Set in Carriacou, the novel captures the essence of island living from post-emancipation through to the 21st century. The characters, rituals and events recounted place the socio-cultural heritage centre stage, taking the reader back in time and bringing the discourse to life. At the same time, skilfully woven into the tapestry are the changes that propel economic advancement and the attendant challenges that threaten to erode what is sacred. In a society where cultural preservation is dependent on the oral tradition, the writer fills a documentation void and invites the younger generation and the world over to explore

Like a light in darkness, the music of Giacomo Puccini continues to brighten the world long after his death. Forced into a music career, Puccini resisted every effort to shape his future. He preferred to loaf, to pursue women, and to cavort with like-minded friends. However, Fate and a determined mother had other plans for him: He was destined for greatness. Success brings exhilarating rewards, and all of them came with La Boheme, Tosca, Madame Butterfly and Turandot. But success can also bring cold disappointment and intense pain. Giacomo Puccini discovered this to be true every day of his long and fascinating career.

IF DOGS COULD READ (and I believe they can - just not in the way we translate the printed word) then this collection should appeal to those who care about dogs: their behaviors, their importance in our lives, and their noble quality which most of us (including the author) strive unsuccessfully to attain. For those of us not fixated upon dogs, you will find the majority of poems addressing family and death of family, the Vietnam War, a thankfully brief selection of limericks, vintage North Carolina postcards in a Haiku format, and other mostly personal observations, to include a neighborhood suicide, growing older, Autumn, and rain.

  • - How does God want us to appraise all things?
av II Pitts & Pastor Randy
    285,-

"Spiritually Appraising" is God's commandment for the way Christians are to assess and to judge all things - I Corinthians 2:15. Well in order to spiritually appraise all things, you must first know God's word (rhema - 4487 GK.), meaning His scriptures. This is why we are also commanded to live by His every word - Matthew 4:4, because only His word, scriptures, are the truth. And no, we don't use our human mind to spiritually appraise, we have to use the mind of Christ - I Corinthians 2:16b, which is why we are commanded not to think like the world, but to have our minds renewed - Romans 12:2. Yes a renewed mind gives you the mind of Christ. Well this is why God has given us close to 8,000 scriptures in the New Testament. Think of it like a puzzle. If there was a 500 piece puzzle and all you had was 2 or 3 pieces, do you honestly know what the whole puzzle looks like? No you don't! You need His knowledge (epignosis), meaning His full and complete truth, in order to rightfully spiritually appraise ALL things. Well God has done His job by giving us His knowledge in abundance, so that we can now spiritually appraise all things according to His word. It's now time for us to do our job as Christians, AKA His children, to honor and obey Him by spiritually appraising all things.

  • av Karamba Bayo

A Book in Search of a True Recognition of America's Generosity Towards Others, and to Say at Last, "Thanks, America." Americans' continual trust in a unique Creator, expressed through the motto "In God We Trust," could not be changed even by the events of 9/11. I love America and its people for many reasons: for their commitment to making one another happy, their unparalleled generosity toward non-Americans, for being the land of the free and the home of the brave, where dreams come true, and where liberty is in the very air they breathe. America's greatest triumphs lie in its laws, which guarantee that it will remain the light of democracy throughout the world. My name is Mr. Karamba Bayo, son of Soriba and Mariama Conde. I was born in Conakry Republic of Guinea, West Africa. I am married to Salematou Bangoura, born in Dakar, Senegal and have four sons and two adopted daughters. I graduated from High School Conakry/Guinea 1965 - General Studies/Accounting/Finance. I graduated from the Shipping College of Gdansk, Poland in Shipping Accounting 1970, and received a diploma from the English language school in London (Euro center). In 1982, I graduated from Shipping Academy of Norway (NORAD) Oslo /General Shipping certificate. I attended Columbus State Community College 2008 - 2010.

The merrymaking cousins are traveling again, but this time they are in the beauteous city of Boston, where there will be no place for disaster to find them, or could it? Their intentions were to see everything they could before going home, and they were going to take advantage of it all. They were hopeful this would be a vacation free of distress, unlike some of their other vacations of the past. The cousins were titillated to observe all the sights the city of Boston had to offer. They could barely wait to stand by the Paul Revere statue, see the replica of the Mayflower and their Village, and grasp everything on the "Freedom Trail." They traipsed the sidewalk that would take them to the museum for the appointment they had made earlier. Everything was going great, until something happened that took them away to a locale they never thought would be attainable to them. While in this place, the variant group of friendly people they met, and the things that happened, will never be forgotten.

  • - An Examination of Authentic Christian Discipleship
    av Edward Kleinguetl
    235,-

The world is on fire. People seem to have forgotten God. Yet, are we happier without God? Evidence suggests an answer: increased cynicism, hopelessness, despondency, despair, burnout, and depression. We find ourselves chasing after the world, jumping on a veritable treadmill of dissatisfaction-seeking, finding, casting away, seeking again-always coming up empty. Churches are emptying and prescriptions for anti-depressants are increasing. Love of neighbor has given way to love of self. Me, me, me ... I myself. The further we find ourselves from God, the more ravenous wolves hem us in. This is not the life God wants for us. Jesus is the good shepherd who came so that we might have life and have it more abundantly. He tells us that his sheep hear his voice and follow him. Are we listening? Or are we seduced by the noise of the world. Today, spiritual dryness has created a tinderbox, ever at risk of erupting into destructive flames. Consciously or unconsciously, we need God-the living waters of salvation. The greatest challenge is to abandon the broad, comfortable thoroughfare of sin and return to God with humility and repentance. God loves us and sent his Incarnate Son to lead us back to him. Jesus is the gate and only he can fulfill the desires of every human heart. Let us take time to listen to the voice of Jesus.

The raw truth of early trauma; the twists and turns through an honest expression of a road traveled through survival and healing. The ministry of death haunted the author through loss of family members and stability. In memory of the author's mother who passed away in 1989, just after his 18th birthday and his high school graduation. He spent many years attempting to resurrect a family that passed, feelings of hopelessness but he never gave up trying. Sylvia was a graceful woman with the class and elegance of a nineteen 50's icon. Everyone loved Sylvia, as she so delicately crocheted stockings for her family to hang on the mantel at Christmas. The love of family and her undying efforts to care for allying parents through end-of- life. Sylvia chose Catholic School for her son; he was dropped off at the door and attended mass alone. Sylvia had an inclination that her son would become an ordained priest someday. In the throws, the author's marriage breaking down he went back to church; his roots and his salvation. He entrenched himself in the word of the Lord; discerning the option of becoming a Priest. As a physician of souls, I attempted to save them retroactively, decades after they took up permanent residency in Elysian fields, the final dwelling of the souls of the damned, the virtuous, and the heroic, a two-dimensional exurb of heaven governed by the demigods Chronos and Kairos, the horizontal and the vertical respectively... Some called it Purgatorio. I referred to it as the land of the Cross, for it was Christ who stretched out his arms on the cross as he looked heavenward and beseeched his father, God to save him, crying out, my God, - My god, why have you abandoned me!
