This book relates a true and complete description of the author’s descent into delusionary behavior as a fourteen-year-old boy. Years have passed, but he retains a total memory of all that happened to him in that illness. Included are earlier experiences which may have contributed to his illness along with his total exhaustion at that time. Prior to his illness, he had been considered a successful young man in the eyes of his friends, teachers, parents, and coaches. At the time of his illness, he became listed by his high school as a “homebound” student, and he was subject to being admitted to an appropriate hospital should a delusionary experience be repeated.Following his illness, his behavior deteriorated in certain ways in that he committed several delinquent acts for which he could have been arrested. However, with the support of his parents, the Assistant Principal at his high school, and others, he continued to excel in schoolwork and graduated sixth in his class and received a prestigious full, four-year, college scholarship.The author’s hope is that this account will be read with interest by anyone who is involved with adolescent boys and that they should find this book to be of value and assistance should a boy’s delusionary illness arise.

I have watched and photographed it since I was a small child. I have visited most Spanish-speaking countries during my vacations from teaching Spanish. My first trip to Costa Rica was in 1970. My goals in life are to entertain as well as to educate others and to promote conservation. I want everyone to be able to see and to appreciate nature and wildlife; therefore, I write photographic books. Most books describe animals and birds. I want you to see what I see while I travel so that you can understand as much as possible how creatures live, what they eat, how they move, and what they do where they are visible. I tired of studying books talking about ecology and wildlife; I want you to see what each creature looks like and how they act. I chose Spanish-speaking countries for two reasons. First, I speak the language and have photographed everything I could for many years for my students to see as they learned the language. To communicate successfully with people of other countries, you need to understand their customs and culture as well as their language. Second, people are familiar with huge African and Asian animals. Unfortunately, little attention has been paid to the wealth of Latin American wildlife; I am trying to do my bit to help remedy the lack. This work is a memoir about two brothers, sons of first wave Polish immigrants and their dealings with the professional boxing industry and its machinations with the American underworld of the 1930s. Babe Risko (Henry Pelkowski) would go on to win the Middleweight Championship of the World. Brother Vince was his "acting" manager, being at odds more than not with the "Czar" of boxing Frankie Carbo and his mobster minions. Babe's achievement in the ring and continued life in Syracuse, New York was a one and only occurrence for this city and its reputation as an avid sports town. After his untimely death, Risko slowly faded from memory of the local populace. This book told from the point of view of Babe Risko's nephew and godson paints a brief local view taken in the throes of the depression, mass immigration, impending world war, prohibition, and the faiths, secular and non, that drove the culture and commerce of the time. Because of the gap in time periods, much of the research had to do with the passed down oral traditions of families and associations. Consequently, the author takes liberties in embellishments, speculations, and even some fabrication, but always within the realm of plausibility. And humor.
