  • - Special Memories
    av Joy Devos
    279

Joy DeVos has written a tale of two unlikely friends, a pet lamb, Little Guy, and his shepherd, Levi. The two friends love spending time together under their favorite tree, which they call their Remembering Tree, sharing memories of the past. Good memories and not so good memories, they are all open for discussion between these two friends. Some of their memories include: Little Guy getting stuck in some berry bushes, Little Guy getting attacked by a wolf, Little Guy leading some of his friends on an adventure that almost cost the life of one of them, and Little Guy going to school, are just a few of the adventures Little Guy has on his insatiable quest to learn new stuff. Little Guy has a difficult time going about learning new stuff the right way. He and his shepherd, spend a lot of time going to visit the Jesus Shepherd and praying for help. After sharing their memories, and before heading back to the sheepfold, the two friends decide to take a short nap under their tree. When they awake, they have a BIG surprise awaiting them. This story of unconditional love, honesty, trust, forgiveness and friendship, helps instill these qualities in children aged five to ten as well as younger children who have the book read to them. You will love reading about Little Guy. One reader remarked that she would not eat lamb chops again after falling in love with Little Guy.

  • - A Yellow Martyr
    av Walter T Hughes Jr
    289,-

John Henry Erskine, MD (1834-1878) "was a young man of large mold, physically perfect, very tall and very strong. His handsome face was lighted with a perpetual smile. Good nature, good heart and cheerful soul were convictions his manner carried to every beholder. He was a manly man." So go the words of his eulogy after he died a martyr serving his patients during the catastrophic Yellow Fever epidemic of 1878 that destroyed Memphis. This biography chronicles his life from birth and early childhood in Huntsville, AL, to college at the University of Virginia and New York University School of Medicine where he received a MD degree at the age of 24 years; to military service in the Civil War where he rose from a young Assistant Surgeon to Medical Director of General Johnston's Army of 100,000 men, having served gallantly on the front line at Shiloh and other major battles; and, to postbellum Memphis where he resumed his medical practice, was elected Health Officer for the city and worked to exhaustion and death in the Yellow Fever epidemic. The last chapter, "The Irony of it All", carries a somber message to a civilized society.

What do you give someone who has given you everything? What do you give your mother as a birthday present when she turns ninety years old? I gave my mother this story that you are about to read. My sister asked my mother what kind of party she wanted and with the wink of an eye she exclaimed, "a tea party!" Invitations were sent out to one and all to have "Tea with the Queen." You were to wear your finest tea party attire; suits, ties, dresses and of course, hats. I sat down to read my new fairy tale to my mother and her guests from a copy I had printed by the local printer, with clip art I found on the internet and bound in black vinyl, I began to read the story aloud. You see, I come from a long line of storytellers. From my grandmother, to my nieces and nephews, we loved standing up to retell the history of our family.

  • - Visual and Poetic Works of an Outsider
    av Doris Mae Kyllo
    459

Many have written poetry, as an artful expression, playful rhyme, romantic sonnet or whimsical exploration of life's deeper meaning. Doris Mae Kyllo has accomplished all of these through her recollections over the course of 90 years. Inspired during countless miles of walking, encounters with nature, reflection on lives long gone or a collision course with what was into what is, her poems and prose number in the thousands and counting. They flow from her soul in a continuous stream that is unstoppable. Doris interprets life through a unique lens of gritty reality that's been softened by years and a passion to find beauty where ugliness threatens to destroy all semblance of it. Family legends trace this love of words to relations with Robert Frost. However, the only proof lies in the evidence of her insatiable appetite to paint pictures with words.

Did Someone Really Boil a Baby? Something happened to the baby. What happened to the baby is unknown. Henry Dozier was both a talented Victorian architect and a troubled soul. In 1897 he moved to Cripple Creek from Denver, presumably to rebuild a town destroyed by 2 devastating fires. According to the newspapers he was also dissipating his income in dissolute behavior. On 4 February 1897 there was an impassioned letter to the editor from Celestia Dozier, head of the household in Denver in spite of the fact that she was only sixteen years old. Celestia noted that her father was supporting his family as best that he could under the circumstances, and that the newspaper report that her mother tried to boil the baby was incorrect. The editor noted that he had the clippings. We haven't been able to find that report but the Rocky Mountain News reported that it was a hoax perpetrated by the competing morning newspaper. The boiled baby story had legs and was discussed in the Denver Daily News as late as 20 December 1897. Dozier was arrested for not supporting his family and left town one step in front of the law. The Denver Post noted in 1898, in discussing his lack of support of his family, that he had 9 children. The Rocky Mountain News reported the same thing in 1897. The 1910 census reported that he had 9 children of which 8 were living. There seems to be a missing child here somewhere, perhaps because it was boiled. Our attempts to find it have been futile.

Accused by his schoolmates of killing Jesus, by 1938 ten-year-old Markus Orbach had already endured years of bullying and beating by his anti-Semitic schoolmates in the tiny town of Zolynia, Poland, where he lived. In 1939 life got much worse. The Nazis invaded. Over the next five years, ninety percent of Poland's three and a half million Jews were exterminated by the Nazis, including most of Markus' greater family. He managed to escape to Russian territory, only to find himself shipped across a continent to a settlement camp deep in the wasteland of Siberia. There was no plumbing. There was no heat. There was no food. Through his persistent will, his refusal to succumb and his ingenuity for survival, Markus was able to take the briefest moments of opportunity fate mercifully provided him and turn them into support for his family in a war ravaged Berlin before finally arriving in America in 1949. His story is an important one, not only to his family, but to anyone seeking an example of humble fortitude in the face of an adversity few men will ever have to confront, let alone overcome. Markus' story will shift any reader's life into a new perspective.
