  • - How I survived 40 years of my dream job in TV news (and cancer too)
    av Al Wallace
    259,-

"One For The Coyotes" chronicles the life of Al Wallace, who grew up in a military family in the 1960s and 70s, living in both the United States and Germany. During his early years he became fascinated with history, the Civil Rights Movement and early stages of television. At the foundation of his youth was the discipline he learned from his father, and his high school and college years in the football-crazy state of Texas. Al fashioned his work-ethic from both his family life and football to propel him into a career in television news and sports that transcended five decades and 40 years."One for the Coyotes" is a mantra that Al learned from his high school football coach, legendary coach Frank Beavers. Coach Beavers believed that in order to be the best you had to work as hard as the best. The best high school football program in North Texas in the 1960s and early 70s was the Wichita Falls High School Coyotes. In order to beat the Coyotes, you had to work harder than you ever had before. If you were doing reps in the weight room, you did an extra rep in order to beat the Coyotes. If you were running laps, you ran an extra lap to beat the Coyotes. If you were ready to quit, you kept going to beat the Coyotes. That mindset got shortened to "one for the Coyotes." It's the mindset Al applied to every aspect of his career and his life.Of those 40 years, 33 were spent at WDAF, Kansas City's oldest and most trusted television station. His tenure as a sports anchor and reporter in Kansas City gave him unprecedented access to the region's favorite sports teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. It also allowed him to establish working relationships with some of the region's most popular and newsworthy coaches and athletes. The relationships that he cultivated with those in and around the Kansas City sports community helped him persevere in one of the most demanding and challenging industries of our time. While working in Kansas City, Al's personal life became uniquely attached to the town of Lawrence, Kansas. There he met his wife and became captivated by the role Lawrence played in the history of the area, and even the roots of the Civil War. Lawrence also is home to the University of Kansas, an educational, historical and cultural rival to the University of Missouri, just two hours away in Columbia. You don't cover sports for four decades without becoming a fan to a certain extent. Al always was careful not to let his personal feelings affect his objectivity, but his proximity to the Kansas basketball program created a fondness that he acknowledges and welcomes. Therefore, he was glad that Kansas basketball coach Bill Self agreed to write the foreword for the book.Bill Self is one of only eight coaches in Kansas' storied basketball program history, and Al had the opportunity to interact with three of them, including Larry Brown and Roy Williams.Throughout his life, Al's unwanted relationship with cancer finally caught up to him in a very personal way. He had to find a way to battle prostate cancer, while dealing with how it affected the lives of his family and close friends, as well as others who dealt with the disease."One For The Coyotes" is Al's account of his life, his career in television news, his fight to survive and raise awareness of cancer, his affection for the success that true teamwork can bring, and most of all, his love of family.

The New York City You Don't SeeThis is the city tourists don't see and most New Yorkers - the ones with jobs, the ones with money, the ones who own homes - don't even know about. It's the city where the hookers and pimps and strippers live and survive, where the predators exist and prey on the rest of us and on each other, the city where violence is commonplace and nearly always present. It's midtown Manhattan where visitors come to see shows and eat in fancy restaurants and sleep in expensive hotels but it's also where the furnished rooms and SRO's are, where the chicken hawks work the streets and docks, where weapons are always close to hand and the police write off murders and assaults. It's the world of John Board and John Puddle and others like them. This is book number two of twelve. The first, The Man With The Pointy Stick, introduced John Puddle. This book is about John Board. If you liked or were intrigued by the first one you'll like this as well.

There was this white dog with a puppy cut. It was found mutilated at the top of a tree. How did it happen? That's the mystery. No murder mystery though. After all, it's a dog. Dense PI Jack and his smart lady friend Julie, clueless cops, Birdman Fritz, Jungle Tom, and others make for mystery as farce. It's all humor about a dimly lit time and very gray place. Who says so? I do. Who? The author of a "how did it happen" rather than a "who done it."

A Natural Alternative to Taking Drugs for Elevating Your HappinessWe all know how it feels to be happy. We just don't know how to generate this feeling consistently. Ideally, we would arrange our lives to be happy all the time, or at least when things aren't going to hell in our vicinity. The chapters in this book explore various approaches to pursuing happiness: money, long life, fame, looks, homes, cars, religion, children, friends, business success, health, talent, love, luck, pets. None of these guarantees happiness. Dawn Crystal is a pioneer of sound-energy therapy. She makes pain- and fear- and anxiety-relieving sounds with her voice, a gift she discovered as an adult. She tunes into people and sees from their energy the locations of the causes of fear and anxiety. By clearing these energy blockages, Dawn helps her clients find their true selves, the key to greater happiness. Her goal is to help bring people back to their centers, joining body, mind, and spirit. This is alternative help, working with "life force energy," what the Chinese and acupuncturists call "chi." Dawn states, "I wrote this book because I wanted everyone to know that there is hope for becoming happier, naturally, fast, easy, and effectively." Each chapter contains background information on a topic, the possible source of happiness, along with comments and a summary of a session Dawn held with one of her clients that was directed to the topic. Who should read this book? You should read HAPPINESS… if you are suffering from frequent unhappiness or you know someone who is, and you or they have tried many different techniques without success to get relief.

