  • - Short-Term Missions in the Children's Homes of Jamaica
    av Haagenson Heidi Haagenson
    249

Lessons Learned in Jamaica is not only a captivating collection of stories about the children Heidi Haagenson has met and the situations she has faced in her many years of short-term mission work, but also serves as an excellent resource for individuals, groups, or churches considering getting involved in short-term missions. Written in a warm, informal style, readers will feel as though they are involved in a friendly coffee house chat with the author, as she describes how her experiences in Jamaica have taught or reinforced important life lessons. Each chapter focuses on a lesson learned from the children of Jamaica, her fellow mission teammates, and friends met in the churches, towns, homes, shops, and streets of Jamaica. Her personal experiences are woven together with Jamaican culture, history, and folklore to create a unique, inside look at the people of Jamaica. Using a delightful combination of humor and compassion, Haagenson recounts both the happy and the sad realities of the lives of Jamaican children under State care. Her knowledge is gained through the experience of living and working directly in one of those children's homes on a short-term basis each year. A must-read for anyone who is interested in learning not only about short-term mission work, but also about the ebbs and flows of the daily lives of Jamaica's most vulnerable.

  • - A Novel of Immigration to America
    av Michalik John J. Michalik
    339,-

In 1910, Jan Brozek is a lone traveler making his way across Europe with a singular purpose: immigrate to America and establish himself there as quickly as possible so he can afford sending for his fiancée, Maria. But as is the case with many best-laid plans, Jan's soon go terribly off-course. It begins with him saving the life of a stranger-the daughter of a powerful nobleman-and the attraction for her that he must grapple with, and which only grows more intense. Jan's travels bring to his metaphorical doorstep murder and corruption, personal tragedy, natural disasters, and everyday drama; and the people Jan meets along the way tempt him with unexpected opportunities until his long journey takes one more, final unexpected turn. Inspired by the journeys-at times exciting, at other times tumultuous, and almost always nerve-wracking -of all immigrants, including his own grandfather, John Michalik wrote Another Way Over: A Novel of Immigration to America to not only encourage thought about why people seek a better life for themselves and their families, but also in recognition of the courage and commitment it takes to pull up stakes and pursue a new life, the contributions immigrants may and can make to their new home, and the spirit in which they should be received.

  • av Platt Bert Platt
    285,-

Laura had touched many lives as she was living her dream, but she had lived it alone, and voices were now reminding her that even bigger dreams might lie just beyond the horizon. Robert's own dreams had been shattered, and he found himself lost and alone in the darkness, a darkness which he did not understand and from which he could not escape. From their very different lives and from inspirations as unique as the worlds from which they had come, their searches for purpose and light lead them to the Rhine. On an iconic journey through the heart of Europe, they pass castles and cathedrals, and deep valleys and hillsides covered in vineyards: truly a fairy tale setting. But their journey is no fairy tale. Each tributary along the way and bend in the river brings magnificent vistas and even greater opportunities, but also brings conflict and choices. Which fork to take? Stay in the smooth water or risk the rapids? Beneath the quiet surface of the water lay real life, and Laura and Robert find more on their voyage than they could ever have imagined...or dreamed for. Their voyage of discovery reveals the truth that always lies beneath: Whether our journeys are marked by smooth sailing on calm waters or we have found ourselves blown far from our intended course, we never take those journeys alone.

  • - My Poetry, His Business
    av Fobbs Rubye L. Fobbs
    235,-

First of all, three of my reflective poems as you notice when you read them do not have times and dates recorded in the header. I went back and read them and I blessedly remembered why each of them didn't have these personal requirements of my own style. Poems 4,7,10 are the standouts. They were just created to be looked at now and then and to be written in personal greeting cards (eg. Poem 7, greeting card) The first poem, His Business, His Word entails what I have learned about myself through learning who Jesus is and that What His Business is about; the righteousness of his Word and the obedience thereof. Assuredly; He is God in the flesh, and the Holy Ghost in the spirit. His Business brings about His Word called, the Bible, which in my small way I help through my poetry.

The intended purpose of this book is to provide easy reading with factual based content about our leaders and the story of our country. It is meant to inform and entertain the reader and hopefully ignite an interest in American history, along the lives and accomplishments of each of our Presidents. It is in bullet form and in sequence for simplicity. Therefore, it is a quick read, filled with relevant details. I also included some humorous facts about the lives of our Presidents as I found that they helped to humanize each President and it made it fun to share with others.

