WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN is a collection of short stories, poems and personal essays. Many have been published, and most have won prizes in literary contests."Just quit your bitchin' and let me drive," college president Clarence Rally growled at his wife, Lucy, as he turned left on a one-way street marked, "No Left Turn.""Your attitude is irritating beyond belief," she snapped. Car horns blared at them. "Do you want to get us killed?"Like a race car driver, President Rally hunkered down over the steering wheel. "What I want is for you to stop nagging," he growled again."Then for God's sake, pay attention! You've got to get off this street!""And you've got to get off my back!""Well, why in God's name did you give me the map and ask for directions? You've ignored everything I've said!" An excerpt from the short story, "A Story of An Hour." THE FUNERAL OF A FIRST HUSBANDWhat do you do about your first husband's funeral? if you were his second wife and three more followed along with no-telling-how-many girlfriends? Do you wear black or another solemn color and waltz in with a flair? Do you send flowers or a card to the widow? commiserating? congratulating? For advice with this social conundrum, whom do you ask? Miss Manners? Dear Abby? Dear Ann? Erma Bombeck would have made a wry comment. Alas, she's not commenting anymore. If all the ex-wives and girlfriends attended the service as a herd, you could sit together and raise a loud lamentation about what a sorry son-of-a-bitch he was. But that would embarrass the children and grandchildren and one great, on the way, now a sizeable bump beneath your granddaughter's green jacket sitting at the front of the church with the rest of the family. Yours and his. So out of love for the treasured bump, you, along with your second husband, teeth clenched; both go to your first husband's funeral. And you might even manage to cry. A little. A friend of mine gave me a darling package of cocktail napkins. Each napkin reads, "Men are like a fine wine. They start out as grapes. It's our job to stomp on them until they mature into something you would like to have dinner with."Ain't it the truth, honey.Last year during the holidays, this package of napkins gave me hope and inspiration. While shopping, decorating, and wrapping gifts, I entertained secret thoughts about reforming, or "putting the stomp," on my husband.I used to stomp him pretty well, but in the last few years I've gotten lax, and he isn't even close to being fine wine. Instead, he's still a messy old grape. What the Cat Dragged In is a collection of the funny and sad, delightful and profound. Each piece leaves us with the vibrations of this stunningly witty author, through whom it passed. Accolades, Ms. Stephenson, a standing ovation. I've read each one, over and over - and here I go again. ~ Carolyn Wall, author of Sweeping Up Glass and Playing with Matches

  • - A Search for Family Heritage
    av Robert J Taylor
    265,-

Each year millions of people search for clues about where they came from and who they are. That's where his story begins. Urged on by his mother's advancing Alzheimer's, he turned to her aging siblings for the family stories only they knew, before they too faded into the firmament. Over hours of shared laughter, tears, and dark coffee, he learned that his mother was the personification of the classic American myth: a child of Swedish immigrants, born in a log cabin, delivered by a midwife, she walked two miles through the snow to a one room school. Her parents struggled as homesteaders in the decimated forests of Minnesota's far north and on the unforgiving plains of northeastern Montana. They faced the threats of poverty, drought, the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918, and the Great Depression with stoic courage. Theirs is an American story of hope, hardship, and determination that spans the first half of the twentieth century, an era that rewove the fabric of our country. For him, it was a personal journey of heartache, inspiration, and the discovery of what it means to be family.

  • - A True Crime Story of Depravity and Obsession During the Great Depression
    av Michael Grimm
    285,-

It was one of the bleakest times in US history, the Great Depression. People were desperate, some to believe neighbors would help each other while others were desperate to claw their own way to survival, no matter the cost. High in the Cascade Mountain Range, a destitute family and a man using all his wiles to save himself from a similar fate crossed paths. The results were destructive and deadly. The Grimm family, author Michael Grimm's own ancestors, befriended a seemingly harmless drifter. In the months that followed, the family found no peace but was instead tormented by him. His eventual prosecution received national attention. The Grimm family still carries the scars of those events. As a forensic scientist for four decades, Grimm knows first-hand not only the generational pain of such an event but the research behind such pain. Tell Edith Goodbye: A True Crime Story of Depravity and Obsession During the Great Depression reminds us that regardless of who you are and where you live, horrific things can occur without provocation.

  • - Evidence of Extinct Life on Mars
    av Michael D Moore
    475,-

The author has provided descriptions of each image along with a link that will take the reader directly to the raw image on the official government website where it can be seen. Many of the images contain the mummified and fossilized remains of creatures that once lived within Gale Crater on Mars. Curiosity’s mission was to discover if conditions on Mars were ever favorable for the emergence of life. That mission was accomplished in the first quarter of 2013, when the rover drilled holes in the Martian bedrock at two locations, John Klein and Cumberland. In addition to drilling and analyzing soil, Curiosity inadvertently captured the remains of extinct life upon the surface and within outcrops. These images show that life follows the same patterns on Mars and Earth. They also indicate that as we move outward into the Universe the pattern for life will remain the same. A duck on Earth, a duck on Mars and a duck found within the farthest reaches of the Universe will look the same.

