  • av Donald Cifarelli
    279

Donald Cifarelli was born to be a soldier: he came into the world on March 4th, 1924-and in one way or another, marching forth is what he's always done. At the age of four, he arrived at Ellis Island, and a year later, watched the American Dream tatter and fade with the onset of The Great Depression. But The Reluctant Warrior is the memoir of a man who saw what he wanted in the great United States and embraced life in America with a full and open heart. This is the story of his journey from a colorful childhood as an immigrant in Brooklyn to assimilation into American culture, and the fateful day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when he heard President Roosevelt's "Day of Infamy" speech and knew that he would fight to preserve the freedom that was America's promise. Along with the horrors of war in North Africa and in Italy during the final campaign that ended WWII, Donald unexpectedly found love, which had to survive long months of separation and uncertainty. After being reunited at the end of the war, the Cifarellis faced the task of rejoining everyday society, and struggling to find work and realize their dream of a home and family. Candid, detailed, deeply personal yet broadly relatable, The Reluctant Warrior is a vivid picture of the historical arc of the 20th century in America.

This concise yet exciting novel shall invariably remain unique within the realm of cult classics. There are many contributing factors to employing this distinctively out-side-of-the-box thinking found within the scope of this novel's adept ability to never apply any regular names to the characters. Instead, your author has chosen to assign a name to each person, or either by some other mentally flash-frozen character facet. This affords the readers the opportunity to expand their imaginations to fit every character, and could further prove to be employed as a powerful teaching tool. Further, the novel's main character of the Box Topped Bandit and his small black accomplice (the Kid) set out to slice open as many Pillsbury Cake mix boxes as possible to find a golden ticket that will permit the Bandit an airfare to anywhere in the world. Of course, all of this has to be done with great stealth, as the Bandit is already a known figure and on the run. But, this comic caper combines the elements of crime, constant calamities, a clash between the titans of power (the Suits), a spectacular food fight involving (the Yellar Checked Fellar), an overall power-to-the-people struggle, and even a damsel in distress. Yes, a comic classic that should go down in the annals as a one-of-a-kind novel, all written from the refreshing perspective of a young black kid that told this entire tale. Truly a remarkable read and well worth every cent spent on such a distinctly devised adventure.

  • av Dawn Crystal
    179,-

An Alternative to Drugs for Pain Relief... Dawn Crystal is a pioneer of sound-energy pain therapy. She makes pain-relieving sounds with her voice, a gift she discovered as an adult. She has done this for over 20 years, with individuals or groups. Imagine a world free of pain. Imagine if sources of pain could be fixed immediately. Imagine being pain-free fast and easy. This is Dawn's mission. She tunes in to people and sometimes "sees" a blockage in the body, which may need attention. Her goal is to stop pain by keeping energy flowing through the body, and her sounds provide "Sonic Drano" for blockage-release in minutes. She does not claim to be a medical professional. This is alternative help, working with "life force energy," what the Chinese and acupuncturists call chi. PAIN FREE includes examples of Dawn's techniques as applied to sufferers of pain and anxiety and presents some techniques the reader can do on his or her own. You should read this book if you are in pain or you know someone who is, and you or they have tried many different techniques, without success, to get remission from pain. "I like PAIN FREE Made Crystal Clear! because it clearly says you don't have to accept pain and suffering in your life. There are ways to find relief and clearing and healing that complement traditional medicine. You give the reader options for self-care. You give the reader hope. Poetry is a language that communicates with passion, by way of heart to heart and mind to mind. It is a way to unveil the meaning in life and help us elicit the essence of our feelings and thoughts. Our thoughts make us who we are. Hence, by design, our thoughts are our primal destiny. The poems in Primal Destiny are smart and eloquent-yet soothing in their rhythm and flow. Each is written to help the reader or listener dig deeper into meaning and to ponder the value of relationships such as friendships. And by confronting their own truths or beliefs, the reader/listener will touch upon their deepest inner wisdom as well as their sense of direction in life.

For many years now, I have wanted to write about my life, and especially about some of the people in my life. I'm sorry to say that due to my lack of faith in my writing skills, I gave up many times. In those days, I thought I wouldn't live past sixty years old, but here I am-ninety years old, and still going strong. Well, not so strong, but people are surprised when I tell them how old I am! And would you believe it-due to the encouragement of a few of my family, friends, VA doctors, nurses, and counselors, I have completed this book about the first seventeen-and-a-half years of my life, and I have almost completed a book that ends on the year of my twenty-first birthday. And if the readers of this book will do the math, they will realize that I have a lot more writing to do!