It was a chilly September night in 1940 when we first heard the air raid siren begin its wailing warning of another air raid by German bombers. The sound of aircraft engines was getting closer and louder. My mother wrapped me in a blanket and took me down to our garden air raid shelter. I could see the search lights sweeping the sky seeking the bombers whose intent was to destroy London. I could hear the guns on the English coast firing at the German bombers. So it was decided that I was to be evacuated out of London to a surrogate mother in the country for the duration of the war. I was evacuated to Thundersley, Essex for six years. After wars end I returned home to London. I attended school until graduation when I enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1955 and was assigned to an American/RAF air base. I was fascinated by the American life style and I knew that my destiny was to go to America when I was discharged. I made my travel plans and soon embarked to America on the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth and arrived in New York in 1958. Here began my adventures living in New York City and traveling in my old 1952 Chevy on the famous Route 66 to Los Angeles. My adventures continued as I was offered sales jobs that allowed me to travel across America. I was no longer an Englishman, but was now an American citizen.

A smell, a taste, an observation, an occasion, a conversation, a photograph -these are what compel the creation of a sonnet. In this collection, some sonnets are based on the evolution and culmination of relationships, conveying depths of expression and emotion. Some are simple and straightforward, while others are open to a secondary interpretation or a hidden picture. For still others, the transfer of an idea to the concrete can traverse a continuum from reality to fantasy. Above all, these sonnets will spur your imagination and recollection-and isn't that what poetry is all about?

  • - A Retold Story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff
    av Kay Jennings
    249

During the time of the covid we stayed home more. I got to reading old stories. I began to imagine another ending to the stories. Finally, I began writing the ideas down. Once I started, I enjoyed what I was doing. Just imagine being a troll in charge of the only bridge to the pasture on the other side of the stream. You have a cozy home next to the stream under the bridge. The animals have always done as they pleased. Mr. Troll has cleaned the area and mended the bridge. Now he is charging them to cross. The goats are a mess. They could care less. The last time the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff was told, the goats were in charge. Now, Mr. Troll has taken over. He plans to make it better. In the next retold short story, Goldilocks was stuck inside without her companions. She was very adventurous young lady. Finally, she was going on a walk. As she looked about her a new adventure begins to unravel.

The forest can be a source of vibrant life, the locale of lurking danger, a safe sheltering refuge or a path to adventure, and for Momma Kitty and her spirited family, their forest home becomes a land of mystery and miracles, where every new day brings a new experience, presents a new challenge, or lets a new lesson unfold. Just as beyond the forest, every parent lives the joy and pain their children go through, dreams the vision they would bestow upon them, and each yearns to impart the lessons given them as they make their way through the wildland of their own life. And whether you read this book with your child, or your child reads it alone, in the journey with Momma Kitty, her kits and their friends, with The Wise One guiding them all along the way, together you''ll share their life''s joy and pain, join in their dreams, and very likely you''ll see that there''s wondrous lessons yet to learn, waiting to be bestowed to one and all, young or old, that can offer a lifetime of benefit, if applied. And that''s the cat''s truth!Author Patty Shaw describes writing Momma Kitty''s Miraculous Meows:"I witnessed every facet of human pain, conflict, and emotion as a court reporter for over thirty years. After each stressful day of experiencing this, I would come home to my loving cats and soon after, began studying A Course In Miracles, which became my spiritual guidebook. As the personality of each of my cats unfolded before me, so did each principle of the Course I studied, and as both joined in my mind, I began envisioning the story of Momma Kitty, living with her family in their mystical forest home, the guiding voice of The Wise One emerging more clearly as each new adventure unfolded. As I lived Momma Kitty''s journey with her, the guidance of The Course deepened in my own life and The Wise One also spoke to me, giving me the lessons so precious to Momma Kitty. It''s my sincere wish you find them precious, too."She added, "I believe you''ll find as rich vein of enjoyable insight reading Momma Kitty''s Miraculous Meows as I did writing it. And one thing''s for sure, there''s more wisdom adventures ahead for this forest family, as Firefly, his sisters Annie and Molly, elder statesman Fergis, and their new friend Pablo, all join The Wise One as they explore life, living and learning with each new day. We hope you''ll join us..."

