Every child needs a mentor, but especially the Black male. In many homes today, the average male will not have a positive role model in his life. He, too, may not experience a Black male teacher and in some cases an athletic coach either. What has happened to the Black male population? Why are so many Black male students gone missing in classrooms and what has happened to them after high school? In this book the authors write together to capture your attention on how to captivate and encourage the average Black male from rural and inner city school districts. This book is written off of experience and of good conscience of how we must raise up the Black male and inspire him to want to do better but most of all be better. How do we go from being distant with the Black male to establishing a mentoring relationship that is lasting and trusting? The authors will open your eyes to a new journey of how to make communities strong again. Connection to the classroom and to the community is the start to any child''s trust but it goes deeper with the Black male in schools today. They need more from you and after reading this book, you will know exactly where to begin and how to continue your new established relationship with one another. This reflective devotional journal for Christian educators is intended to help educators (at all levels and in any environment) gain encouragement through God''s word, reflect on current practices, and set intentional goals that foster student learning in a positive way. The year is 1939. Seven kids and our parents living in a three-bedroom house with no indoor plumbing. Nevertheless, we were happy and things were going great until 1941, when my mother was committed to the West Virginia State Mental Hospital. She was diagnosed with Schizophrenia, and would spend the next 19 years of her life there. My dad was faced with raising seven kids between the ages of two and 14 years old. People have often asked me how my dad was able to overcome such a task. I would always tell them that it was with his strong faith in God and two nails. My dad had driven two nails in the wall behind the old wood-burning cook stove, and left them sticking out about half an inch. Upon those two nails he placed two long stem switches from his rose bush, minus the stickers. My dad was a religious man and he believed in the old saying, "Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child." It can truly be said that George Evans didn't have any spoiled children. He was practicing tough love long before it ever became a buzzword. I think that each one of us felt the pain from those switches, but I don't think we were ever punished for the same thing twice. Once was certainly enough. Somehow we all managed to get through those hard times and all seven kids graduated from Big Creek High School. My dad's name was never listed in Forbes magazine as one of the richest men in the world, but if there was ever a list of fathers who were most loved and respected by his kids, I think that the name George W. Evans would be at the top. We owe him so much for keeping us all together after our mother was hospitalized.

The Index of family names in Gladys Lovrien Lasser's book of 1986, The Lovrien Family History and Genealogy includes 521 individuals who are descendants of Lovriens who settled in Humboldt County, Iowa. Their origin can be traced back to one ancestor, John Lovering (1637-1668) who emigrated from England to the Plymouth Colonies in about 1654. Lovering families settled around Salisbury, New Hampshire. 100 years later, 1754, the name Lovering was changed to Lovrien with the birth of Samuel Lovrien (1754-1829). Samuel Lovrien's grandson, George Washington Lovrien, died at thirty-three years of age in 1854 in Vermont. His widow, Sophia Bixby Lovrien, remarried John Willey. The first Lovrien to go west was her oldest son, George Henry in 1867 following the end of the Civil War. He began farming in Humboldt County, Iowa, in 1870. Sophia and her husband moved to Rutland Township, Humboldt County, Iowa, with her two sons in 1870. The families of the three sons, George Henry, Francis Hoyt and James Monroe are the origin of all the Lovriens that began in Humboldt county. Many of the early Lovriens are buried in the Union Cemetery at Humboldt, including Sophia who died in 1877. This revision of Gladys Lasser's book, adds individuals to the Lovrien list and provides information about descendants of George Washington Lovrien that has become available through informative data resources.
