Joan Getchell Cole was a prolific writer, and recorded every adventure, small and large, that she had while travelling for her husband's work with the Pitometer Company as a Water Works engineer. Growing up in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, spending summers by the water, this nomadic life was new and exciting for her. When they settled and had their three children, Joan continued to write - sometimes entries in her children's baby books, sometimes longer pieces on "Wartime Bedpan Techniques" or "Youth Today" - and she gathered and kept all this writing hoping to put it in the "book of happy memories" she always planned to write. When Joan passed away suddenly just shy of her 36th birthday, she left her three children and husband with this abundance of words and reflections on the life she had led. When she had grown into a woman, her eldest daughter, Joan Cole Pendergast, collected and kept all she could find of these writings, and compiled them into this book with the help of two of her grandchildren. My Book of Happy Memories is the book Joan never got to finish, and is a labor of love from the daughter who remembers her as a warm and loving woman, full of life.

God's plan has always been available to us in the form of prophecy. He told us it would be "sealed up" or made difficult to understand, until the time of the end. I am so excited to share with you my second book, where Owen introduces his little sister Addison. She is so excited about her adventure, though it is a dangerous assignment. Her job in this adventure is to deliver her families seeds to her Mom Mom's farm for planting next years food. Let's see what she learns as she walks among the flowers. I have loved the outdoors and photography, for as long as I can remember. Being from a family of seven has a lot to do with that. They are some of my fondest memories. I spent five years studying Latin, botany, and horticulture at the prestiges school, Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. I had my own landscape business for about fifteen years when we lost our oldest daughter. Then came along our two beautiful grandchildren by our only other daughter. Owen and Addison literally saved my life. I have recently suffered a spinal injury doing a paver sidewalk that called for spinal fusion surgery (twice in two weeks). And these are the outdoor adventures that I wrote for them. There are clues on every page to help them appreciate and preserve the natural world around them. I hope that you enjoy it as well.

This book is about twin brothers Pierce Samuel and Robin Stephen Tomlin born 1836 on a plantation in the Shenandoah Valley Virginia. Their family are Irish descendants who came to America to find a better life for them and for their future families. They both entered Military Academy West Point in 1856 and both graduated in the class of 1860. Since the brothers were always divided about slavery, when the war broke out between the states, Pierce sided with the South and joined the CSA (Confederates States of America) and Robin sided with the North and joined the USA (United States of America). When Pierce and Robin were captured and sent to POW (Prisoner of war) camps, both were released and returned to their units to finish out their military careers until the war ended.

Rōmon is a traditional two-storied gate found in a place of worship in Japan. "Rō"means "multi-storied", and "mon" means "gate" in Japanese. A typical rōmon in Japan is constructed with wood; massive and decorative; and has a large hip-and-gable roof and a wraparound small balcony with railings. Rōmons that are noted for their artistic beauty and historical significance tend to belong to Shinto shrines. Yet no one can answer such simple question as how many rōmons exist in Shinto shrines in Japan. This very first book about Shinto rōmons has two parts. Part 1 is about reporting results of my search for existing Shinto rōmons across Japan. First, I explain the unique and systematic techniques I used to search for existing rōmons. Then I report findings from my search. Results are organized by various topics, such as time of construction, geographic location, relative spatial position, notable exterior characteristics, zuijin statues, and preservation of rōmons. Findings are primarily aggregated at the group level, but notable examples of individual cases (specific rōmons) are also provided. In short, Part 1 is designed to answer such basic questions as "What is rōmon?" "What do they look like?" and "Where are they located?" Part 2 is about lost Shinto rōmons. The existing rōmons are only a small part of the rōmons that have ever been built, and on average in every several years a rōmon is lost due to fire, earthquake, old age, among other reasons. Part 2 consists of a collection of fascinating stories and trivia of lost Shinto rōmons. These stories and trivia relate to specific shrines, famous persons, or historic events, and are organized chronologically. Examples of topics include "Iwashimizu Hachimangū - Eight Generations of Rōmons", "Kashiwahgi Jinja - Musical Chairs of Rōmons", "The Toyotomi Clan vs. the Tokugawa Clan - Who is the Rōmon Shogun?", "End of the Syncretism - Did Shinto Shrines Lose Rōmons?" and "A Forgotten Lost Shinto Rōmon Overseas." This book also contains 12 tables, 8 figures, a glossary of Shinto gates, and bibliography. Finally, the appendix lists all 225 existing rōmons, their locations, structural designs, and historic preservation designations.

A life at the intersection of justice and peace...Reverend John A. Collins grew up in the all-white Chicago neighborhood that stoned Martin Luther King, Jr. when he led a march for fair housing there in 1966. Yet he was to devote his adult life to the support for racial justice, and as a white clergyman who served Black churches in the inner-city, he was beloved by his parishioners. It was not until his mid-thirties, however, that he found his calling, after having served as a Navy lieutenant aboard an aircraft carrier in the Korean War and two years as a lawyer in Chicago. But his ministry was not confined to the pulpit. As a founder of the Student Interracial Ministry, it would take him into the Civil Rights Movement in the Deep South, into support for Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty, and into the campaign against redlining and the deindustrialization of the Midwest. This military veteran would also become an ardent peace activist, leading an effort to stop U.S. deployment of cruise missiles in Europe; and as a founder of Witness for Peace he would lend his support to victims of the U.S.-funded Contra War in Nicaragua. While a young boy summering at his parents' cottage among the Indiana Dunes on Lake Michigan, he would often climb a tree he called his "spy tree" to look out over the world he knew then: his neighborhood of small cottages and down to the lake. Little did he know then that his neighborhood would expand beyond the perimeters of a boy's vision to encompass so much of the world. We all hear the great names in the civil rights, peace, and poor people's movements, but it is often those whom we do not know that have the greatest and most lasting impact. John Collins is such a one, and his story deserves to be heard. Here he has told it humbly and well, often enlightening the reader by setting the record straight on wrongly maligned programs. But perhaps above all, he reminds us how justice can never be separated from community and care.