  • av Tony Van Brown

Within the pages of this book, Tony Van Brown opens up God's principles of grace beyond its commonly accepted understanding. And God's principles of the Kingdom of God are revealed exponentially beyond the usual buzzwords and empty slogans that attempt to define the Kingdom of God.Jesus implied that John was not in the Kingdom of God in saying that "he that is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than John." Matt 11 But Jesus did not mean if someone was in heaven that person would be greater than John, because no one went to heaven until Jesus ascended leading captivity captive and John would also be there. Jesus was not implying that John was not saved; on the contrary, John was saved just as much as King David or Elijah or Joshua or any other who might be thought of as being saved. But Jesus was implying that there is a difference between being saved and venturing deeper into the Kingdom of God. Jesus was saying that John did not see the Kingdom of God, nor did he enter into the Kingdom of God.The same way that within the Christian viewpoint we hold the "world" to be more than just a place, but also a system of principles, beliefs, behaviors, and results. The Kingdom of God is a place and also a system of principles, beliefs, behaviors, and kingdom results.Where spiritual gifts are manifested to bring about "Righteousness, Peace, and Joy in the Holy Ghost" in those issues and situations where a mighty move of God is needed, there are yet issues and situations that God has put within your means to bring about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. This is why Jesus declares that "the Kingdom of God is within you."You will come to understand how the Kingdom of God is inside of you and what you are to do with the Kingdom of God.Tony Van Brown is a member and elder at Life in the Word Outreach Ministries in Camden, South Carolina where he served as Co-pastor of two churches. He is a deputy with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.Tony Van Brown is a gifted and prolific teacher of the Word of God. He has a call upon his life to add to the ministries of God's people. To strengthen them in the knowledge of God, further perfecting them for the work of ministry. He holds a degree in Theology from Rhema Christian Bible School. He and his beautiful wife Clatie are the proud parents of three daughters and several grandchildren.

The book was written about living and dealing with a Vietnam Veteran who had severe PTSD from the viewpoint of a person outside the disease and the VA system. Much has been written from the perspective of the afflicted veteran but not as much about how it affects his loved ones and what his life was like. It was not meant to criticize the VA or its hard working employees. The VA system is overwhelmed with the number and seriousness of injured veterans it is being asked to serve. The Vietnam Veterans in particular were not treated promptly when the injury was not physical in nature. Years between injury and any assistance made recovering a normal life very difficult or impossible. Many were left to fend for themselves for many years and forced to fight for treatment which should have been much easier to access. Many never have received treatment or assistance of any substantial nature and have either become hopelessly lost in the homeless population or died from disease or self-inflicted injury. This is the story of a man who, in spite of these things survived and found some happiness in life.

  • - The Adventures of One Molecule of Water Through Two Billion Years on Earth
    av William Krayer
    249

"Hydrie, the Water Molecule"presents a different kind of character for a children's book, moving through long stretches of time and around the world many times in his two billion years on earth. Hydrie is not a "heroic" character - he is not self-actuated - but lots of things happen to him and he is able to observe natural events and talk to other molecules as he participates in a variety of activities where water is present in the world. The normally invisible molecule is uniquely seen in colorful illustrations of life-size events. As fiction, this is an adventure story in which an unusual character - a water molecule named Hydrie - arrives on earth rather stressfully on an asteroid two billion years ago and begins a series of experiences through minerals, plants, animals, clouds, caves, oceans and other environments, observing the changes in the earth and living things.Seen as non-fiction, the book is a tour through major changes in the earth over long periods of time, providing learning opportunities on every page. The elementary reader may readily understand many of the scientific concepts; others are designed to invite further explanation by an adult, but all will incite curiosity. Simple rhymes appear throughout the book to accent the scientific lessons of the story. The reader will come away from the book with a much greater appreciation for geologic time as well as the presence of water everywhere on earth. Throughout his two billion years on earth (so far) Hydrie doesn't change a bit.Water is everywhere on earth - in rivers, lakes and oceans, but also underground, in air, crystals, rocks, plants, animals and people! Hydrie has had two billion years to see many changes in the earth - and to help it change. But Hydrie doesn't change. In his home in a glacier at the end of the book, he is just like he was two billion years ago, looking forward to a few more eons on earth. The author, a semi-retired patent attorney who helps in a children's reading enhancement program, is working on a sequel in which Hydrie helps to germinate a giant redwood tree and is able to help with its growth through the years. The basic functions of water in the germination of seeds and the growth of plants generally will be presented in ways interesting to children. Other water-related subjects will follow in later books.
