Carbohydrate Metabolism: Theory and Practical Approach consists of original chapters and provides an updated and unique source of information for all those interested in the fundamentals of carbohydrate metabolism and its associated processes. Although the authors assume that most readers/students have at least introductory knowledge of carbohydrate metabolism, they have attempted to compile and edit the invited chapters written by experts in a way that even a stranger to this field could easily understand and comprehend. The book will be useful for B.Sc., M.Sc., PhDs (Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Botany, Zoology, Bioinformatics, etc), and medical students including MBBSs and MDs in search of a guide to help them through a vast field of knowledge. This book presents new developments in the study of the chemical stage of a radiobiological mechanism. The biological effect of ionizing particles in diploid cells depends on their linear energy transfer (LET) value. While for low-LET particles a pair of DSBs in the same sections of both the equal DNA molecules is to be formed by different particles in a relatively short irradiation interval, the increase of these DSB pairs at higher LET values is given by singular particles. This means that the radiobiological mechanism in physical and biological stages may be understood at least in principle, while the chemical stage represents a still rather open problem. It concerns basic process running in this stage as well as the influence of radiomodifying agents being present in a corresponding water medium during irradiation (mainly for low-LET radiation), which may be important in the regions of radiotherapy as well as radioprotection. It has been commonly assumed that this stage has been mediated by radical clusters formed by a densely ionizing end of secondary electrons. It is evident that only greater radical clusters (being able to form at least two SSBs in a given DNA molecule) may be efficient biologically. These clusters may originate, however, at different distances from DNA molecules present in a cell; they may meet a certain time after (due to heat motion and cluster diffusion). Consequently, the resulting biological effect may be influenced also by chemical processes running in diffusing clusters. A new model of corresponding cluster evolution (based on the use of a continuous Petri net and describing the concurrent influence of cluster diffusion and corresponding chemical reactions) will be presented and the possibility of its use in the analysis of a biological stage will be shown. On the basis of available data, the initial cluster characteristics (the emergence of water radicals) as well as the emergence of other radicals (if corresponding agents are present) may be established. The corresponding influence on the processes running in a biological stage may be estimated as well.

Also in this book, the legitimization of racial discrimination against ethnic minority youthprimarily menat the Danish labour market is examined. The social workers involved in the case study discuss how young ethnic minority men encounter racial discrimination in the workforce as well as describe how this affects their potential in the labour market. The final chapter sets out to emphasize the function of systemic racism and implicit biases in healthcare, describing the way racism impacts health in people of color as well as clinical decision-making.

A review of the modern literature on extraction, filtration, and adsorption that may be combined with advanced oxidation treatments to minimalise the environmental impact of the remaining wastes is presented, especially focusing on phenolic compounds recovery from olive mill liquidwastes. Lastly, the authors provide an overview on the antiradical and antioxidizing properties of calix[n]arenes and calix[n]resorcinols as part of a larger discussion on the impact of preorganization of antioxidant fragments attached to calix[n]arene and calix[n]resorcinol scaffolds and their intramolecular synergy on antioxidant activity.

As humanity progresses into the 21st century, the needs of the future can sometimes be uncertain. There is one thing that is certain: we will still need Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education. Students who have a solid and integrated understanding of STEM fields are more likely to contribute to a world economy. Also, their creativity and ingenuity are needed to improve quality of life from local to global standards. This book uses literacy to develop effective and versatile cross curricula STEM activities. Twenty strategies are included, covering mathematics, science, engineering, technology, reading, and writing as well as English and social studies. Each strategy includes learning objectives, assessments and uses playful and innovative methods to engage students in working with STEM subjects. Students will explore, invent, build, problem solve and be actively engaged in the learning process. These STEM strategies provide a wide range of options that will inspire teachers to further develop effective and engaging lessons.