  • - African American Congregations
    av Annisteen Tate Cammack
    195,-

Recognizing and successfully navigating conflict in an African-American church congregation is a major challenge for both clergy and laity. In Culture and Conflict: African-American Congregations, Dr. Annisteen Tate-Cammack explores how culture influences the recognition and resolution of conflict in predominately African American congregations. Black people have developed their own distinctive culture and worldviews as parallels-not replicas- to mainstream culture. These distinct forms of culture and worldviews influence almost every facet of life, including the worship experience-and clergy and laity both must be sensitive to these differences in examining disharmony in the church. Culture and Conflict addresses a subject that has been long overlooked and largely understudied: Does the uniqueness of African-American culture impact the way discord is managed in predominately African-American congregations?

  • av Joe Montano
    249

At its core, The Half-Breed Horse Thief is a poetic memoir, non-linear in its landscape of experience and fragmented memories. A disparaging term made poetic, the title represents someone from a mixed background who, so to find themselves within disparate cultures without inheritance, must become a bandit, a punk, must steal by adapting, moving chameleon-like between houses, states & countries; when mixed race, you must thieve culture you are not given outright, are not sheltered with since birth - displaced inside feeling on the outside of both. Within the story are its parts - distinct - but the whole is not there. A mixture of straight-forward & skirting, curious sense of humor, musing through an abstract lens, nit-picking at memories, finding truths & untruths. The fine edged tool of Years shouldered by universal themes of the Blues and Astronauts Landing. Uncovering the self, and balance, through the sparse beauty of graffiti, and the fullness of finding family.

What makes a j. ron lewis poem so memorable is the rhyming. Once you hear a ''j. ron'' it will stick in your head because of the way it flows and rhymes; each verse will seem a classic for the age we live. The three dozen poems presented here will make one think and, help one understand reality or, accept the worst of it! Some of the poems are quite personal and, were almost left out of the work. But, realizing that the exposure of those poems could be of value to someone themselves experiencing ''bumps''...the expressions were left in the publication at the author''s humble expense. Remember: poetry is meant to be read aloud...this is especially true for a j. ron lewis.

  • av Brian Nelson
    195,-

The world in a book. 13 years ago, I took a fantastic world trip that planted a seed of adventure. Since then, I have made many international trips. The country count has gone from only the USA to over 190 countries and seven continents. The love of travel has gone from my love of the highway as an over-the-road truck driver to a love of international experience. The book was written to show what's out there based on my own experiences, to offer ideas on how you can do the same thing, or simply to change the way you see the world. The world is big, but surprisingly accessible. I don't want to tell people where to go. I only want to plant a seed, to get people interested in going beyond the borders, to see a bigger world. Travel isn't meant for the wealthy alone, but for anyone with a heart for adventure and understanding. It retraces my time before travel, notes experiences in every country I visited in the past 13 years, and offers ideas on how to travel as I did. I hope I can at least get people to see a better, less restricted world. Come on, the world is waiting.

  • - Dwight D. Eisenhower, Gray Flannel Suits, and the Men of the Greatest Generation
    av Peter M Nadeau
    309,-

Dutiful Men is the story of the men of the greatest generation and their legendary leader Dwight Eisenhower. This is the definitive account of the men who were born at the beginning of the twentieth century, survived the Great Depression, won the Second World War, and built a new America after the challenges of their youth. Dutiful Men tells their story as men revealing for the first time the origins of their common understanding of manhood and how that concept was modeled by their general and president. "I Like Ike" was more than a campaign slogan from the gray-flannel-suited men of the 1950s. It reflected an adherence to a man as well as his model of manhood. Historians have previously studied how conceptions of male identity have informed, shaped, and altered the American presidency, but Dwight Eisenhower and his administration have thus far been neglected in these studies. Dutiful Men examines Eisenhower's understanding of what it means to be a man and how that definition emerged, challenged, overtook, and eventually surrendered to modern constructions of masculinity. Dutiful Men is a must-read for anyone interested in or related to a man of the greatest generation.