  • - A Riverview Animal Shelter Mystery Novel
    av Helen A Bemis
    235,-

What is chutzpah? Dictionary.com gives as synonyms "nerve" and "audacity." The word is Yiddish, and its roots go back to Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus Christ. The dog in the book''s title, Lady, has chutzpah. She is a canine force of nature. When her first owner, "the old man," dies, pregnant Lady, then temporarily at the Riverview Animal Shelter, becomes the pet of criminologist Alice, a woman with a full supply of audacity herself. Her husband, Art, is the RAS veterinarian. Before leaving RAS, Lady gives birth to two pups, and Alice and Art and daughter Katie adopt both Lady and one puppy, Princess. Soon Alice would have a crime puzzle: from RAS, someone steals Lady''s brother. Who would dognap a pup? And why?Ben''s adopted elder brother, Harold, lost his pinochle partner, Helene, to the warmer weather of the South, but soon found another partner, Bonnie. They usually played five-handed pinochle, a cut-throat winner-takes-all type of game. No gambling was involved, but they fought hard to win, sometimes breaking the rules.Breaking the rules was a bit of a habit for Bonnie. She came under suspicion in the disappearance from RAS, during an overnight storm, of the dog eventually named "Duke," Lady''s male puppy.RAS dog trainers Skippy and Olivia prepared an Obedience Demonstration Match for Riverview, exciting the town and making Sandy jealous of the relationship developing between her two employees, revealing to her how much she had fallen for Skippy. But how did he feel about her?The Match held some surprises, including an unexpected reunion. A virus from abroad had reached New York City and, soon after, it invaded Riverview, jeopardizing lives and changing plans. "Man proposes. God disposes." Helen Bemis has written over a dozen novels about her fictional Riverview community, incorporating her knowledge of people, dogs, and business to shape stories that have cozy mysteries and valuable insights.

Priesthood is open to men only. It''s been that way for centuries in the Catholic church and is often referred to as a vocation...a special calling by God himself. But men are not perfect. Like the first apostles, they are flawed human beings, and can succumb to temptation. They can seek forgiveness, be sincere in their determination to sin no more, and receive absolution...like all of us humans. But then a secondary temptation may emerge: the cover up.Meet the friends who went through the seminary together and have known each other for twenty years. They are musically talented and meet each month for the sheer enjoyment of making music. They play on occasion for charity functions to the delight of parishioners. None were for pay until now. This venue is much different. They are asked to do a favor for a friend and fill in for a band of musicians who unexpectedly canceled their slot in a Manhattan nightclub. It leads to three consecutive Fridays, their clerical status a secret. The lead singer, Father David Bell, is captivated by a female fan, Susie, and after the third Friday performance, the two rendezvous for a cocktail and end up in bed. On the 2AM drive back from Brooklyn to Dave''s parked car in Manhattan, Susie hits a pedestrian. The street is deserted, and David and Susie rationalize the decision to flee the scene. David and Susie both have reasons for concealing their involvement and agree that they can call for help once they return to Manhattan. David alerts 9-1-1 but he doesn''t provide his name. He justifies this decision as protecting the church from embarrassment should the truth get out.Law enforcement tracks Father David Bell via his cell phone. After face-to-face interrogation, Dave admits that he was near the scene of the accident that morning, with a woman. He confesses to breaking his vow of celibacy but says that the screech of tires came from behind. The driver of that vehicle stopped so Dave and his companion kept going, under the assumption that an animal ran into the driver''s path. He claimed that he had second thoughts when they got back to Manhattan and dialed 9-1-1. The detectives are not convinced, and mention that they can examine cameras located around the tunnel into Manhattan.Days later, Dave faces extortion attempts. First, Susie pays a reputed Russian mobster to have her car disappear and fabricates a report of theft. She learns that David Bell is a priest and asks him to share the expense. The Russian mobster does his own investigation and realizes that blackmail of a Catholic priest would be simple and low risk. Finally, the homeless man''s cousin overhears Dave at the hospital asking the sedated patient for forgiveness and puts two and two together.Father Bell continues to think he can lie his way out of this mess, even as his plan is unraveling. His brother''s unexpected death is the wake-up call. David shares the truth with his bishop, his family, and his friends, along with a plan to make amends. In so doing, he unwittingly makes them a party to the cover up.And then there''s Clare, his brother''s wife. He has loved her since the day of his ordination, a twenty-year friendship. A temptation not to be acted upon...again.