In this volume the consequences of entrapment in insecure, low-status/low wage jobs of migrants and how these affect their decision to return to their origin countries via the AVRR Program during the economic crisis in Greece are examined using results from in-depth interviews. The authors suggest that regardless of the socioeconomic conditions in their origin country, workers are negatively impacted due to prolonged stay and isolation in jobs with low or zero social and labor mobility, thus promoting their entrapment. Additionally, ethnic, racial and gender division of labor alienates workers from primary and secondary solidarity groups and ties related to their origin county. In a different study, 475,760 fifteen-year-olds in 65 countries were analyzed, showing that in countries with greater inequality of family income or school inequalities, students learned less mathematics. This study offers evidence that family and school inequalities operate in part through fewer educational resources both inside and outside school. This volume also includes a study on cyberbullying, utilizing cross-sectional, longitudinal, cross-sequential, mixed-methods, qualitative, and quantitative research designs. Research is drawn from various disciplines, including psychology, sociology, media and communication studies, education, social work, and computer science, ending with recommendations for ending cyberbullying and a demand that it be considered a global concern. Later, a chapter in included on the health-illness nexus and people's beliefs about this. The authors carried out 49 interviews in a group of TB patients, or with their families in the case of deceased patients, trying to understand their beliefs about their lives and whether or not their behavior changed with the TB or diabetes diagnosis. Authors also provide an extensive systematic literature review of ISI Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, MEDLINE/PubMed, Google Scholar, DOAJ, EbscoHOST, Scirus, Science Direct, the Cochrane Library and ProQuestusing using the following key words: fasting, Ramadan, Islam, and immunity in order to ascertain the impact of Ramadan fasting on the immune system. The problem of antisocial behavior (ASB) is also investigated. Drawing from the findings of a structured questionnaire survey on owner-occupiers of private multi-owned housing developments in Hong Kong, the authors aim to analyze the relationship between environmental design of a housing community and residents ASB perceptions. The compilation ends with a chapter social constructionism, mainly discussing the aim of intervention and the empowerment of users. The authors maintain that "it is important to discover the reality inside each individual, a reality immanent to him, connected with his thoughts and perceptions."

The regime structure and its dominant relation can be studied through the standard and levels of decision characteristics, its making centers, and the basis of the official discourse as well as the mechanisms of investing the legitimacy conception. Studying the subjects of this book required the considering of the superimposition context which may be included in the causes of the crisis explosion; in view of the fact that it carries with itself a time particularity in the development of its internal corrosion (i.e., local consciousness), it justifies going into some historical and political issues. The time profundity provided by discussing some of these issues reveals some phenomena of the problem with the regimes considerate discourse with and within the historical and political contexts of the Syrian society and their relation with hegemony patterns. This book, therefore, depended on social and critical ideas of the Syrian society. The most important problem which had not been previously treated enough was discussed: it is that the decision-making monopoly in Syria was accompanied by a selective process of the cognitive product practiced by the Syrian regimes official discourse, a monopoly which led to profound defects with regard to controlling the future of Syria. "Dominant power" is meant to distinguish between two correlated contexts which define both dominion and hegemony concepts, since the regime in Syria is the outcome of these two concepts, with their differences and intersections as a whole. Hegemony, on the other hand, belongs to economic powers, traditional bourgeois and extraordinary bourgeois which originated from plundering the state wealth during the reign of Baath, and its connection with Gulf capital. These are the powers which took hold of and prevailed over fortunes and investment opportunities and carried out interest deals with the influential people in the governmental institutions and administrations. They are the powers which excreted the economic class really controlling the Syrian economy and can be idiomatically designated as the Controlling Economic Powers (CEP). Hegemony belongs to the political powers of the Baathist ideology, institutions, administrations, armed forces and different security bodies that give orders to the state through the government and parliament to implement the decisions, which determine the structure of the state institution in Syria. This, also idiomatically, can be designated as Powers of Political Decision (PPD). Between these two powers, there is a strong interest relation so that the first provides the second with financial and material revenues in exchange for legislative and facilities from the second to make the investment jobs easier. It must be noted that the (PPD) are in a way controlled by internal balances, the most important of which is the balance with the symbols of the Superstructure of the Syrian Society.