  • - Basketball and Bird Dogs
    av Luke Mooneyham
    189,-

NO TRUMP! NO TRUMP! Everybody's screaming NO TRUMP!This book is about observations. It has been this authors observation that to be successful with no trump, one must have the lead. One must have Aces to lead with, followed by Kings, then Queens or a succession of suited cards sufficient to exhaust the opponents supply of said suit. What? All the no trump screaming is not about card games? Perhaps I wasn't paying attention. Or, maybe I was. You won't find politics or discussions of my political views in this book. Not because I don't have the courage of my convictions, but because I don't want to alienate half the potential readers of my book. Making observations is a key life skill. One cannot go through life not paying attention and expect to be successful. This book began as an instructional document about the correct method for shooting a basketball. When everything needed for shooting a basketball was written, there were three paragraphs. The remainder of the book was added to include enough material to make it a legitimate book and to enhance the reader's enjoyment. If you like basketball, bird dogs, poker, fiery preachers, or watching grandchildren, you are a candidate to like this book. If you enjoy life and if you haven't already quit reading, it's guaranteed. You will like this book.

For ninety years, from the first European invasion of North America above Mexico in 1521 until 1610, Spanish, French, and English would-be colonists repeatedly mounted incursions into eastern Canada and in the United States from Maine to Florida and across the south from North Carolina to California. By June 7, 1610, less than a thousand Europeans resided permanently in North America above Mexico. Native Americans, at a terrible cost in lives lost to European diseases, had successfully prevented Europeans from invading their land. The Second Invasion of North America Above Mexico, The First Ninety Years: Indigenous Americans' Successful Defense Against Europeans, 1521 to 1620, is the first book to focus exclusively on these pre-colonial years and the interactions of Native Americans and Europeans.Calvin D. Trowbridge, Jr., is the author of two books on the beginning of the United States and Canada, covering the period from 1492 to 1640, and a biography of Marconi, the inventor of long-distance wireless communication. It is common knowledge that a group of birds is referred to as a flock. Some particular species have their own names, such as a "Gaggle of Geese" or lesser known example is a "Murder of Crows". Other specific groups in the animal kingdom include a "Pride of Lions" or a "Pack of Wolves". In the primate world a group of chimpanzees is called a "Congress". Seems befitting. A group of gorillas is called a "Band of Gorillas". Of particular interest, as it may relate to this story, there is a little known species of gorillas that existed thousands of years ago. They were in the genus Gigantopithecus. No one really knows how big they were, but from the few fossils found, it was determined that they were the largest known apes that ever lived. In other classifications, like those of humans beings, there are many different ways to refer to specific groups. For instance, they can be described by regions, religions, families, communities, townships or classes. As an example, a term used for different groups of the native people of Ireland, were called Clans. Further, the people of Ireland in general were commonly referred to as Irish Gaelic. The Irish Gaelic, were considered by many, to be the true natives of Ireland. That was until Vikings started plundering Ireland. This went on for centuries. These Vikings were dreaded and feared by all of Ireland. The Vikings were notorious for kidnapping the indigenous people of Ireland and selling them into slavery. The Vikings were also notorious for other crimes such as robbery, theft, rape and murder. These bands of foreign invaders were mostly comprised of Teutons, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. Many of which were of the Presbyterian denomination. Large groups of these unwanted invaders, eventually migrated to Ireland and made it their permanent home. They became prevalent in the population and their political power grew in proportion. With intermarriages between the natives of the land, and the immigrants, some of the earliest towns were established, including Dublin, Wesford, Cork and Limerick. Eventually, these immigrants were absorbed into the religious and political life of the country, adopting the Irish language and customs. This story is of a particular Irish Clan Leader, who was willing to do most anything, including falling back on the ways of the Vikings, to support his followers. He and many members of his Clan, set off on a voyage to a remote, unchartered island in order to find an alleged treasure. What they found was much more than they could have imagined or ever bargained for.

  • - A Catholic Evangelist Handbook for Saving Souls
    av Jerad P Bisson
    345,-

Evangelization is essential to Christianity, nearly every denomination of Christianity in one form or another has a means to evangelize for their church. Catholics are not experts at this and that's ok, because power is perfected in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9 NASB). Many Catholics have trouble in a debate with an evangelical Christian because they usually are very well versed in the bible and Catholic's usually are lacking in this area. Wouldn't it be great if we didn't have to have all the scripture pertaining to our Catholic faith memorized in our minds so that we could simply pull out a book and turn to an already marked page to use scripture to counteract the heresies of our times? Well now you do, this book is meant to be used for Catholic evangelization. Evangelicals may be well versed in the bible, but they tend to avoid scripture that pertains to our Catholic faith. With this book you can present your reasons why you are Catholic effortlessly. All by using scripture and logic, I have written explanations to many of the reasons why we Catholics believe what we believe, and I have compiled plenty of scripture that supports all our beliefs. No more using your phone that won't load during a debate. No more taking to much time to search the scriptures to find the right verse with the short amount of time that you will have during your discussion, because people lose interest quickly and will stop listening. We have set out to help Christ save souls and to peak their interest. Simply mark each page that has scripture references so that you can quickly turn to them and instantly you have defended your case in the name of Christ and his bride the Catholic church. If used properly not another Catholic will be intimidated to stand firm in a religious debate with evangelicals, Its time to put on the armor of God! To speak boldly and proclaim the truth! To stand up for righteousness and Justice and to proclaim to the world and to the heresies that seek to overrun it, that the Catholic church belongs to Christ.