Data Storage: Systems, Management and Security Issues begins with a chapter comparing digital or electronic storage systems, such as magnetic, optical, and flash, with biological data storage systems, like DNA and human brain memory. In the main part of the chapter, the following quantitative storage traits are discussed: data organisation, functionality, data density, capacity, power consumption, redundancy, integrity, access time, data transfer rate. Afterwards, various facets of data warehouses as well as the necessity for security measures are reviewed. Because the significance of security tools is greater than ever before, the pertinent strategies and economics are discussed. The final chapter supplements this by discussing media and storage systems reliability and confidentiality in order to make a greater claim about storage security. Confidentiality, integrity and availability are three aspects of security identified as ones that should be preserved during data transmission, processing and storage.

In Chapter One, L. Khotseng and G. Vaivars provide an overview of the recent advances in electrocatalysts for direct methanol fuel cells for both anode and cathode catalysts in order to present direct methanol fuel cells as an alternative power source for portable devices. In Chapter Two, Nobuyoshi Nakagawa, Mohammad Ali Abdelkareem, Takuya Tsujiguchi, and Mohd Shahbudin Masdar propose a fuel supply layer using a porous carbon plate (PCP) for DMFCs allowing for the use of high methanol concentrations. The proposed layer is comprised of a thin PCP layer, as well as a gap layer that has a mechanism to supply the methanol as a vapor. Next, Chapter Three by D.S. Falcão, J. P. Pereira, and A.M.F.R. Pinto review the multiphase flow in fuel cells modelling approaches while also reviewing the flow visualisation techniques for flow analysis in fuel cells. Chapter Four by B.A. Braz, V.B. Oliveira, and A.M.F.R. Pinto closes the book by discussing the key work that has been done to improve the passive DMFC performance and providing a review on the most recent developments in passive DMFCs.

In Chapter One, D M Salazar, I López-Cortés, and D C Salazar-García give an overview of the composition of fatty acids, tocopherols, and polyphenols in oils from the main five olive areas. They conclude that it is advisable to consume extra virgin olive oils during the prenatal period, childhood, and in combating disease. In Chapter Two, Hédia Manai Djebali and Imen Oueslati examine the link between olive oil and human health, finding that the amounts of sterols depend on olive variety, ripening degree, oil extraction procedures, agronomic, and climatic conditions. In Chapter Three, Malika Drira, Ons Rekik, and Mohamed Bouaziz review the composition of olive oil, determining that it is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and also identifying 20 phenolic compounds from a plethora of phenolic types. María Dolores Alvarez, Wenceslao Canet, María José Jiméne, and Cristina Fernández present a study where samples of mashed potatoes enriched with extra virgin olive oil were perceived as softer in Chapter Four. In chapter five, Imen Oueslati and Hédia Manai explore the characteristics of the volatile compounds, as well as the enzymes involved, in different Mediterranean olive oil categories. J M Ochando-Pulido and A Martinez-Ferez review the present-day treatment processes of olive mill wastewater and olive mill solid waste.

Chapter One addresses six psychic characteristics in order to gain insights about the psychology of collaborative negotiators: 1) making contact with oneself, 2) connecting to others, 3) reality perspective, 4) understanding and expressing emotions, 5) balanced narcissism, and 6) change process. Chapter Two summarises what is currently known through empirical evidence about job offer and compensation negotiations, and presents a research strategy to guide empirical investigations of compensation and job offer negotiations. In Chapter Three, the authors focus on the negotiation over continuous issues and investigate the jointly Improving Direction Method (IDM). This method is well known both for its generality, since many other negotiation protocols can be considered as a particular subclass of it, and for its theoretical Pareto efficiency. In addition, it is easy to implement, and this makes IDM a very good candidate for an automated negotiation support system.
